La présente invention est relative également à une machine pour la mise en pratique du procédé suivant le brevet principal précédemment cité et suivant le présent perfectionnement. Ladite machine est substantielle- ment constituée d'un ensemble comprenant un système d'avancement pour le fil,deux paires de matrices fileteuses agissant à angle droit par rapport au sens de la longueur du fil, chaque paire étant orientée à angle droit par rapport à l'autre paire; une telle machine comprend, en outre, des moyens qui provoquent la succession des opérations des deux paires de ma- trices, et des matrices tailleuses qui séparent la vis finie, du fil, pen- dant l'action d'une des paires de matrice fileteuses;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
L'invention est illustrée par les dessins joints, dans lesquels la figure 1 est une vue latérale d'une portion de fil dont la sec- tion est modifiée localement,suite à la première phase du procédé; la figure 2 représente, en coupe, l'action de la première paire de matrices utilisée pour transformer la section de la partie préalablement déformée et pour amorcer le filet; la figure 3 est une vue de la même particularité que celle de la figure 2 mais tournée de .90 et complétée par les matrices tailleuses; la figure 4 représente, en coupe, la seconde paire de matrices fi- leteuses, les matrices complémentaires de déformation préalable et la ma- trice axiale pour la formation de la tête; la figure 5 représente, en coupe transversalé plane, la machine pour la production de telles vis à bois;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

PROCESS FOR MANUFACTURING WOOD SCREWS.
The present invention relates to an improvement to the process forming the subject of Belgian patent for invention No. 473,370 filed on May 20, 1947, and to a machine for the manufacture of wood screws according to the improved process.
According to one of the characteristics of the present invention, the first stamping operation is eliminated, either by the use of drawn wires of elliptical or elongated section in any way, or by acting on the drawn lines, by means of of rollers, so as to obtain the required cross section.
The invention also relates to a method for producing wood screws from drawn or metal wire, thanks to a series of successive operations which include the execution of the head and which bring about the production of the threaded part. , by means of a series of stamping operations executed by two pairs of dies which move transversely to the wire, each screw being finally cut successively from the wire so as to allow the stamping of the others. wire which advances between the dies moving transversely.
The present invention also relates to a machine for carrying out the process according to the main patent cited above and according to the present improvement. Said machine consists substantially of an assembly comprising a system for advancing the thread, two pairs of thread dies acting at right angles to the direction of the length of the thread, each pair being oriented at right angles to the thread. the other pair; such a machine further comprises means which cause the succession of the operations of the two pairs of dies, and cutting dies which separate the finished screw from the wire, during the action of one of the pairs of dies. threading machines;
said machine finally comprises a die acting axially on the end of the wire, so as to form, by percussion, the head of the screw, the latter die
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
acting simultaneously with the closing movement of the second pair of threading dies.
Another characteristic of the present invention resides in the presence of a pair of complementary dies which close on the opposite sides of the wire, simultaneously with the active movement of the first threading pair, at a certain distance from said first pair, said dies being provided for modifying, in advance, the cross section of the wire at a place where the other dies must act afterwards, means being finally provided for the intermittent advancement of said wire at intervals adjustable in time and length to match the succession of stamping operations.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which FIG. 1 is a side view of a portion of yarn the cross section of which is locally modified, following the first phase of the process; FIG. 2 represents, in section, the action of the first pair of dies used to transform the section of the part previously deformed and to initiate the thread; FIG. 3 is a view with the same feature as that of FIG. 2 but turned by .90 and completed by the cutting dies; FIG. 4 shows, in section, the second pair of threading dies, the complementary pre-deformation dies and the axial matrix for forming the head; Fig. 5 shows, in plane cross section, the machine for the production of such wood screws;
Figure 6 shows the same machine, in cross section taken along line 24-24 of Figure 5; FIG. 7 shows, on an enlarged scale, a longitudinal-vertical section of the same machine, taken along the plane 25-25 of FIG. 5.
Referring to Figures 1 to 4, the wire or the metal drawn by 10 is subjected simultaneously, in two places distant from each other, to the action of a pair of dies 11, 11 which crush the wire and modify the section, as indicated by 12, and to the action of a pair of dies 13,13 operating on the opposite sides of such a portion 12 previously subjected to the action of the first pair of threading dies 14, 14 which have partly formed the thread, by acting on the side of the part flattened by the dies 11, 11.
Said pair of dies 13, 13, which are in fact the second threading dies, act in turn on the side of the part flattened by the first threading dies 14, 14; consequently, these latter dies act at right angles to the direction of the action of dies 11, 11, while dies 13,13 act at right angles to the direction of movement of the dies. - these 14, 14, but in the same plane as that in which the dies 11, 11 move.
At the same time that the first pair of threading dies, 14, 14 acts, the screw 17, produced by the previous cycle of movements of the dies, is separated from the wire being stamped, such separation being carried out by means of knives 16. 16 which move transversely to the wire.
Once such a separation is carried out, the knives 16, 16 move away from the said wire and the short piece of wire, emerging from the forged 13,13 which will be closed, subsequently, on the part 15 of the wire semi-worked by the dies 14, by imposing on the piece of wire its final shape and finishing its thread, is crushed by the die 9 acting axially and which, by compressing said emerging portion in the frustoconical cavity 19 formed by the dies 13, executes the head 18 of the screw, thus constituting a finished part 17, which., after displacement, is cut from the next semi-worked portion -, - thanks to the action of the knife dies 16, 16.
At the end of the successive stamping operations described below
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In addition, the wire is advanced by a space corresponding to the interval comprised between a deformed part 12 and a similar part 12, but in the previous position, where it is worked inside the dies 13 and 14. The Figures 3 and 4 show the succession of the semi-worked and completely worked parts of the wire which is advanced intermittently.
The machine which can produce the aforementioned stamping operations, thanks to the movement of the wire, knives and dies, the active parts of which have been described with reference to figures 1 to 4, is shown in figures 5 to 7.
Such a machine comprises a frame 20 which has two horizontal appendages 21 and 22 and a vertical appendage 23. The frame 20 is provided with two pairs of coaxial bearings 24, 24 and 25,25 which support a rotary shaft 26; at one end of this shaft is mounted a pulley 27 intended to receive, by means of a belt, the movement of any motor, for the operation of the machine.
The shaft 26 is also provided with two pairs of symmetrical axial cams 28, 28 and 29, 29 and its end, opposite to that carrying the pulley 27, is provided with a crank 30 with an eccentric button. 31. On the same shaft 26 are, in addition, other radial cams 32 and 33.
On the vertical part 23 of the frame are mounted two transverse carriages 34, 34 which carry the complementary dies 11, 11 for the prior local deformation of the yarn 10, as well as the second spinning dies 13, 13 for the yarn. 'final stamping. Said carriages 34, 34 and the matrixes attached thereto move transversely with respect to the wire 10. Said carriages, as can be seen in FIG. 7, have a dovetail section and slide at the end. interior of corresponding cavities provided in the vertical part 230
Said carriages 34, 34 are moved, with simultaneous and symmetrical movements, thanks to the levers 35 pivotally mounted on the vertical axes 36, 36, and receive their movement from the axial cams 28, 28.
Each lever 35 is provided with an adjustment screw 37 which presses on the end of the corresponding carriage 34 and, moreover, each lever is connected to its corresponding carriage, thanks to a part 39 hooking onto a protrusion 40 of said carriage. 34, said part 39 being fixed to its lever 35 by a bolt 38, so that, when said levers 35 perform an oscillating movement about their axes 36, the carriages 34 are obliged to perform reciprocating movements of advance and retreat against the wire, the advance movement being effected by the thrust exerted by the adjusting screws 37 while the recoil is obtained by the traction exerted by the parts 39.
The dies 11, 11 and 13, 13 are fixed to the carriages 34, 34 by means which allow easy separation and substitution, when the active parts of said dies show signs of wear or when it is desired to produce screws of different sizes. dimensions or shapes.
At the upper part of the upright 23 of the frame are provided two opposite and symmetrical oscillating levers 42, 42, supported by pins 41, 41. The lower end of said levers supports the cutting knives 16, 16 and said levers 42. , 42 are controlled by other oscillating levers 44, 44 pivotally mounted on axes 45, 45 and receiving their movement from the axial cams 29, 29.
The transmission of movement between the oscillating levers 44, 44 and the pendulum levers 42, 42 is obtained, again, by adjusting screws 46,46, which transmit the thrust necessary for the advance and cut movement. knives 16,16, while the return movement is obtained thanks to the connection made by the hooks 47, 47, which grip the pendulum levers 42, 42 by their lower external projections 48, 48.
The knives 16,16 are mounted at the lower end of their respective levers 42 by means of means which allow rapid removal.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The threading dies 14, 14 receive a forward and backward movement in the vertical plane and are mounted at the end of the bars 52, 52, which can slide in the sleeves 53, 53, provided with lateral journals 54, 54 which are blocked in the vertical parts 23 of the frame, by means of bolts 55, 55. The aforementioned dies 14, 14 are moved in the vertical plane thanks to the use of levers 56 and 57.
The lever 56, which actuates the lower die 14, is mounted to pivot at one of its ends, on the axis 58 carried by the arm 59 which extends below the frame 20; the same lever is provided with a screw 60 whose end, initially thinned, then presents a head enlargement 62 which is inserted into a corresponding cavity provided inside the part 63 connected to the lower end of the rod 52 which supports the aforesaid lower die 14. The lever 57, which actuates the upper die 14, is also provided with a screw 64, corresponding to the screw 60 of the lower lever.
Said lever 57 is pivotally mounted, at one of its midpoints, on an axis 65, carried by an upper lateral extension. of part 23 of the frame. The free ends of the two levers 56, 57 are joined together by a connecting rod 66 having a median cavity 67 which embraces a substantially horizontal lever 68, at a median point of the latter. This if, as can be seen in FIG. 5, is mounted at one of its ends on a journal provided at the end of the horizontal appendage 22 of the frame 20 while, at its other end, it embraces the radial cam 32 supported by the shaft 26.
- The oscillation movement imposed on the lever 68 by the cam 32 (movement which is in synchronism with all the other movements of the levers and the dies previously described, since they all depend on axial or radial cams supported by the same shaft 26) causes a reciprocating movement of raising and lowering of the connecting rod 66.
The lifting movement of this connecting rod causes the lifting movement of the lower die 14, given that this die is connected to the lever 56 at a point situated between the pivot 58 of said lever and its end joined to the connecting rod 66, while the The upper die 14 is simultaneously lowered since its movement is received from the lever 57 which is pivotally mounted at 65, at a point situated between the point of connection of said lever to the die and the point of connection of the same lever to the connecting rod. The lowering movement of the connecting rod 66 causes, conversely, the separation of the two dies of the wire. The synchronous and opposite movement of the two matrices is well understood by examining figure 6.
The axial die 9, used to produce the head of the screw, is mounted at the end of a bar 69 provided with reciprocating forward and backward movements. Said bar 69 slides inside the pads 70 and 71, the pad 70 being directly mounted on the frame 20 while the pad 71 is supported by a pair of arms 72 integral with said frame or supported in any way, by this one. One of the ends, for example the rear end of said bar 68, has, in section, a non-circular section and the pad 71 is shaped correspondingly in order to prevent the rotation of said bar.
The latter is finally pushed by a spring 73 towards the end of the wire, said spring being compressed between an ap-. pui 74, mounted at the rear end of the bar 69, and a second support (not shown), fixed to the frame 20. The bar 69 is provided with an appendage or nose 75 which engages on the cam 33 carried by tree 26.
This cam 33 acts in such a way as to cause the bar 69 to retract, and from there to move away, from the end of the wire 10, the axial die 9, opposing the pressure exerted by the spring 73, The position of the cam 33 on the shaft 26 is adjusted, relative to the position of the other cams, so that at the opportune moment, following the process previously described, said cam 33 loses contact with the aforementioned nose 75 so as to allow the bar 79, pushed by the spring 73, to relax forward, and thus to obtain a violent blow of the die 9 on the end of the wire, in order to obtain the formation of the head 18 of the screw.
However, after the knife dies 16 have finished cutting the already finished screw, from the previous semi-worked portion of the wire 10, sometimes it can happen that the finished screw remains connected, by a small burr,

wire; to avoid such a drawback, the machine comprises a device which ensures the separation of the screw. Said device is formed by the end of a bar 76 which can strike the finished screw transversely with sufficient force to effect the complete separation of the wire, breaking any burr which still retains the screw. screw to this wire Said bar 76 is fixed, by a jaw 77, to an oscillating lever 78, an arm 79 of which is actuated by a nose 80 supported by the shaft 26.
Said lever 78 is subjected to the elastic action of spring 81, one anchoring end 82 of which is fixed to a post 83 connected to frame 20, the tension of said spring 81 being adjustable by means of a soft knob. 84 which can be more or less screwed onto said end 820 The arm 79 of the oscillating lever 78 is provided with a bolt 85 which constitutes an adjustable stop means of the movement of said lever towards the frame 20. Such a stop defines the amplitude movements of the bar 76 outside the axis of the wire 10.
After each completed screw has been cut and separated from the next portion of semi-worked wire, and while all of the dies are in the open position, i.e. away from the wire, said wire is advanced, by an amount corresponding to the length of a portion of said wire intended to form a screw9 by an intermittent feed mechanism. Said mechanism consists of a part 86 sliding in a slide assembly 87 carried by the frame 20, said sliding part being guided in said slide so that its movements are carried out strictly in the axis of the wire 10.
The sliding part 86 has, in its upper part, a cavity 88 which covers part of the wire 10 passing through this part 860 Inside said cavity 88, there is mounted a small oscillating element 90 carrying a blade. 91, which, as can be seen in FIG. 7, bears, by its pointed end, on the metal wire 10, in a position opposite to that of a support 92.
The parts 86 and 90 are actuated, as can be seen particularly well in FIG. 5, by a lever 93 pivotally mounted, at a midpoint, on an axis 94, carried by the horizontal appendage 21 of the frame 20 , said lever 93 being biased by a spring 95 and moved alternately, in one direction and the other, by a connecting rod 96, the end of which is assembled to the eccentric button 31 of the crank 30.
The lever 93 engages in a cavity 97 of the oscillating part 90 and the blade 91 is inclined in a plane transverse to the wire 10, so that when the sliding part 86 and the blade 91 move towards the dies, (see Figure 7), the wire is driven in a corresponding manner ,, receiving the necessary movement of intermittent advance;, in order to obtain that all the portions of the wire are presented successively to the inaction of the dies.
The return movement of the part 86, effected by driving the parts of the oscillating part 90, which tilts so as to cause the blade 91 to rise from the wire, allows the same wire to remain in the position reached.
In the embodiment shown, the machine is intended for working with drawn metal wire or iron, originally of circular section. It is also possible to use., For the production of wood screws according to the process in question, wire or drawn wire of elliptical section or of flattened section. -In any way, the dies 11, 11 being in this case deleted,
since it is no longer necessary to provide a local preventive deformation of the wire intended to undergo the action of the two pairs of threading dies 13, 13, and 14, 14.
The invention also provides that it is possible to use ':!:', In a machine substantially summed up as described above, wire of originally round section, which., Before being subjected to Inaction threading dies 13 and 14, can be passed between pressure rollers which deform the wire so as to impose on it the necessary flattened section, the elimination of the complementary dies 11 thus being, in this case, obtained.
