<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

B R E V E T D 'I N V ïs N.:. "': Machine for winding the wire, and particularly the wire for electric heating elements.
/ This invention relates to improvements to wire winding machines, and particularly to machines for winding wire on electric heating elements.
Some heating elements include a single jig on which a single strand of resistance wire is wound from end to end of this jig, and this winding can easily be performed on this jig by means of a machine. Other elements, however, include more than one template; thus, the element of an electric iron comprises two spaced apart and substantially parallel jigs, each of these jigs individually receiving a winding by means of a single continuous strand of wire with a flat section, which at one end of the heating element extends from each other of the jigs. Up to now, the winding of such elements comprising more than one template has not been carried out automatically by a machine.
The main reason is that if the jigs are placed end to end in a machine and if we
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
wind a single continuous strand of flat resistance wire from one end of the two jigs to the other, and if the jigs are then removed from the machine by rotating them to bring them to be parallel to each other, the wire joining the two templates have folds, and the complex article formed is thus rendered unsuitable for commercial use for reasons which will be apparent to those skilled in the art. As a result, the winding on these templates was invariably carried out by hand so as to avoid any bending of the wire.
In heating elements of the type described, the jigs are often irregularly shaped so as to suit the particular purposes for which the elements are intended (for example a jig may be wider at one end than at its end. 'other), and the thread pitch on these jigs can be changed in a predetermined manner to suit the particular shape of the jigs (thus the thread pitch can be of constant value over a predetermined length of the jig, but it can have a different constant value on the rest of the template).
Winding the yarn over heating elements in which the yarn pitch must be constant is in itself a difficult and tedious task considering that it is desirable that the turns be uniformly and equally spaced apart from one another. other, and if in addition the pitch of the wire must be different from one part of a jig to another, the task is made even more difficult and tedious, and the training of workers to perform the work properly is a relatively long task *
The object of the invention is to avoid the obligation to roll up the heating elements by hand by producing a machine which avoids the formation of folds in the elements,
thus saving time and labor and minimizing the learning time needed by workers.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
To this end, according to one of the aspects of the invention, this resides in the production of a machine which is intended to wind a filament simultaneously on two templates and which comprises: a releasable device making it possible to hold the templates end end and rotate them around a common axis, guides for guiding the ends of a single length of filament at a rate of one guide per template, and a device for simultaneously advancing these guides in opposite directions and longitudinally in relation to the templates.
The invention further relates to a machine for winding a filament on a core (and intended primarily for winding wire on jigs for the production of electric resistance heating elements) which comprises: means for holding and rotating the core around its own axis, means for forming a loop along the length of the filament at an intermediate point along the length of the core and for rotating this loop with this core, and means for guiding the filament to guide the two strands filament on either side of the loop, so as to wind these strands in a helix on the core on either side of said intermediate point. Aihsi, on the two parts of the core are wound helices with opposite steps.
It is understood that the expression "no au" is used in the present case in a broad sense and includes any member around which a wire is wound;, in the case of a heating element of the type described, this core consists of the template (s).
The characteristics of the invention are incorporated into the machine which will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Fig. 19 is a plan view of a heating element.
Referring to the drawings, the machine shown in fig.l is constructed and arranged to wind a resistance wire of flat section simultaneously on two jigs to produce the electric heating element 1 shown in fig. 19. This element com makes two identical jigs 2 in mica, which are placed end to end in the machine as shown in fig.l, which represents the machine when it s-; found at about the end of the winding operation. The general arrangement of the machine (which will be described more fully below) consists in that the templates are gripped by two terminal mandrels 3 and a central mandrel 4 by means of which these templates are rotated.
The wire is pulled from a supply spool 5, and a long loop is formed in the center of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the maohine, one of the strands of the loop being intended for one of the templates and the other strand for the other template. Each of the strands is guided by a guide 6 and carried by a carriage 7 which can move by one. reciprocating motion by means of a feed screw 8, so that the wire advances from the center of the machine to the outer ends of the jigs as these jigs are rotated. As a result, the wire is wound helically on the jigs in the desired manner.
We will now describe the machine in more detail while describing in dreary the complete sequence of operations.
The mandrels 3 are each fixed to the end of a short shaft 9 which can turn by means of the toothed wheels 10 (including one at each end of the machine) via the toothed wheels 11, 11a, and from a toothed wheel 12 carried on the main control shaft 13. The intermediate wheels They also control three toothed wheels 14 on the shaft 14 ', the central wheel 14 meshing with a toothed wheel 15 fixed on the central mandrel' 4. The latter is rotatably mounted on three rollers 16 carried by a trestle 17, said rollers having a peripheral rim engaging in a peripheral groove of the mandrel in order to avoid any transverse movement.
Before starting the machine, the various members are in the position shown in FIG. 2, in which the guiding devices 6 of the wire are spaced from one another by a maximum distance. The first operation consists in clamping the jigs 2 in the chucks 3, and fig.3 shows the clamping jaws of the chucks 3 (which are identical) in the open position. The end of the jig 2 has a hole 2a and is placed on the lower jaw 18, which carries a vertical pin 19 which is introduced into the hole 2a. This jaw 18 pivots at 20 and is pushed upwards by an adjustable spring 21, the amplitude of this upward movement being limited by pegs 22 sliding.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
in slots 23.
The upper jaw 24 is suspended by pegs 25 sliding in slots 26 and it is joined by a connecting rod 28 to a locking lever 27 pivoting at 29. To tighten the jig in place, the lever 27 is tilted in the opposite direction. clockwise looking at Fig. 3, so that the upper jaw 24 is pushed forward and down into a position in which it overhangs the end of the jig 2, and in which it pushes downward. down against the action of spring 21 to the position shown in fig.6. A flat face 27a of the lever 27 also engages behind a flat face 24a of the jaw 24 so as to lock the jaw in its clamping position.
The jaw 24 has a window 24b in which the stud 19 engages. The other end of the jig is then engaged on the lower jaw 30 of the central mandrel 4 (Figures 2 and 4) which pivots at 31 and is pushed upwards. by a spring 32, a tail 33 of this jaw can engage against a stop 34 in order to limit the upward movement.
We now tighten the perforated end of the second jig in the other terminal mandrel 3 (in the same way that we tightened the first jig in the first mandrel) and the other end of this jig is also placed on the jaw lower 30 of the central mandrel 4 so as to cover the end of the first mandrel over a short distance. The upper jaw 35 of the central mandrel 4 pivots at 36 and it can be moved by hand into the clamping position shown in figs.5 and 6 by moving a button 37 in the slot 38; a locking lever 39 pivoting at 40 can be moved by sliding a button 41 in the slot 42 to the locking position, in which a shank 43 of the lever 39 engages behind a shank 44 of the jaw 35.
A leaf spring 45 is provided with a hooked end 45a arranged to engage in a hole 35a of the jaw 35
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
so as to temporarily maintain the jaw in a stable position in its open position.
The templates 2 having been aisi tightened in place, the next operation is to place the wire so that it is ready to be wound. Referring to Fig. 7, it will be noted that the wire runs upward from the supply spool 5 (which is suitably tensioned by means of an elastic arm 5a) to a position in which it is temporarily clamped in a resilient clip 46, such as a note clip.
This clamp is suspended by a cord or wire 47 which passes over pulleys 48 and carries a weight 49 down at its end by means of a spring 50. This weight 49 is mounted so as to slide vertically on guide rods 51, and in its lower position it rests on a stopper 52. In order to prevent the wire from twisting, the clamp 46 is provided with an eyelet 53 through which passes a cord or guide wire fixed 54.
The thread is first pulled by hand so as to form a loop as shown by the broken lines 56, taking care to draw the additional quantity of thread from the spool while leaving the clamp 46 stationary. The loop thus formed is threaded. through a groove or slot 4a directed inwardly from the periphery towards the center of the mandrel 4 (see fig. 8), and this loop is passed around a vertical stud 55 fixed to the lower jaw 30 like the shows fig. 10. When this position has been obtained, the guides 6 are advanced towards the center of the machine (by hand in a manner which will be described below).
Each of the guides, as shown in Fig. 9, is formed of an angled strip 56 having a guide groove 56a and carrying a guide pulley 57, and each of the wire strands located on either side of the mandrel 4 is driven first into the grooves 56a, then down and then around the pulleys 57, taking care that the initial loop of the wire is placed correctly so that the flat faces are vertical behind the stud 55 and

horizontal where the wires cross the templates, as @e shows in fig. 10.
We now turn on the machine. To this end, a lock 58 (figs.1 and 12) is removed from a hole in a sliding bar 60 to which is attached a fork 61 actuating a friction clutch. The friction clutch is shown at 59 and the axially movable part 59a of this clutch is wedged on the main shaft 13, while the relatively fixed part of the clutch is controlled by the belt 62 from an engine.
The lock being withdrawn and the clutch being engaged, the various wheels 10, 11a, 12 and 14 are rotated so as to rotate the mandrels 3 and 4 by means of the shafts 9 and so as to advance the guides 6 from the center of the machine to the outer ends of the jigs, causing the wire to spiral onto the jigs. The advancement of the guides 6 by means of the advancing screws 8 takes place as follows. The carriages 7 to which the guides 6 are fixed are mounted so as to slide on two horizontal guide bars 63, and each carriage also carries an arm 64 pivoting at 65 on a yoke fixed to the carriage.
This arm 64 carries a pin or finger 66 (fig. 2) which engages in the dets of the advancement screw, and this arm is pushed normally so as to engage with the screw by means of a spring. coil 67 (fig.12), from which it follows that when the advancement screw turns, the finger 66, the arm 64, the carriage 7 and the guide 6 all together undergo an advancing movement.
So that the jigs 2 are supported as close as possible to the position in which the wire is wound, each jig is associated with a stroke stabilization device comprising two rollers 68 (at the rate of one roll of, each side of the jigs: fig. .6 and 11) which are fixed on slides 69 which can slide in a disc 70 and pulled towards each other
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
by springs 71. This disc is arranged so as to be able to rotate with the templates and to be able to advance with the guides 6 thanks to the fact that it is supported by a cage-shaped frame 72 freely mounted on the shaft 9 and connected by a fork 73 to the carriage 7 (fig.2).
These rollers 68 are therefore placed immediately behind the guides 6 and they advance at the same time as the guides, always keeping the same relative position.
Two noses 74 fixed on the ooulissels 69 at each end of the roller engage at the outer end of each advance stroke on two cams 75 in the form of wedges (at the rate of one cam on each side of the associated terminal mandrel 3) so as to open the noses and separate them as shown in fig. 2. In this position the rollers are beyond the ends of the template, leaving the way free to remove a template lined with wire or to fix a new one. When we have just fixed new templates and when the wire is ready to be placed on the guides 6, these guides are advanced towards the center as indicated above.
This maneuver, which is carried out by lifting the arm 64 so as to release the finger 66 from the feed screw 8 and by moving the carriage by hand towards the center of the machine, at the same time releases the rollers. 68 (which disengage from the cams 75 and roll over the jig) towards the center of the machine.
When the desired amount of wire has been wound up, the clutch 59 is automatically triggered so as to stop the machine by engaging the adjustable screw stop 76 (fig. 12) fixed on the right carriage 7 against the end of the sliding bar 60. As soon as the stopper has pushed the bar so as to release the clutch, the latch 58 is pushed so as to engage it in the hole of the sliding bar and to lock it in the stop position .
The wire is then cut at the ends of the filled jigs as shown in fig. 15. We make a cut
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
first in the vicinity of the region of the guide pulley 57 on the left, the end leading from the jig being released as shown by the dotted lines, while the other end leading from the supply reel is held at the mein. On the right side we see that the elastic clamp 46 has been pulled close to the pulley 57 (and the weight 49 not shown has been lifted to the top) by the wire which, starting from the template, goes towards the clamp.
The short end of the wire held by the clamp is then released, leaving it free as shown by the dotted lines, and the clamp is then attached on the other side on the cut end of the wire which leaves the supply spool.
The clamp is then released and it rises in the starting position shown in fig.7 under the action of weight 49; a new portion of wire is thus automatically drawn along a measured length. To remove the wire-lined jigs, the chuck clamping members are opened and the two jigs are given a twisting movement in order to remove them longitudinally, one of these jigs having to pass through the opening 3a in the the mandrel 3. -when they are removed, the templates are end to end, the wire forming a loop between them, as shown in fig.16.
To complete the element, the jigs are rotated by 90 to the position shown in fig. 17, then they are made to perform a twisting movement to form another turn on each jig, which brings them closer to one of the 'other as shown in fig. 18.
It is highly desirable that the thread pitch on the jig gradually becomes smaller and smaller as it moves towards the narrow end of this jig, and this condition can be easily achieved by means of the machine described above by varying the speed of advance of the wire ... To this end, the feed screw 8 comprises a variable-pitch propeller or thread. The point where the pitch changes preferably corresponds
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
practically at the point on the template where the width varies. This condition is clearly represented in the example of Figs.
13 and 14 where the narrow end of the jig at a is wound at a very small pitch by the corresponding small pitch part A of the feed screw. The wider end of the jig located at b is wound under a much larger pitch by the large pitch part B of the feed screw, while between the narrow portion and the wide portion of the jig at c, the thread pitch is an intermediate pitch made by the portion C of the feed screw, the pitch of which also has an intermediate value.
If desired, the wire can be cut, measured and re-fed automatically between successive winding operations.
