<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

"Method and devices for the manufacture of grooved parts"
The invention relates to a method and devices for the manufacture of grooved parts, more particularly grooved tools. The grooves of these parts can be of cylindrical or also conical cross section and are executed either parallel to the axis of the cylinder, or according to an elongated helix around the cylinder. The purpose of these grooves is above all to promote chip removal by the tool and also to form cutting edges at the right of the transition points between the grooves and the remaining intermediate surfaces, or to make the surfaces sharp. interrupted from the cylinder itself.
These tools
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
are known as taps, reamers, punches, shank counters, etc.
Until now, the grooves of these tools have been made exclusively by dobby removal, after having machined a shank or rod on a part of the forged bar or the starting rolls, whereby the diameter of the workpiece s' find it significantly reduced. The next step is to mill the grooves, and finally to sharpen the cutting edges of the edges, and in the case of taps, that of the thread as well.
The most important phase is the formation of the grooves. Various methods have already been recommended for replacing, by deformation processes without removing material, those, harmful 8, the resistance of the part, consisting in removing passas with a milling cutter.
The drawbacks of the grooving cutters of such parts or tools are particularly important in the case of helical grooves, in that, in addition to the weakening of the cross section, the rolled or forced longitudinal fibers are cut, which causes tearing. - res or frequently causes the tool to break.
In order to avoid these drawbacks, the following method has already been applied; the grooves are milled parallel
EMI3.1
Lement the axis, the niece is then shaped li, forging temperature in a mold, then-finally, in a second mold, the surfaces between the grooves are twisted in a helix.
This method is, however, excessively complex and slow, and deforces the core of the part, which thereby becomes disadvantageous to use, and this is why this method does not make it possible to avoid the other disadvantages which still result today. - ment of the use of other known working methods.
Finally, it was revealed to shape grooves by

l'dY '? 1) 101' Ol'tllâ "L '- l 1 l a.' 'S punches with curved frontal working surfaces, working cold in the part,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
work in alternating phases also making it possible to shape the thread of a tap. The mechanism of the punch forming the grooves then works with that of the punch to form the thread, alternately in and against the cold part respectively.
The material of the grooves will thus be forced towards the metal strips intermediate these grooves, without being limited to the periphery, after which the thread is pressed into the surface of the separation strips.
However, this method cannot be used for modern high speed steel parts, owing to the cold characteristics of the metal, cold working can only be applied to soft materials, which are not suitable for making high-speed tools. resistance. To make tools from rapid steel when hot, however, it is impracticable to push the material without limiting it towards the intermediate bands at the grooves, because during the hammering of the thread, these bands would be widened by flattening, abstraction. made of the lack of precision.
In addition, by all similar methods of external pressure upsetting, elongation of the part is unavoidable, which further contributes to lower accuracy. Finally, this method is absolutely inapplicable to the production of certain grooved parts described below.
In accordance with the invention, the method opens up a whole new path in the field of manufacturing tools of the type described. The essential characteristic of the invention resides in the fact that tools or pushing members similar to punches and surrounding the part on its entire periphery, push back the material of said part, brought to the forgeable state in the peripheral, radial and directional direction. axial towards the spaces between the grooves, so that the quantity of material released by the upsetting form is zero. This additional phase is executed in the manner of a rapid forging phase.
Punch-like pushing tools perform movements perpendicular to the workpiece axis, simultaneously and desmodromically, at
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
very rapid rate and substantially in the radial direction.
While these forcing members are moving, practically in the same plane, the part itself is propelled

under the ú1) tils r '": 1fouleurs to its axis rectilies; Yei -1' For the power to realize not s8ulerl ': mt das grooves / but, the, also helical, the part in axial can also simultaneously be subjected to rotation .
This machining phase is followed by the completion of the grooves, that is to say that the grooves are rewound over their entire section in such a way that, by a particular conformation of the delivery member described in more detail below. detail below, the grooves are first shaped during the same phase as that of the finishing, gradually from the edge to the bottom, as would a hobble, so that a continual push-back of the material occurs gradually from the bottom. In this way, the material of the part is not forced abruptly, but rather gradually and intermittently over the entire depth of the groove.
The device making it possible to apply the method according to the invention mainly comprises a plurality of rapid forging tools - 4 for example - working in the same plane under the action of a single control mechanism. The movement of the hammering tools is rectilinear, reciprocating, and desmodromically guided. These tools are. connected by connecting rods or their equivalent to eccentrics, cranks or the like, depending on. the intervention of known connections, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic or other, of a central commando mechanism so that the hammering tools execute in the direction of the axis of the part which they trap simultaneous movements and alike.
As has been described, the machining of the part must be done simultaneously and also over its entire periphery, and the pushing tools working in a way by rapid forging
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
are therefore shaped so as to trap the body of the part when they are together closest (the axis of the part.
In addition, the pushing members, the middle part of which is shaped as a pushing punch, also have lateral wings whose parallelism, to the axis is: most precise these wings having the curvature of the periphery of the part and being connected to the upsetting member via transition surfaces such as the upsetting tools as close as possible to the axis of the part cooperates to form a continuous internal surface.
The part, even when it has been brought to the forgeable state, is wedged in fixing means, coaxially attached to the new device, and similar to the mechanism for lifting and axially lowering a drilling machine. In order to be able to produce helical grooves as has been said, the mechanism for raising and lowering the part as well as for moving it parallel to the axis is also provided with a mechanism by which the part to be grooved can turn on its axis. when lifting or lowering.
The invention also relates to the particular conformation of the pushing tools which has been described, and which will be described in more detail below for its essential features.
First of all, it should be noted that, in order to obtain the best delivery efficiency without influencing the texture of the material upset, the upsetting or middle part of the punch must have a ship's hull profile, both longitudinally and in the sides. 2 other directions perpendicular to the axis, this profile being connected by transition surfaces to the stop surfaces of the body of the tool.
The middle part is streamlined in various ways depending on the destination of the pushing tool, and its section can be parabolic, hyperbolic, elliptical or also circular.
It is still essential, as regards the shape of the median part of the punch, that it is, on either side of the transverse axis of the longitudinal main plane of
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
symmetry, profiled flat downwards and extended upwards by streamlined transition surfaces, connected to a terminal plane. In addition, in the plane of symmetry perpendicular to the main plane of symmetry, the upsetting part has on either side of the middle a rounded shoulder, extending conically towards its top.
The appended drawings schematically represent an embodiment of the device of the invention suitable for the application of the new method. In these drawings:
FIG. 1 represents the simplified device in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a cross section on a large scale through the pushing tools.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through the object of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a partial view of the faired contour of the tool, seen from below.
FIG. 5 is a cross-section on a large scale. cross section of the tool.
Figures 6 and 7 are corresponding views, in elevation and from below, of the upsetting tool.
In Figures 1 and 2, the part 1 is of smaller diameter at the start of the grooving process and fixed by means not shown - so that it can be moved normally in the plane of the figure.
Several tools are arranged, of the same dimensions.
(four in the present case) to be able to be moved alternately in action of the arrows 4, in a plane perpendicular to the movement of the part - for example a horizontal plane - by means of guides 2. The free ends of the tools are articulated at 5 by means of a spindle, to a connecting rod 6, the four connecting rods being in turn articulated by pins 7 to cranks, eccentrics 8 or equivalent control means,
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical or others. Pinions 10 and a common toothed wheel 11 impart to the tools.; 2 a very fast reciprocating motion similar to high speed forging.
Figures 1 and 2 also show that the surfaces acting on the part, limiting the part of the tool, have a domed profile and join a cylindrical surface which only comes into contact with the part on a relatively small part of the periphery. . These various surfaces 14 and 15 longitudinally form a continuous enclosure, the cylindrical portions 15 of which correspond to the diameter of the semi-finished part, which exceeds by a few tenths of a millimeter that of the polished and sharpened part, that is to say finished. .
The process is detailed below in the light of Figures 2 to 4.
The tools., 3 having the surfaces 14 limiting the pressure members 17 in contact with the part and connected to the cylindrical surfaces 15 determining the dimensions of the semi-finished part ,, perform a rapid succession of back and forth movements, by the aforesaid control means, in the direction of the arrows. As these upsetting members 17 are in FIG. 3 terminated by ducted points 19, and that the part 20 is propelled towards the tools in the direction of the arrow 21, the upsetting tools penetrate into the material of the part in proportion to their penetration profile from the faired tip 19 towards the middle, the part 21 having been previously heated to the forging temperature.
As a result of the movement of the tools, the groove 14 is continuously rewound in jerks, this by the fact that the material is forced back in the radial and peripheral directions towards 26 and is arranged in the clocks 27, represented in squared lines to show the sense of reflection. The diameter l of the blank is brought by the treatment to the final% dimension, without any fibers being
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
sectioned, which is not so far the case by current methods.
FIG. 4 clearly shows that the streamlined shape of the front tip 19 of the tool ensures a discharge - in the direction of the arrows 29 - free of any tearing effect, wrinkling, or any other action whose repercussions would be harmful to the finished product.
The dotted lines 30 in FIG. 3 show how the tool gradually imprints the grooves in the propelled part in the direction of the arrow.
Without departing from the scope of the invention, the method and the device according to the invention can be replaced, both from a technological and kinematic point of view, by any corresponding technical equivalent, and likewise, the drilling phase. rapid can also be achieved by a pressing process analogous or similar to that mentioned.
The conformation of the tool appears even better by examining figures 5 to 7, where the body 31 of the tool is mainly parallelepipedal. The tool is articulated, on the side opposite to the workpiece, with connecting rods, cranks or the like, schematically described in figure 1.
As has been said, the working face of the tool has a part shaped like a mold, with in the middle a repeater body, symmetrically profiled on either side of the main plane of symmetry 33 according to a curve - visible from fig.5 - higher order ("höherer Ordnung") 34. This arrangement varies according to the needs of the work required. This section connects at 35 and 36 to another higher order curvature surface, ("hörerer Ordnung") of cylindrical shape.
In the present case, the tool is intended exclusively for the manufacture of tools provided with a shank of cylindrical section. perpendicular to the main plane of symmetry 33 and on either side of the transverse plane 38 the body of the tool is also symmetrical.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
ximatively up to the dotted lines 49 the section shown in Figures 5 and 7 and terminates at 40 in a streamlined portion 41 visible in section in Figure 3, and whose projection is shown in Figure 6.
These ducted ends extend, according to Figures 6 and 7, a little beyond the corresponding faces of the parallelepiped body 31 and are connected by transition surfaces 44 to the wings 35 and 36
It is preferable that, in the case of tools where the @ of the splined part is smaller than that of the shank, respectively the final diameter, that is to say for taps and end mills of small dimensions, the excess material is eliminated by lengthening the central part of the part.
Without departing from the scope of the invention, a tool similar to those described above can, in specific cases, be adapted to flat working faces, so as to be able to make grooves in flat parts, to provided that the retaining and lateral stop devices are provided accordingly,
CLAIMS.
1.- A method for the manufacture of grooved parts, and more particularly of grooved tools, characterized in that the upsetting members similar to punches and surrounding the piece around its entire periphery, push back the material of said piece brought to the state forgeable, in a periphral, radial and axial direction towards the intermediate spaces, at the grooves, so that the quantity of material detached by the upsetting form is zero.
