<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

New device with variable visual elements ------------------------------------------- ------- automatic substitution, in particular for advertising or for ---------------------------------- --------------------------- signaling r'¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ - --------------
The present invention relates to a new device.
likely to be suitable for advertising, for signage or for other purposes, and the characteristic of which resides in the fact that it comprises on its visible surface a certain number of solid parts, as well as notches in which appear successively a large number of visual panels bearing texts, designs, advertising motifs or the like, illuminated or not, the substitution of these texts taking place automatically and according to predetermined laws, for example alternating with the appearance of drawings, texts or additional patterns, made visible by appropriate means on the fixed surfaces mentioned above.
The various elements such as the fixed surfaces and the grooves, are advantageous.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
grouped around a central element, which is, according to another characteristic of the invention, constituted by a clock whose hands move above the surfaces or notches surrounding its mechanism; the latter is either combined with, or preferably independent of the mechanism particular to the invention, which makes it possible to reveal in a sequence and at predetermined intervals, the opaque or transparent panels in the notches.
The device which is the subject of the present invention is moreover characterized by the use, in combination with the means indicated above, of a surface which is both transparent and reflective, such as the glasses known under the name of "Argus" glasses. , and by variable lighting devices making it possible to accentuate one or the other aspect of the apparatus, ie either the CLOCK function or the ADVERTISING DEVICE function.
The variable elements are controlled by means of a mechanism, for example a clockwork movement or an electric motor possibly independent of the mechanism of the clock itself, and by means of an intermittent-acting transmission.
According to a development of the invention, appropriate control means make it possible to modify, for example according to a periodic law, the sequence or the variation of the visual elements, for example so that at certain times the frequency of the variations is greater. to others, or again so that at certain judiciously chosen times of the day, the panels or surfaces appearing in the indentations or fixed surfaces, belong to a category different from that to which the panels belong or surfaces that the mechanism of the invention makes appear at other times as well

Fig. 9 is a front view of one of the illuminated sectors.
Fig. 10 is a sectional view along the X-X axis of FIG. 9, and

As shown in the drawings, the advertising device which is the subject of the invention is in the illustrated example constituted by a cylindrical housing 1 of relatively low height with regard to its diameter, and inside which the entire mechanism is contained. itself, the facade of which bears in its middle the clockwork movement 2 with its hands 3 and 4, as well as a sort of crosspiece with four branches 5, the function of which will be detailed below. Inside the housing is the drive motor .6 which, for example
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
by means of a transmission 7, causes the jerky rotation of the cliché-carrying discs 8 mounted on a common axis and illuminated from the rear by light sources 9.
The clichés mounted on the -8 cliché holders are made visible when they appear in the windows of the facade, by switching on lamps such as 9. A screen 10, made of transparent material, can, if necessary, be provided. to protect the plate holders and the interior of the mechanism from dust.
Apart from the actual clock, the operation of which is entirely independent of the publicity mechanism, and which can be driven by appropriate motors, with springs, electric or others, the device comprises a double winding whose an indirect one, is provided by lamps, tubular for example, arranged inside each of the branches of the spider as clearly indicated in figs. 9, 10 and 11. A second illumination, by transparency, is provided by the light sources 9, illuminating the images carried by the / discs 8, and which are located opposite the notches of the other three plate holders.
The facade has, as shown more particularly in fig. l, two series of subdivisions, one, the angular position of which is the same as that of the cross-pieces 5, the other, formed by the intervals between the aforementioned elements and which in all shown are four in number. The elements located in line with the branches of the cross and which will be designated hereinafter by the references A, B, C, D are therefore separated by the elements or cells a, b, c.d.
The elements A, B, 0 and D are advantageously made of transparent ice of the type called "Argus" glass, and are arranged so that when they are not illuminated.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The Surfaces form mirrors, while when the light source is switched on, the mirror effect gives way to advertising or other clichés affixed behind the surface of each of the elements A, B, C, D. The elements a, b, o and d, form notches through which the interior of the housing 1 can be seen (where appropriate through the glass or transparent screen 10), the assembly being arranged such that it is not There is never one and only one photograph in front of each borehole, in order to avoid making the light sources visible 9.
The attractive effect of the apparatus which is the subject of the invention is based essentially on the continuous multiplicity and variation of the patterns appearing in the windows a, b, c, d, this variation being obtained as indicated below.
Before describing the operation of the apparatus, we will first of all indicate the constitution of each of the plate holders 8; this constitution, which is the same for. the four discs up to the length of their support, emerges more particularly from Figures 3, 4 and 5. Each of the disc holders comprises a sleeve 11, of variable length, and the front end of which receives, in a collar 12, a number of radial arms.
These arms, very light and very strong, given that they must participate in the jerky rotation of the assembly, while allowing a sudden stop without any vibration, are also of sufficient rigidity to ensure that it is held in position. clichés arranged in the first two sectors of each third; the third sector is intended to remain empty to allow the vision of the plate-holder sector appearing at this time in the notches a, b, c and d.
As shown more particularly in FIG. 5, the branohes are therefore formed by a metal section 13, to which is fixed, by means of screws or rivets 14,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
a flat strip 15 forming a stay cable, and constituting with the edge of the profile 13 gutters or grooves in which engages the plate holder or plate 16.
The rear end of each of the sleeves 11 carries a fixed arm 17, the role of which will be detailed below.
The mechanism aotionnant the set of disc holders, which, in the whole shown, are four in number, and which bears the general reference 7, is shown in detail in Figs. 6 and 7.
This mechanism intended to ensure the jerky rotation of the discs and to allow their return movement at also determined intervals, is formed of a train of reduction gears 18, 19, 20, 21, the axes of which are mounted on a plate 22; the last pinion, that is to say the pinion 21 is integral with a cam 23 which actuates a lever 24, constantly returned by a spring 25 and causing, via a push rod 26, articulated at 27, the jerky rotation, in the direction of arrow 28, of the crown 29 integral with the axis 30.
The immobilization of the wheel 29 after each forward movement is ensured by a locking pawl 31 subjected to the action of a spring 32 and whose profile is such (see fig. 6) that it allows the rotation of the wheel 29 in the direction indicated by the arrow, but prevents it from rotating backwards thanks to the presence of the straight face 31 '.
As shown in figs. 7 and 8, the shaft 30 carries arms 31, 31a, 31b, 31c, arranged at judiciously chosen angles and offset in the direction of the length. The ends of these arms being intended to cooperate with the transverse heads of another group of arms 32. 32a, 32b, @ 32o respectively secured to the sleeves 33, 33a, 33b, 33c threaded into each other and able to rotate in the sleeves. bearings formed by the. 22 and 22 'plates.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The arms 32 are then, from the rotation of the shaft 30, driven on a path 'the length of which corresponds to a fraction of a circle equivalent to that which must cover the images or devices appearing in the windows of the facade. When the arm 31 has traversed a certain angle, the end of the arm 32 leaves the arm 30 and is suddenly returned to its initial position under the action of a return spring 34.
Given the distribution over the circumference of the arms 31 on the one hand, and of the arms 32 on the other hand, the plate holders mounted on the end flanges 35, 35a, 35b, 35o of the nested shafts 33, 33a, 33b, 33c perform a movement of partial rotation at the end of which the return springs 34 return them to their concealed position.
The mechanism as described therefore ensures, by cooperating with the plate-holder discs shown in FIGS. 3 to 5, and during its assembly in the housing as shown in FIG. 2, a continuous variation but according to a non-regular law, devices, stereotypes or transparent, appearing in windows a, b, c, d, in the front surface of the dial.
Given the offset of the images on the four successive disks 8, an extremely high rate of variation is obtained and hence a particularly interesting advertising effect.
This discontinuous variation of the clichés can be combined with variations, for example also discontinuous, of the lighting of the facade and / or of the elements A, B, C, D, as well as with variations of the coloring of this lighting. - indeed, so as to have a certain number, as large as possible, of parameters.
It is also evident that the speed of the engine, the distribution of the control pins 31 and of the shafts
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
boxes 33, the subdivision of the disks 8, the law of succession of the clichés 16 as well as the rate of subdivision of the facade also make it possible to influence the number of clichés, inscriptions, texts, etc. 'appear in the device.
The apparatus as described is, moreover, in no way limited to the embodiment shown and may undergo a certain number of modifications without departing from the spirit or the scope of the invention.
This is how this device can be simplified to include only one disc instead of several; the dimensions can be increased or decreased, for example, in order to thus constitute clocks or clocks showing designs, proverbs, sentences, or even cooking recipes.
The use of the same device can be envisaged for signaling, for example the signaling of crossroads, by using the conventional colors: yellow, red and green, and by placing, where appropriate, the succession of signals under the dependence of the 'clock itself, in order to match the density or frequency of traffic to the importance of the track commanded or at the time considered, for example, to replace the hand signaling with automatic signaling during the hours when the presence of a traffic attendant cannot be considered.
It should also be noted that the invention is in no way limited to the forms and device which have been given only by way of purely indicative examples, the materials used may also in each case be adapted to circumstances and needs.
Following a development, not shown, the clichés can be subdivided in, the transverse direction; one could also provide a shutter block allowing the
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
gements concealed, and rotating either continuously or intermittently, for example like clichés.
Finally, the invention could also be produced in the form of a casing of whatever diameter, divided into a certain number of regular or irregular sectors, each intended to receive one or more panels bearing advertising or other inscriptions. These panels are illuminated in successive series thanks to an automatically controlled contactor device of a type known per se. The device is in this case completed by a clockwork movement driving a hand located on one or more faces of the device.
Finally, the panels are, during their blackout periods, masked by a glass of the so-called "indiscreet glass" type which, when it is not illuminated from the rear, acts as a mirror.
