FRICTION WHEEL TRANSMISSION.
In friction wheel transmissions, it is known to derive from the load itself the application force of the friction wheels. It has already been proposed to introduce into the control for this purpose a coupling, one half of which is journaled on an oblique surface of the other coupling half and at the same time exerts an axial pressure, the magnitude of which depends on the position of one of the coupling parts. mating halves on the oblique surface of the other mating half.
The bearing surfaces of such a coupling are subjected to so high pressures that when transmitting high powers, 9 in particular in the case of intermittent loads, it can happen that the material is stressed beyond the elastic limit o
It has further been proposed to cause inapplication by the pressure of the teeth of the receiver, for example by the pressure on the teeth of a planetary wheel connected to the receiver friction cone, and which can rotate around the main wheel of the receiver. many transmissions of this species :; the arrangement of the special slides to be provided for the planetary wheel is particularly difficult. In addition, such a friction wheel transmission can only be used in both directions by adopting relatively large dimensions.
The object of the invention is to overcome this difficulty and provides as a solution a very simple wheel drive transmission 9 capable of transmitting high powers while avoiding excessive forces.
The essential feature of the invention consists in the fact that the receiving friction cone is coupled with the receiving shaft by means of a threaded rod such that the receiving wheel moves axially during braking of the receiving shaft. According to a preferred embodiment, the receiving friction cone is connected by a thread with the driving friction cone of a second friction wheel transmission.
It is thus possible to obtain an extremely simple construction of the whole transmission and at the same time achieve a very large reaction range.

glageo We can also have co = a: rlalement the motor shaft and 1-'arbre-r 'receiver of the transmission if by the threaded axis we connect on the one hand a friction crown and on the other a friction cone.
When transmissions with friction wheels arranged in this way one behind the other are employed, the two friction wheels connected together by a threaded axle have parts, the threads of which are in opposite direction. and mesh with a common member, axially movable, arranged opposite and provided with corresponding threads. The movement of this element is preferably damped by springs. The two friction wheels connected by the thread are permanently held apart by a weaker spring
EMI2.2
The invention will be described below in an exemplary embodiment.
The attached drawing shows a longitudinal section through the friction wheel transmission according to the invention.
The exemplary embodiment shown shows a double friction wheel transmission in which the motor shaft 1 and the receiver shaft 2 are co-axial. With the motor shaft 1 is secured a friction cone 3, which acts on a friction ring 4.
With the receiver shaft 2 is
EMI2.3
connected a friction ring 5, on which acts a friction ring 6a The friction ring 4 is provided with an axial shoulder 7, partially executed in the form of a nut 8 of a threaded rod with pitch right The friction cone 6 is likewise provided with a shoulder 10 which acts as a nut 11 for a threaded rod 12 with left pitch. The two threaded axes and 12 are integrally connected to each other by a link 13. Pre-
EMI2.4
ference the bodies 12 and 1.1 are constituted in one and the same place. The axes 9 etc'12 are several steps and have a helix angle between 35 and 50. The whole of the threaded shaft 12 13 is hollow.
In its interior there is a coil spring 14 thanks to which Friction panel 4. and the friction cone 6 are pressed with a force of some.

These shock-absorbing springs consist of several rings re-

folded conically9 stacked 1-'on top of 1-' other. This arrangement has more to require only a small space, while being able to absorb great pressures,
The shoulders 2 and 10 are journaled by means of roller bearings 16 in an eccentric recess 17 of a cylindrical drum 18,
EMI2.9
rotatable about an axis 4.Q The rotation of the drum 18 about 11 axis AA occurs for example by means of a hand wheel acting on a worm. The drum 18 is arranged in the housing which carries the bearings of the shafts 1 and 20
The operating mode of the device is as follows.
If the motor shaft 1 rotates the friction cone 3, the latter drives the friction ring k which causes an under-multiplication whose ratio
EMI2.10
port corresponds to that of the size of the friction panel L with respect to the diameter of the friction wheel 3, according to which the friction ring 4 acts. This diameter is adjustable by tilting the drum 18 around the axis AA. The drawing shows a position in which the money ring
EMI2.11
tion to work with the largest diameter of the aged friet-lon wheel so that the sub-multiplication is the smallest achievable.
If the drum 18 is rotated around the axis Aà, the bearing surface of 19a = friction water à moves towards the tip of the cone, so that the sub-multiplication is increased .-, A similar displacement of friction ring
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
4 requires that Friction panel 4, can move simultaneously axially
EMI3.1
1mente in the opposite direction of the arrow Po <A similar movement of the friction ring l is possible without more During this movement, the spring 1! which has only a small force, is simply compressed and the threaded axle rotates at the same time
As a result of the rotation of the drum 18, the point of application of the cone 6 on the fixed friction disc 5,
also moves and at the same
EMI3.2
time the useful diameter of the cone 2 is reduced. The cone 6 must therefore move against the arrow Q. During this movement, the threaded shaft 12 turns. The threaded pins 9 and 12 correspond to each other in such a way that the movements of the friction ring 4 permanently correspond in the manner described to those of the friction cone 6.
EMI3.3
As a result of a rotation of the drum 18L 19axe 9 -., M ,, 13 therefore moves in a determined direction between the shoulders 1 and 10. This direction is reversed when the direction of rotation of the movement of the shaft 1 is reversed.

EMI3.5

The pressure of the pairs of friction discs will go and 5, - in the direction of arrows P and Qs, respectively, is exerted as follows: When the motor shaft 1 starts up, the receiver shaft 2 being loaded must first be considered as stationary the cone ± tends to drive the friction ring 1.9 due to the reason that the friction ring 4 is pressed against
EMI3.6
be the cone 1 by the spring 9.1.o Consequently, with the intervention of the nut 8 of the axis 2,, 1) the friction ring 1 t turns to the right until the moment when the springs shock absorbers 15s the link 3, press firmly on the nut 11 of the shoulder 10o As soon as this has taken place, in the event that 1-, the receiver shaft 2 does not have any loads, the chine 6 will be driven by the nut 11 and shoulder 10,
while the friction ring 5, as well as the receiver shaft 2 would be driven by the cone 6. But like the receiver shaft 2, the cone .2 is loaded, being consequently retained under the pressure of the spring.
EMI3.7
by the friction ring 2, s 1? nut 8 of the axis jfl is screwed in the direction of the arrow Po Thus the pressure between the parts 1 and is increased and
EMI3.8
this increase occurs until the resistance of tree 2 is overcome.
A particular advantage of the device is that the elements can be constructed in a very simple and robust way which! They can be completely enclosed in a casing and that during service, at least
EMI3.9
during the triggering and reversing, it undergoes regular and small amplitude movements, so that regular lubrication can be easily ensured. A further advantage is that this device allows large transmission ratios, since that the gear ratios of the two pairs of friction wheels multiply one by one

on a part serving as a nut and housed inside the hollow shaft. Instead of similar pins or shoulders, to reduce friction, balls can also be used.
Taking into account similar means, the arrangement shown can for example be modified so that the nuts 8 and 11 can instead of a thread ±) bead one or more rings of balls, each of these rings comprising as many balls that axes 9 .. respect

llg it is also possible to replace the pins 9, and 12 by similar rings of balls which mesh with the corresponding threads of the nuts 8 and 11.
In such cases the nuts serve as threaded pins in the sense of the designations used here. 0 When using balls the threads will preferably receive a semi-circular bottom profile whose diameter corresponds to that of the balls.
EMI4.2
The invention is obviously not limited to these examples. It can also be applied to pairs of isolated friction wheels and can for example in pairs of friction wheels also be used in such a way that the two friction wheels 4 and 6 are provided with cylindrical shoulders, between which is housed. a spring producing the initial pressure these cylindrical shoulders being provided with external threads which act on a common nut which can move freely
