Monsieur ACHILLE PLOTTIER
RUE VICTOR ALLARD, 16
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

DESCRIPTION.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
&&&&&&&&&&
PLANCHE 8 FIG. 16 .
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
PLANCHE 8 BIG. 18
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
PLANCHE 9 FIG. 19 .
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
&&&&&&&&&& Planche 10 - Fig. 20.
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

To ensure the regular tension of the chain 3, a spring 10 is interposed on part A of the chain suricette part of the chain there is no traction: leres = sort 10 ensures a regular tension of the chain 3.
To avoid disturbing the mechanism when backing up with the bicycle, a piece of special chain 11 fig. 10. ' with double row of links will be inserted in the part of chain 3 in B; with this double chain there is a space between the two rows of the width of the teeth of pinion 5. When the handlebars come to their fullest extent, this special chain B is placed on the free pinion 5 and allows it to turn in both directions so that the teeth of pinion 5 are released from the ordinary chain and it no longer has any grip on the mechanism; in the absence of this special end of chain there is a risk of disturbing the device because the ordinary chain prevents the bicycle from rolling back.
As soon as the handlebar @ 1 goes up, the pinion 5 is engaged and the machine can be actuated by the rotational movement of the crankset. This special chain 11 fig. 3 double can also be placed so that it is on the free sprocket when the handlebars are at its highest point instead of its lowest point at full stroke.

rotating the front wheel of the bicycle.
The handlebars can be made fixed or free at will by means of a brake handle or lever (15) placed within reach of the hand by which a spring lock (16) placed in the center of the handlebars 1 is controlled.
So that the handlebars are free, we pull on the handle (15), the spring lock (16) is released from the sector (17) - to make it fixed, it suffices to release the handle (15), the lock spring (16) will house it in one of the openings of the sector (17) - the sector (17) is integral with the rigid stem (4) and serves to fix the handlebars (1) and also as a guide to the latter; for this purpose the handlebar (1) is provided at its center with a stripe serving as a slide guiding with the sector (17) ensuring absolute rigidity of the handlebar (1) and keeps it in the center and therefore is always in opposite the sector holes (17), for fixing the handlebars (1).
The sector (17) is perforated with several holes in order to allow the handlebars (1) to be placed higher or lower and to allow the cyclist to take different positions. The sector (17) ends at its base with a hook serving to stop the handlebars (1) at full stroke and which can serve as a fulcrum. The handlebars (1) with four handles will be riders preferably used by / and speed enthusiasts.

PLATE 3 fig. 8.
So that the control is done by pressure instead of traction, the chain 3 which has its point of attachment at 2, instead of going down, will go up to the pulley 4, will go down by the pulley 5 to the free pinion 6, will go up again. pulley 7 to be fixed in 2 to its starting point on the handlebars 1.
This command can be applied to the rear wheel by extending the chains and placing pinion 5 of the crankset on the rear wheel; in this case 2 small pulleys serving as guides will be placed, one under the crankset and the other above. . (see fig. 13 pi. 4) &&&&&&&&&&
PLATE 4 fig. 11.
Double-acting thruster acting on the pedal.
The new thruster system Plate 4 fig. 11 shows the apparatus with the rigid stem B of a smaller model and without support at its end; the rotation of the crank axle of a bicycle being slower than that of a front wheel, one can reach a larger development and in this way does not require a handlebar stroke as great as the propulsion of the front wheel; the length of chain section that will be pulled will be shorter while giving greater development and handlebar movement more nent than that acting on the front wheel. This model will be more appreciated for high speeds.

Double movement on crankset - PLATE 4 fig. 11.
The double-acting thruster acting on the bicycle crankset by transmission of chains, rods or cables and fitted with a return pulley mounted on a spring fork 11 fig. 12.
The movement of the handlebar 1 remains the same as in FIG. 1 of plate 1. The difference consists in the change of chain transmission, an additional deflection pulley and the chain attachment point. When the handlebars 1 is at the top of its stroke, the ohains 3 attached
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
in 3 goes up to pulley 4, goes back down passing over pulley 5 and pinion 6, goes back up to deflection pulley 7 which it bypasses and goes back down passing over pinion 8, goes up to pulley 9 and joins its attachment 2 the handlebars 1.
By pressing on the handlebar 1 to push it downwards, a traction is exerted on the chain 3 which rotates the pinion 6 screwed on the crank axle or on the left crank of the bicycle; in the descent of the handlebars 1, the pinion 8 freewheels and turns in the opposite direction; when the stroke is reached, traction is exerted on the handlebars 1 and during the ascent, the pinion 8 is engaged and in turn actuates the crankset; at this moment, the pinion 6 is freewheeling.
The return pulley 7, which has its point of attachment to the lug 10 of the frame tube, is held by a small fork 11 mounted on a spring which ensures a regular and flexible tension to the chain and takes up the play or the lengthening of it &&&&&&&&&&
The simplified thruster Plate 5 Fig. 14 with change of speed controlled on the pedal by means of a lever mounted on a free pinion and controlled by the handlebars 1-
The left handlebar fork 1 is fitted with a movable attachment 3 serving to fasten the chain 4 which descends by passing over the pulley 5 and will be fixed to the lever 6 which is integral with the free sprocket 7 Fig. 15 screwed onto the left hand crank 8 or onto the crankshaft.
A return spring 9 attached to the lever 6 and to the attachment 10 placed on the base tube of the frame will act as a return for the chain 4 and ensure a flexible and regular tension.
The control is done by traction; when lowering the handlebars 1, the lever 6 will be returned to the rear by the spring 9. The pinion at this moment is disengaged or free and the lever 6 is returned to the rear. By raising the handlebars 1, the lever pinion will engage and rotate the bicycle crankset.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
On plate 5 is shown the new gear change means forming part of the present patent application.
This change of speed is obtained by moving the attachment 3 of the chain 4 by moving the attachment 3 towards the end of the yoke 2 center of rotation A.
The lever arm of the handlebar 1 is extended; the reach between the handles of the handlebars and the point of attachment is longer and therefore it makes it possible to produce a greater effort especially as the development will be smaller and gives an advantage to climb the a8tes.
The opposite occurs by moving the attachment 3 back towards the handles; the handlebar arm 1 is shortened and gives greater development.
The same effect can be obtained by moving the point of attachment of the chain 4 to the lever 6 by raising it towards its end. The attachment points can be moved by flexible control and brake lever placed * within reach of the cyclist; this speed change can be applied to different models of this patent.

PLATE 8 FIG. 16.
Plate 6 represents the same mechanism as FIG. 8 Plate 3with the difference that this model controls the rear wheel instead of the crankset. It suffices to porn along the chain so that it communicates with the rear sprocket 1 on the left side,; in this case two small pulleys 2 and '3 serving as guides for the aables, rods or chains arranged on the frame between the rear wheel and the pulleys to prevent the latter from sloshing. The control cables and chains can pass in a straight line from pinion 1 to pulleys 4 and 5 or follow the tubes of the bicycle frame; the movement is the same as that of the preceding descriptions, by treatment, by pressure or both movements together :.
In this case the chains, gears and pulleys
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
will be in double sets, ie two pinions at the rear wheel instead of one and four intermediate pulleys at the pedal and at the steering head.

PLATE 7 BIG. 17.
Double-acting thruster acting on the pedal of the bicycle, with transmission by pulleys, cables or return spring rods, Plate 1 Fig. 17.
A chain 3 is attached to the handlebars 1 at 2 which rises from its attachment point 2 and passes over the pulley 4, descends and passes over the pulley 5, goes towards the free pinion 6 which it turns around and s 'attaches to the tab 7 fixed on the frame tube 8.
The pinion 6 can be fixed on the left crank inside or on the axle of the bicycle crank on the left side. A second chain 9 is also fixed at 2 to the handlebar 1, goes down by passing over the grooved pulley 11, goes towards the pinion 12 which it bypasses and will also be attached to the lug 7.
Chains 3 and 9 both end with a coil spring 13 and 14; these springs recall the ends of chains on which a traction is exerted and maintain a regular tension by taking up the play and 1 elongation thereof.
By pushing the handlebars 1 downwards, the chain 3 is pulled upwards passing over the grooved pulley 4 and rotates the pinion 6 which controls the crankset of the bicycle; at this moment the pinion 12 is freewheeling and the coil spring 13 relaxes while the spring 14 closes; when the stroke is reached, the handlebars 1 are pulled to bring it upwards and a traction is exerted on it. the chain 9 which in turn controls the pinion 12 and actuates the crankset. At this moment, it is the pinion 6 which is freewheeling and the spring 14 relaxes by traction while the spring 13 closes to return the end of the chain.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
PLATE 8 BIG. 18
Plate 8 Fig. 18 represents a movement simplified by traction with speed change: on the handlebars 1 on the fork 2 on the right there is a movable fastener 3 with a slide which serves as an attachment point for the chain 4 which descends directly to the free pinion 5 and goes up to the front and attach to the tab 6 placed on the yoke 7 of the front fork.
Chain 4 ends with a coil spring 8 which will serve as a return for chain 4.
Handlebars 1 will descend when empty without producing any effect; the pigmon 5 at this moment; freewheel and turns in the opposite direction of the advance of the machine. Going up, pinion 5 will engage and actuate the front wheel. At this moment the coil spring 8 will relax by the traction on the handlebars 1 which goes up.
On the other hand, when lowering the handlebars 1, the spring 8 will close again and recall the end of the chain 4 to which it is attached and will always ensure the flexible and regular tension.

PLATE 9 FIG. 19.
So that the control is done by pressure (see Fig. 19 Plate 9) a small pulley 9 is placed on the rigid post 10 through which the chain will rise before being fixed to the attachment 3.
The gear change is obtained by moving the attachment 3 of the chain 4; the closer the attachment 3 is to the axis 11, the center of rotation of the handlebars 1, the more the development will be weak or small and by moving it away from the axis 11 it will be greater; the effort to be given will be proportional to the position of the attachment 2, which means that the effort to be given will be stronger or weaker.
Its two combinations 18 and 19 can be applied to the same bicycle. In this case, the double movement is obtained, i.e. the combination of Fig. 18 will operate the machine by traction and movement Fig. 19 by
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
by pressure.
Development can be further increased by letting the fork 2 protrude towards the rear of the handlebars 1 and placing the clip 3 at the end of the fork 2 ± see Fig. 18 of plate 8) ;; the 3 $ is clip, for the same movement of the handlebars the end of the chain withdrawn upwards will be longer and will increase the development.
The multiple toothed sprocket can be applied to the various models of this patent if the thruster is to be geared by shifting the chain from one sprocket to another.
&&&&&&&&&& Plate 10 - Fig. 20.
The new thruster, plate 10 Fig. 20, represents a model which differs from the others by its bracket 2 of reduced length without support at its end.
Despite the reduction of the stem 2, the handlebar 1 retains a powerful lever arm and is removable. The fork 3-3 instead of forming a body with the handlebars 1 will form a single independent part of the handlebars 11 board 10 fig. 20) The handlebars 1 will be slidably mounted on the passing end 4, at the rear of the fork 3-3 and will be adjustable so as to allow the rider to take his position exactly according to his size. On the right fork 3 is fixed the chain 6 to a zipper 5; the chain descends directly to the free pinion 7 with double or triple teeth, goes up by the front face passing on the pulleys 8-8 placed on the stem 2 and goes down by the rear to its starting point. This system acts by traction.
Figure 21 is of the same type, but acting by pressure; as a difference, only the zipper 5 changes position, it goes on the front face of the pulley @ 8- @ instead of the rear face of the left side.
The combinations 20 and 21 can be adapted on
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
the same thruster, one by traction 1 right and the other by pressure on the left; in this case the propulsion is a double movement, one by pressure, the other by traction.
The change of speed by derailment of the chain is obtained by passing the chain from one pinion to another as described and drawn on plate 1 freeze 1. A second means of changing the speed s 'obtained by the displacement of the slide fastener 5. The spring 9 ensures the extension or the retraction of the chain so that it matches the different diameters of the multiple toothed sprocket and ensures a regular and normal tension .
In order for the chain to keep a straight line with the different teeth of the pinion 7, the pulleys 8-8 will be mounted on pins 11-11 having a sufficient length to allow the pulleys 8-8 to move automatically to the right. - te and to the left to follow the movement of the chains and stay in a good line, matching the teeth of the pinion 7 on which the chain moves when changing gears.
&&&&&&&&& Plate 11-¯ Figurē22¯ represents a thruster with traction control and rigid rods instead of chains and cables and acting on the front wheel, on the rear wheel or on the crankset of the machine.

On the turntable of the handlebars 1 is the Z attachment to which the rod 4 fits which is fixed to its base to the lever 5 of the free pinion 6; by raising the handlebars 1, the front wheel rotates; by lowering the handlebars 1, the pinion 6 freewheels and spins unladen in the direction opposite to the forward motion of the machine.
By raising the handlebars 1, the free gear 6 engages and rotates the front wheel of the bicycle.
The control can be done on the crankset by attaching the rod 4 to a bracket 7 placed at the bottom of the ball head and a second rod 8 which will be attached from the top to the bracket

7 in 9 and from the bottom to lever 5 of the free pinion 6.0 z The control can be done at the rear wheel by a linkage A which has its upper attachment point to the tab 9 of the bracket 7 and passes directly to the lever 5 of the free sprocket 6 placed on the rear wheel of the bicycle, left side.
The lever 5 in which the free pinion 6 is housed is fitted with a shim 10 acting as a clutch and allowing the lever, when disengaging, to release itself from the free pinion 6 so that it can turn in all directions and allow the clutch to be released. machine to reverse without inconvenience; the wedge can be operated by flexible control with brake lever 24 within easy reach. For the lever, 5 to be engaged with the free pinion 6, it suffices to release the lever 24; the tip of the wedge is fixed between 2 teeth of pinion 6 to engage it. The opposite occurs when pulling the handle 24. To avoid holding the handle in hand when the setting is disengaged, the handle 24 is provided with a stop 24a which prevents the lock from being reset. Plate 11 Fig. 23 drawing of the wedging - Fig. 24 drawing of the lever setting lever 5, the same lever serving as a fixing for the mobile handlebar.
&&&&&&&&&& Plate-12 New thruster system according to the above various claims acting by traction or by pressure or both movements and acting on the pedal or on the rear wheel of the bicycle and consisting of: two fixed gears 3 and 4 placed at the base of the ball head are wedged together screwed on a cup 5 mounted on a ball bearing with a space between the two for the passage of chains. An endless chain 6 has its attachment point 7 on the rear face of the handlebar 1, descends to the fixed pinion 3 which is located inside on the cup 5, goes up towards the front of the handlebar 1 by passing over the groove pulley 8 and returns to its starting point attaohe 7.

A second endless chain 8 starting from the fixed pinion 4 which is on the outside screwed on the cup 5 descends to the crankset and bypasses the free pinion 9 screwed on the left crank 10 and goes back to its starting point.
These system can be made to act by pressure by attaching the chain link 6 to the front face of the handlebars 1 instead of the rear face.
The movement can be combined in dual control, that is to say in both directions by mounting everything in duplicate on the same machine.

Figure 6, Plate 2 shows the new propellant handlebar system fitted with the compensating springs serving as shock absorber suspension and automatic propellant. For this purpose on the rigid stem 2 there is a cross member 3 serving as an attachment point for the coil springs 4-4 acting by extension and acting as an automatic propellant constituting an appreciable aid for the cyclist.
The springs @ -4 are fixed at their base to the rod bodies 5-5 forming * with the handlebar 1 which they cross and on which they are screwed.
Example: in the simple movement by pulling the handlebars
1 descends without producing any effect; it happens that the beginner and even the regulars have the impression of falling into the void when they shift the handlebars; to avoid dropping the body on the handlebars, the cyclist must hold the body straight; he must avoid pressure on the handlebars as he descends without offering resistance.
With the propellant handlebars fitted with springs 4-4, on the contrary, this unpleasant sensation is not avoided but we have the great advantage of being able to throw the weight of the body forcefully on the handlebars in its descent; this relaxes the coil springs. 4-4.
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
EMI14.1
These being strongly relaxed react by closing abruptly and by automatically exerting a vigorous pull to bring the handlebars 1 upwards by causing an automatic propelling force by returning the handlebars to its highest travel point.
The little tractive effort of the cyclist combined with the reaction of the 4-4 springs when going up constitutes an appreciable and more powerful aid than the effort that could be given with the force of the arms alone and therefore the unpleasant effect the feeling of falling into the void by the downward movement of the handlebars is suppressed.
Another advantage of the 4-4 springs is that they play the role of ideal suspension of the gui las burs don by eyiting the shocks in and allowing the weight of the body to rest on a flexible and elastic handlebar, while avoiding breakage. frame and forks on bad roads or down sidewalks, constituting the most efficient shock absorber.
The propellant springs 4-4 can be applied to the forward end of the propellant; in this case the springs will be fixed from the bottom at 2 to the support 2 of the fork Fig. 3 board 2, and from the top to the end of the forks 7-7 of the handlebar 1 which will be extended so as to exceed the axis 6 and the forks 7-7 instead of forming a fork, the two ends exceeding the axis 6 will form a semicircle when they meet (see Fig. 5 plate 2).
