<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Improvements made to machines for cutting or shearing sheet metal or similar materials".
The present invention relates to machinas for cutting or shearing sheets or similar materials, in which the cutting tool is actuated by an articulated or toggle assembly comprising two arms, one of which is articulated at a fixed age and the other at a fixed height. an axis integral with the tool holder, said arms being able to be driven by a transverse oscillatory movement in a plane forming a right angle with these articulation axes, which movement is produced using a connecting rod or analogous which acts on the intermediate articulation axis of the toggle, In known machines of this type the fixed articulation axis of the articulated assembly can be brought to two extreme positions,
that is to say a

@ active position in which the tool holder moves so that the cutting edges of the cutting tools are relatively close to each other and a position for empty work and in which these edges are spaced apart by a greater distance so that the work can be introduced freely between these edges. This displacement is obtained, preferably, by modifying the location of the fixed articulation axis of the articulated assembly, this axis being eccentric so that the fixed articulation axis can come to occupy a high position and a higher position. low position.
For cutting sheets of varying thicknesses and of different materials, it has been found desirable to be able to adjust the length of the stroke of the movable tool and the number of strokes thereof within certain limits. For an articulated or toggle assembly of the type specified, this adjustment can be effected by varying the amplitude of the oscillatory and transverse movements of the two arms on either side of the plane passing through the external articulation axes. laughing at this set:. The movement is then preferably adjusted so that the arms are obliged to oscillate symmetrically on both sides of said plane, in one case, and in substance on one side of this plane, in another case.
The transverse movement of the intermediate axis of the arms is supposed to be done with a constant amplitude and frequency'- In the first case a movement resulting from the tool is obtained which is distinguished by a small stroke and a certain oscillatory frequency while in the other case we obtain a greater stroke of the o; util at a frequency half less than that of the previous case.
In machines, known hitherto, these conditions of movement have been achieved by actuating the intermediate articulation axis of the arms of the en-

seems to be articulated by means of a connecting rod, the other end of which is driven by an angular movement under the control of an eccentric rotating around a rigid shaft and whose eccentricity can be adjusted in any way appropriate. The same effect can be obtained by adjusting the position of the axis of rotation of the eccentric at varying distances from the plane passing through the outer hinge axes of the articulated assembly.
In both cases of; separate means must be provided by which the modification of the length of the stroke of the cutting tool or the displacement of the fixed point of the articulated assembly, towards its high position or its low position, is made possible.
The object of the present invention is to provide simplified means for modifying the length of the stroke and which consist, mainly, in making the arterial axis adjustable.

Fixed tiqulation of the articulated or toggle assembly between several fixed locations by being moved transversely with respect to the direction of movement of the tool holder, such that the plane, passing through the two articulation axes of said assembly, can be brought to different distances from the extreme positions of the intermediate articulation axis.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, certain embodiments of the invention.
Figs. 1 and 2 show, schematically, an embodiment of the invention in which the constituent parts occupy different positions in these figures.
Figs. 3 and 4 show, respectively in view in. end and in longitudinal section, the. method of mounting the fixed articulation axis of the articulated or toggle assembly.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
On the rotary shaft 1, at a fixed location, of the motor driving the machine, an eccentric is mounted, the crankpin of which is designated by 3 and the radius of which is equal to R. The movement of the crankpin 2 is transmitted by a connecting rod L to the intermediate articulation axis of the articulated or toggle assembly, this axis being able to occupy two extreme positions @ and 4 at a distance 2R from each other. The upper and fixed articulation axis is designated by 5 while 6 is the lower position of the lower articulation axis, which is guided vertically, while 7 is the upper position of this axis. and correspond to the extreme points of the stroke of the cutting tool during its work.
According to fig. 1.1 'intermediate axis of the toggle moves at variable distances from the plane passing through points 5 and 6. This gives a relatively long active stroke 6-7 and a very small additional stroke 6-9 gour the tool holder. The fixed articulation pin5 is mounted in an eccentric bearing and can therefore be brought to point 8 by angular displacement of the corresponding bearing so that the entire articulated assembly is raised and the tool holder can be moved a greater distance from the corresponding fixed cutting tool (not shown). The tool then runs empty and the opening can be introduced between the Cutting tools.
Fig, 2 shows the hinge pin after it has been brought to position 5 'which is achieved by further rotating the eccentric bearing. The position is, of; preferably, such that the distance between the extreme position 6 of the movable axis and either of the positions 5 and 5 'of the fixed and adjustable axis remains the same in ± two cases. At the same time, the aforementioned fixed axis is moved relative to the other unloaded parts of the assembly so that the plane, passing through the end points 5t and / /

6 of the articula assembly can be brought to a symmetrical position with respect to the extreme positions 3 'and 4' of the intermediate axis, these positions being fixed with respect to the plane passing through 5 and ô.
In this way, a shorter active stroke is obtained for the tool holder, which moves maintained between points 6 and 7 'with a frequency which is twice as great as in the case of fig. 1.
On figs 3 and 4 the fixed articulation axis 10 comprises an operating handle 11 which can be angularly displaced around a pivot 13 in a slot made in) a journal 12 of the axis, at the last which can be maintained in the desired position by engaging the handle in one of the three notches 14 of the eccentric bearing of the journal 12, these notches 14 being spaced 90 from each other.
The angle formed between these notches, determining the characteristic positions of the axis 10, can obviously be different, for example another. active position can be provided between positions 5 and 8. The adjustment of the position of the fixed axis can also be: obtained with the aid of rectilinear sliders or the like.
The advantage obtained by the invention lies mainly in the fact that the lifting of the cutting tool and the adjustment of its stroke can be carried out using the same control lever. Furthermore, the invention greatly simplifies the adjustment of the length of the stroke since this adjustment can be obtained by a single maneuver, even during operation of the machine.
The invention also makes it possible to house the simple and compact assembly of the adjustment mechanism in a closed box.
