La présente invention a.pour objet un appareil destiné à appor- ter une solution simple de ce problème. Il est basé sur la constatation que. au cours de la fermentation anaérobie, les bulles de gaz qui se forment res- tent un certain temps au moins adhérentes aux brins de végétaux et tendent à les entraîner de bas en haut dans le liquide. 'En conséquence mettant à pro- fit cette constatation, l'invention consiste à introduire'par le bas dans la ou les cuves de fermentation,, la suspension de végétaux dans le purin, les végétaux montant naturellement en raison de la force ascensionnelle due à la formation des bulles ;

Le conduit d'évacuation peut être muni d'une vis d'extraction;
D'autres caractéristiques de l'invention apparaîtront à l'occasion de la description de certaines variantes de réalisation de l'invention, don- nées à titre d'exemples et représentées aux. dessins annexés dans lesquels;

Les gaz produits par la fermentation dans la cuve 3 sont recueillis par une canalisation 19 et ceux qui peuvent se trouver dans le carter 14 sont évacués par une canalisation 20., Ces canalisations 19 et 20 sont prolongées par une canalisation 21 amenant les gaz à un brûleur 22, destiné à chauffer le serpentin 6 ou à une cuve non représentée, ,le fonctionnement de l'appareil ci-dessus décrit peut être expli-' qué comme suit;
Cette arrivée de végétaux hachés dans le fond de la cuve a ten- dance à refouler vers le haut les végétaux qui s'y trouvent déjà et ont com- mencé leur fermentation;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
REVENDICATIONS.

APPARATUS FOR FERMENTATION OF PLANT PRODUCTS AND ESPECIALLY FOR THE
MANURE AND GAS PRODUCTION.
It is already known and used in many production devices. start the fermentation of plant products, in particular to produce manure, by circulating in the tanks the plants previously chopped and suspended in the manure. Hitherto, however, we have come up against great difficulties which have only been imperfectly solved and by means of relatively complicated mechanical devices, in order to convey the materials into the tanks and evacuate them. when fermentation is complete.
The present invention relates to an apparatus intended to provide a simple solution to this problem. It is based on the finding that. during the anaerobic fermentation, the gas bubbles which form remain for a certain time at least adhering to the plant strands and tend to carry them upwards in the liquid. 'Consequently, taking advantage of this observation, the invention consists in introducing' from the bottom into the fermentation tank (s), the suspension of plants in the manure, the plants rising naturally due to the upward force due to the formation of bubbles;
anddraining the manure formed at the upper part of the tank, using this continuous rise of material. The words "introduction to the lower part" and "discharge to the upper part" are to be understood here in their broad sense; between these two points, the material trajectory will not necessarily be vertical; it may be directed along an inclined path, provided it is ascending,
Under these conditions, on the other hand, the degree of fermentation of the product being treated is all the greater the higher the latter is in the tank.
Second, the apparatus is set up so that the level of liquid manure in the tank is maintained at a distance from the top of the tank; the upward force of the plants being treated is sufficient, as the experiments of the inventor have proved, to raise a thick mass of plants, already transformed into his manure, above the level of the liquid, which allows its easy extraction from the tank to the part
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
upper after said manure has naturally drained during its ascent above the level of the liquid,
The apparatus can be produced in various ways and certain variant embodiments will be described below:
they may include in particular the following provisions, used singly or in combination: a) the tank has in its upper part means for extracting the manure made; these means can consist of blades rotating around a vertical axis and pushing the material towards the periphery and from there into an evacuation duct,
The exhaust duct can be fitted with an extraction screw;
it is also possible to operate by simple gravity, b) the liquid manure after fermentation can be reused, possibly after reheating to bring the material to be fermented to the bottom of the tank, c) this liquid manure can be taken either in a compartment or an interval between double walls ,. or in an area of the tank where there are no solids, due to the shape of the paths followed by them. d) in a first variant embodiment, the tank comprises a double casing, the exterior being sealed and heat-insulated and the interior being provided with perforations in its upper part to limit the level of the liquid.
The treated materials are introduced into the casing from its bottom and the liquid manure is taken between the two casings, e) in a second embodiment. The suspended materials are introduced at the base of a single casing tank. ,, by a device giving them at least in the lower part of the tank a gyration movement .. so that they follow a helical upward trajectory, and substantially form a cone having its point downwards, leaving between it and the wall of the spaces which only contain liquid, and in which the liquid manure is taken.
f) in certain embodiments the discharge of the manure at the upper part is effected by a simple duct - or hopper - inclined downwards, comprising an outlet valve. g) it is possible to combine with this downward discharge pipe a particular form of tank which directs the manure by virtue of its sole upward force combined with the profile of the tank up to said discharge pipe,
Other characteristics of the invention will appear on the occasion of the description of certain variant embodiments of the invention, given by way of examples and represented in. accompanying drawings in which;

chopper 1, actuated by motor 2. The liquid manure, coming from the fermentation tank 3 via line 4 and delivered by motor 5 into a reheating coil 6., is sent under pressure via line 7 to the lower part of the chopper 1 for driving the chopped straw through the pipe 8 to the lower part of the fermentation tank 3 ..
This tank has a cylindrical outer wall 31 and one or more hollow sheaths 32 which communicate on the one hand with the inside of the tank 3 via holes 34 and, on the other hand, with an annular chamber 33, placed at the lower part by a pipe 32 '. The chamber 33 communicates through the pipe 4 with the coil 6, while the straw supply pipe 8 opens into the tank 3. The liquid manure, located in the tank, flows through the holes 34 and the pipe 32 'in the chamber 33. The top of the tank 3 is closed by a cover 9, a view of which is shown from below, FIG.
This cover 8 forms a hydraulic seal and for this purpose carries on its lower face a ring 91, which penetrates into a groove 35 of the tank 3. On its upper face, this cover 9 has a circular toothing 95, which meshes with a toothed pinion 10, which is driven by a motor 11. The rotation of the latter therefore causes the rotation of the cover 9. On its underside, as can be seen in FIG. 2, this cover 9 carries pallets central 92, which push the manure towards the periphery, intermediate pallets 93 which take up the manure discharged by the pallets 92 and peripheral pallets 94 which complete pushing the manure towards the periphery of the tank 3.
The tank 3 carries on its side wall a little below the pallets 92, 93, 94, an orifice 36 through which penetrates a transport screw 12, rotated without axial displacement by a motor 13. the screw 12 external to the tank 3 and the motor 13 are placed in a housing 14, which has a fixed gutter 15. The latter can be closed by a drawer 16 intended to prevent air from entering. Below this chute 15 is arranged another chute 17, which brings the manure falling from chute 15 into a cart 18.
The gases produced by the fermentation in the tank 3 are collected by a pipe 19 and those which may be in the casing 14 are discharged through a pipe 20. These pipes 19 and 20 are extended by a pipe 21 bringing the gases to a burner 22, intended to heat the coil 6 or to a tank not shown, the operation of the apparatus described above can be explained as follows;
The chopped straw entrained by the liquid manure is sent through the pipe 8 in the bottom of the central part of the tank 3,
This arrival of chopped plants at the bottom of the tank tends to push upwards the plants which are already there and have started their fermentation;
but above all its action is exerted in the same direction as the ascending force resulting from the gas bubbles which form and remain stuck to the vegetable particles. This results in a progressive ascensional movement of the whole of the mass during fermentation. On the other hand., As the straw rises in the central part of the tank 3, its degree of fermentation increases ,,
The arrival of material is controlled from the bottom of the tank under conditions such that fermentation is to the proper degree when the material reaches the top of the tank. tank.,
The liquid manure flowing through the holes 34 - or any similar weir - the manure continues to rise while dripping until it reaches the devices intended to ensure its evacuation. which are placed in the immediate vicinity of the cover.
There, it is driven by the pallets 92, 93, 94, towards the periphery and taken by the endless screw which discharges it through the conduit 15.
In the variant embodiment forming the subject of Figures 2 and 3, the tank also receives the plant materials to be treated from the bottom of the tank. This is single wall 24; its bottom is conical and continues with a vertical cylindrical part 23. At the lower part opens the inlet 33 of the material to be treated which has been mixed with liquid manure in the medium.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
langeur 30 fed by a reservoir 31 of chopped straw or the like. This inlet 33 is directed so as to cause as violent a rotation as possible of the liquid in the tank, which rotation promotes the rise of the treated materials.
As a result, the material is distributed in the tank substantially along a cone having its point downwards, and gradually rises as the fermentation continues.
The distribution of the material floating in the slurry leaves areas where only liquid is present, especially in recesses or notches such as 25 which could be, if necessary, provided with any deflectors or even suitable filtering walls. .
From this zone 25 a liquid manure discharge pipe 26, fitted with a level tube 27 which makes it possible to monitor the height of the liquid in the tank at any time. This pipe 26 leads, for example, in the direction of the arrows f1, the liquid manure in a heater 28, traversed by a heating fluid in the direction f2, or heated by any other means - for example with gas or by using waste heat - and by a pipe 29 in the mixer 30.
At its upper part, the tank has a conical part 37 sharp enough for the materials to circulate easily and not too much to limit the bulk, This conical part is continued by a dome 38 at the upper part of which is a paddle reel oblique 39 driven by a small motor 40, and playing a role similar to the paddles 92, 93, 94 of the previous variant for the evacuation of manure., On the side of the tank is a slot 41 ending in a sleeve evacuations for example in the form of a hopper 43, at the upper part of which is. , provided the outlet 42 of the gas formed.
The hopper 43 is closed by a valve 44 or the like which can, if necessary, be combined with any device intended to prevent unwanted inflows of air.
In order to improve the conditions under which the manure formed is entrained by the reel, the latter may include at its lower part a propeller 46 mounted on a deflector at its surface of revolution 47 intended to guide and entrain the manure. to pallets 48.
The operation of this device is substantially the same as that forming the subject of FIGS. 1 and 2. The mixture of material and liquid manure introduced through the orifice 33 (or several similar orifices) rises while gradually closing thanks to the action of the gas bubbles formed, the liquid manure not exceeding the level AA, moreover practically ill-defined, drips above it while continuing to rise and is discharged through the hopper 43.
In the variant shown in Figures 5 and 6, the principle of circulation is the same, but all the mechanical means of extraction are eliminated or simplified. The tank has two inclined bottoms 14a and 21a and the manure outlet is swan neck; the shapes of the device are sufficient to allow continuous circulation. As in the case of Figures 2 and 3, the liquid manure is taken in a recessed area 17a.
As a motor facilitating the displacements of material in the angles, the vermicular vibrations produced in suitably placed rubber tubes can be used by passing an abundant flow of liquid manure or water under pressure.
In all the cases considered so far, the tank has been assumed to be cylindrical. To clearly show that the shape of this enclosure can vary, there is shown schematically in plan, in FIG. 4, a different embodiment in which the horizontal cross section of this enclosure is rectangular.
Mixer-introducer 30 may be of any suitable construction. However, the following arrangement can advantageously be adopted.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In a cylindrical casing, preferably fluted 56 (FIG. 8), an Archimedean screw 55 mounted on a hollow shaft 54 is arranged.
This hollow shaft is mounted using a stuffing box 59 in the extension of the liquid manure inlet 29 (Figure 3). Into the space contained between the worm and the casing 56 arrives the material to be treated, contained in a tank or any feed device 31 (FIG. 3).
At the end of the hollow shaft 54 is a rotary knife 57 coacting with a counterpart 57 ', similar to those of meat grinders; this chopper opens into the mouth of a centrifugal pump 58, driven for example by a pulley 59 and which also receives the liquid manure coming from the pipe 29 after it has passed through its entire length. 'hollow shaft 54. This pump performs an intimate mixing of the liquid manure and the minced meat and sends it through the pipe 33 to the lower part of the tank 24 (FIG. 3). A valve-52 is used to adjust the flow.
As is known, in particular by the work of Omelianski, Winograski and Deherain and by the Edelmist process, in common use, it is advantageous to precede the anaerobic fermentation intended to make good manure and to produce combustible gases, by an aerobic prefermentation which is responsible in particular for breaking down the varnishes, gums and sugars which would hinder the fermentation proper. This pre-fermentation can be done in a sheath 61 (FIG. 7) which the air can pass easily by entering through 61 'and leaving through 61 and in which the waste is stored for one or more days. A suitable device such as a tap or orientable lance 62 makes it possible to seed this waste with suitable microbes.
At the lower part 63 of the sheath 61 is the mixing cylinder 56 previously described., Or any other similar. In order for the pre-fermentation to remain aerobic, the lower part 63 of the sheath preferably comprises an overflow pipe 65, or the like., Which constantly removes the manure poured into the sheath 61 and which does not eliminate it. the mixer.
