<EMI ID=2.1>

<EMI ID=6.1>
<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>
<EMI ID=10.1>
<EMI ID=11.1>
<EMI ID=12.1>

GEAR CHANGE TRANSMISSION.
The object of the invention is a gearshift transmission.
<EMI ID = 1.1>
planetary wheels, the essential characteristic of which is that the sun wheel, the planetary carrier, the planetary wheels and the internally toothed outer ring of the planetary wheel transmission are associated by construction in a block or unit movable axially on a fixed shaft, the planetary wheel, the outer ring and possibly also the sun wheel, respectively a transmission member connected to the latter, being provided with coupling members, preferably coupling claws which, by axial displacement of the aforesaid unit or block, engage as desired with corresponding cooperating members, respectively with counter-claws, on the driving part and on the driven part o The coupling members,
respectively their cooperating members are then arranged in such a way that in the middle position the driving part is coupled directly to the driven part via the outer ring, while the force transmission takes place in one of the extreme positions, from the driving part to the driven part passing through the outer ring gear, the planetary wheels and the planetary carrier, (transmission with speed reduction), and in the other extreme position, from the driving part to the driven part by passing by the planetary wheel, the planetary wheels and the outer ring gear (transmission with speed increase).
According to another feature of the invention, the transmission can be additionally equipped with a reverse gear and this advantageously
in that on the shaft there are provided coupling members which couple
the sun wheel (i.e. block it) with the shaft during the three aforementioned forward gears, while on the contrary, in the axial displacement position corresponding to the reverse gear, of the transmission block!) they release it and at the same time, in this' position, couple (block) the planetary carrier with the axis, and. then the rotational movement communicated to the sun wheel by the driving part passing through the outer ring and the planetary wheels rotating in place, through
<EMI ID = 2.1>
part led in the direction of a retrograde step thereof.
Other particularities of the invention relate to particularly advantageous constructive conformations of the transmission, respectively of determining constructive parts thereof and then, above all, in relation to the fundamental construction of the transmission, described above, not only is the operation, respectively impeccable handling thereof, but also the advantage of an extremely compact construction, which makes the transmission according to the invention particularly suitable for use in bicycles and in particular to be incorporated into the hub of the wheels.
An essential advantage is still this circumstance, that all the gaits of walking (also retrograde) are obtained by means of a single planetary system, which in the simplest case, can include only three toothed wheels, since of this not only simplifies and makes inexpensive the internal construction of the transmission, but also decreases the tendency to failures.
The drawing shows examples of embodiments of the object of the invention, and in fact: <EMI ID = 3.1> tick, transmission,
- Figure 2 is a section perpendicular to the axis of the transmission along line II-II of Figure 1,
- Figures 3 to 5 give the three positions, corresponding to the three walking modes or gaits, of the coupling members, on an enlarged scale,
- Figure 6 shows the incorporation of this transmission in the rear hub of a bicycle, as a preferred application example,
- Figure 7 shows the axial longitudinal section in a modified embodiment of the transmission, and
- Figure 8 shows a section perpendicular to the axis of the transmission along the line VIII-VIII of Figure 7, and
- Figures 9 to 11 show different engagement positions of this transmission.
According to Figures 1 and 2, the transmission comprises the driving part 1 and the driven part 2, both of which are rotatably mounted on the fixed axis 3 of the transmission. The two parts are shaped into cups and arranged in such a way that the cups are directed with their open edges toward each other. In the hollow space thus formed is housed
the planetary transmission proper. This has the planetary wheel carrier 6 formed by the two flanges 4,5 and the planetary wheels 8 rotatably mounted on the bolts 7, between the cheeks, the planetary wheels meshing on the one hand with the sun wheel 9 which is on the inside and on the other hand with the outer toothed ring, toothed internally (outer ring) 10. The planetary carrier 6 respectively its flanges 4,5 can rotate freely on the hub of the sun wheel 9, while the wheel solai-

solar and thereby to the block or unit of transmission proper formed by the planetary transmission.
Both the cheeks 4, 5 and the outer ring 10 are each provided at their outer edge with a ring of coupling claws 12, 13, respectively 14, which, depending on the movement of the aforementioned transmission unit, can cooperate with the counter-claws 15, respectively
16, protruding inward, which are arranged on the driving part and the driven part, respectively 1 and 2. Between the edges of the parts in <EMI ID = 5.1>
The operation of this transmission is as follows s
The position, shown in Figures 1 and 2, of the parts of the transmission corresponds to the so-called average position. In it, by the claws 14 of the outer ring 10, which cooperate with the claws 15 and 16, the driving part and the driven part, respectively 1 and 2, are coupled directly (normal speed).
If the transmission block is moved by means of the movable key 11, in the direction of arrow p 1 to the left (figure 1) in the position according to figure 4, the claws 15. of the driving part 1 come engaged with the claws 12 of the planetary carrier, respectively of the cheek 4 of the latter, while the claws 16 of the driven part 2 remain in engagement with the claws 14 of the outer ring 10. The transmission of
<EMI ID = 6.1>
from the outer ring gear 10 moved by their rolling on the sun wheel, to the driven part 2 (transmission with increased speed).
If, on the other hand, the transmission unit is moved to the right, in the direction of arrow p2 (figure 1) in the position according to figure 5, the claws 16 of the driven part 2 engage with the claws 13 of the planetary carrier 6 respectively of its cheek 5, while the claws 15 of the driving part 1 mesh with the claws.14 of the outer ring 10. In this position there is therefore transmission of force from the driving part 1, by the outer ring gear 10, the planetary wheels 8, <EMI ID = 7.1>
led 2 (transmission with speed reduction).
It is clearly seen in FIG. 1 in particular, the compact construction of the entire transmission, obtained by the construction method according to the invention. As already said at the outset, the transmission is therefore especially suitable for being incorporated into the hubs of bicycles or the like. Figure 6 shows for example such a case of incorporation. The parts of the transmission themselves are, in this figure, provided with the same reference signs as in Figures 1 and 2. The driving part 1 of the transmission is in relation by a coupling 17 with the driving part proper. 19 put into rotational movement in the usual manner by a chain sprocket or the like 18.
The driven part 2 can transmit its rotational movement by a freewheel 20 in a manner known per se, to the hub body 21, which is supported so as to allow its free rotation relative to the fixed shaft 3. The transmission and the wheel free 20 are then placed correspondingly in recesses 21a respectively
<EMI ID = 8.1>
of the movable key 11 is made against the action of the spring 22 from the outside, by a chain, linkages or the like 23. The operation of the transmission is the same as in the example of form embodiment according to Figures 1 and 2.
Figures 7 and. 8 show a modified embodiment of the transmission, according to which, in addition to the three forward gears, a reverse gear is also provided, as is shown in par-
<EMI ID = 9.1>
means which, in a determined displacement position of the transmission block, block the planetary carrier 6 on the fixed shaft 3, the sun gear 9 of the planetary transmission being released at the same time, so that it can rotate freely on the shaft 3. These means are formed, in the exemplary embodiment shown, by two groups of springs 25, respectively 26, mounted on the shaft 3 ', one of the groups (25) of which cooperates with the sun wheel 9, the other group (26}, cooperating with the planetary carrier 6, respectively with its cheek 4. The springs 25 are then dimensioned in length in such a way that during the three forward speeds, they remain meshing with the sun wheel 9, respectively with the transmission member 27 connected to the latter.
It is only when the transmission block has been put in its extreme right position, according to figure 11, that the
<EMI ID = 10.1>
in the direction of blocking the planetary carrier 6. The transmission member
27, for example in the form of a plate, serves to transmit the rotational movement of the sun wheel to the driven part 2 in the reverse gear, for which the purpose of the transmission member 27 is permanently connected to the sun wheel and carries to its outer edge of the coupling claws 28, which, in the extreme right position of the transmission block (figure 11) engage with the counter claws 16 of the driven part 2.
To move the transmission block, a traction rod 30 is provided here, guided to slide in a groove of the shaft 3, operable from the outside, which, through its nose 31, enters a recess (obtained by turning) 32 between cheek 4 of the planetary carrier and sun wheel 9.
The other parts of the transmission are, insofar as they correspond to the parts of the transmission according to Figures 1 and 2, provided with the same reference signs as in these figures.
The operating mode of the transmission according to Figures 7 and 8 is as follows:
In the middle position of the transmission shown in Figure 7, in correspondence with Figures 1 and 3, the planetary carrier 6 rotates freely, on the other hand the sun gear 9 is blocked by the springs
25 on the fixed shaft 3. There is therefore here also, corresponding to the above-mentioned figures, a direct coupling of the driving part 1 with the driven part 2, by means of the claws 14, 15, 16.
The position of the transmission according to figure 9 corresponding to that according to figure 4. Here also, the driving part 1 is coupled, by means of the claws 15 and 12, with the planetary carrier 6 free-rotating, the sun wheel 9 is blocked by the springs 25 on the fixed shaft 3 and the outer ring 10 of the planetary transmission, as a result of the interpenetration of the claws 14, 16, is in positive connection with the driven part
2 (transmission with increased speed).
The position of the transmission according to figure 10 corresponds to that according to figure 5, since here also the planetary carrier 6 remains free to rotate and the sun gear 9 is blocked by the springs 25 on the fixed shaft 3. In this position, we have a transmission with reduced speed.
The transmission member 27 is released in the three aforementioned positions (Figures 7, 9 and 10).
To produce the reverse gear of the driven part, it is necessary to bring the transmission block to the position shown in figure 10 in
<EMI ID = 11.1>
10). In this movement, as we have already said., The springs 25 are released from the sun wheel 9, while the springs 26 enter the cheek 4 of the planetary carrier and block the latter on the shaft 3. In In addition, then, the claws 28 of the transmission member 27 engage with the claws 16 of the driven part 2. The claws 15 of the driving part 1 mesh with the claws 14 of the outer ring 10. In this position the
-Rotational movement of the driving part 1 is transferred by the claws
14, 15 on the outer ring 10 and thereof, by the planetary wheels 8 rotating in place, to the sun wheel 9 and further to the transmission member 27, and by the claws 16, 28 to the part led 2, and then at the same time a reversal of the direction of rotation occurs.
For the impeccable engagement of the transmission, it is advantageous to provide empty runs between the various transmission stages. This can be achieved, as can easily be seen from the
<EMI ID = 12.1>
28 of the transmission member 27, or by making them narrow by recesses around 33 so that next to the claws, there remain free annular spaces, the width of which is somewhat greater than the width of the claws 15 , 16.
