(Fig. 2).

Method and furnace for annealing glass.
This invention relates to the annealing of glass after it has cooled as it leaves the melting furnaces. We know that whatever the manufacturing method used ,. the nature, kind or form of the objects manufactured, the glass undergoes in its mass, during its solidification, internal tensions which
make it unstable and fragile. To eliminate these tensions, it is customary to subject the objects, at the end of manufacture, to an operation.

ple.
The furnaces used for this purpose, called "annealing arches", generally have the. forms long tunnels in which combustion gases or hot air circulate in the opposite direction to the charge, or sometimes in the opposite direction and sometimes in the same
meaning that this one. Despite the care taken in this operation, it gives rise to significant manufacturing waste, which can

intended for firing decorations on glass.
The present invention is based on the observation of
fact that this significant production of waste is due to an unequal distribution of temperatures in the furnace and its aim is to avoid this drawback and to achieve a complete elimination
waste. For this purpose, in accordance with the invention, one makes
pass the objects to be annealed through a series of successive zones
in each of which they are subjected to a uniform temperature, by blowing a stream of air or gas at a determined temperature. These currents are directed transversely through the load so as to ensure simultaneously, as well as uniformly, the heating and then the cooling of all the objects forming this load.
The oven according to the invention consists of a series of zones or chambers each provided with heating and ventilation means, to ensure, by the circulation of heated currents
and directed transversely to the advance of the load, uniform temperature conditions for all objects located in
the same room. The advancement of the load in the furnace can be done continuously or intermittently, the objects introduced.

or at the temperature at which they are at the outlet of the manufacturing apparatus. In either case, the temperature setting of each chamber is determined so as to produce a gradual temperature variation, and the ventilation of the oven ensures temperature uniformity at all times at each point of the chamber. charge. In this way, the conditions are achieved which ensure the methodical elimination of internal glass tensions, the stabilization of the products and the elimination of waste.
For. To make the invention fully understood, an annealing furnace corresponding to the data of the invention will be described below by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.

The oven shown consists of a tunnel 1 comprising

poured from end to end by an apron 2 carried by rollers 3 and on which the loads of objects to be annealed are placed. In the example considered, transverse walls 17 running along the internal walls of the tunnel divide the latter into as many communicating rooms as there are zones, but this division is not essential.
Above and below each zone or chamber are arranged heating batteries, for example electric resistances 4, 5, in sheaths 6, 7, separated from the zone or chamber by sheets 8, 9, but communicating on each side
with her. On one or each side of the area or chamber there is a fan 10 driven by an electric motor 11
(Fig. 2). A double transverse circuit is thus created in each zone or chamber, the fan driving the air on the one hand upwards on resistors 4, on the other downwards on resistors 5, as indicated by the arrows, the two streams meeting at the opposite side of the furnace and returning together through

crowds by the fan. A screen 13 is placed in front of the fan and others 14, 15 in the extension of the sheets 8, 9 to uniform the flow rate over the entire section of the chamber.
A pyrometer 16 makes it possible to take into account the temperature in each zone. This can be adjusted, for example, by means of a thermostat acting on the resistors 4, 5 so as to maintain the temperature constant throughout the duration of the treatment of objects of the same nature.
Thus, for example, with zone a being the loading and preheating zone, the load carried by the apron 2 will be sustained.
