<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

HITER OF CHIMNEY
The invention relates to devices intended to improve the draft of chimneys, ventilation ducts or the like and has as a particular object the production of an improved chimney bolster, of simple and economical construction, specially established with a view to obtaining a perfect draft, without backflow, in the chimneys of low height, exposed to the variable eddies of the winds which blow in the urban agglomerations, and which generally come from the position of high walls which rise in the vicinity of these chimneys.
According to the invention, the chimney bolster, made of sheet metal, asbestos cement or similar material,
comprises a hollow cylinder inside which the chimney pipe opens and which surrounds the latter at a certain distance, while deflectors, respectively cooperating with the outlet orifice of said chimney pipe and of said hollow cylinder, are provided to prevent the penetration of wind and backflow in the chimney and also to promote the draft of the chimney under the effect of the blast of the vento
An embodiment of the invention will be described below, by way of example, with reference to the single figure of the attached drawing, which shows, in an elevational view, partially in section, the bolster. fireplace established according to the said invention
As shown in the drawing, the bolster, made of sheet metal, asbestos-cement or similar material,
comprises a hollow cylinder 1 into which the chimney pipe 2 opens out concentrically and approximately halfway up the latter, forming around this pipe an annular passage 3. The cylinder 1 is joined to the pipe 2, at the 'using vertical spacers 40
Opposite and at a certain distance from the outlet orifice 5 of the pipe 2, there is provided a deflector 6, taking the shape of an inverted cone of diameter substantially equal to that of the pipe 2 and arranged coaxially with the latter. This deflector 6 is supported by the pipe 2 by means of tabs 7 fixed by welding, screwing, riveting or the like.

Above the upper edge 8 of the cylinder 1 and at a certain distance from it, is arranged a second deflector 9, in the form of an inverted cone of diameter substantially equal to that of the cylinder 1 and supported by the latter by means of lugs 10.
The assembly is surmounted, at a certain distance from the deflector 9, by a conical protective cap 11, fixed to the cylinder 1 by means of lugs 12, which cap is intended to prevent the direct fall of rain or water. snow in the chimney 2 or in the hollow formed in the upper face of the conical plates constituting the deflectors 6 and 9. An opening 13 is made in the top of these deflectors in order to allow the flow of water from rain that could possibly be drawn into the hollow of said trays
It is easy to realize that, by the arrangement of the elements constituting the bolster according to the invention, under the action of the normal blast of the wind, the suction in the chimney 2 will be favored by the flow of the air under the bonnet 11 and under the deflector 9.
This suction will be further increased by an ascending air current which will be established in the annular space 3 formed between the adjacent faces of the pipe 2 and of the cylinder 1. On the other hand, the descending eddies of air which could act on the chimney, will not be able to penetrate inside the pipe 2, due to the presence of the deflector 9 and particularly of the deflector 6 which will prevent any backflow into the chimney.
In addition, the air with downward movement entrained in the space 3 formed around the pipe 2 escapes through the lower opening of the cylinder 1 and the movement of this air creates around the end 5 of the pipe 2, a suction favoring the draft of the chimney, despite the unfavorable movement of the wind.
It is understood that the invention is not limited to the meter as described and shown in the drawing, but that constructive modifications can be made to it without departing from the spirit thereof.
