<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

PATENT OF INVENTION Device for velocipeds.
The subject of the invention is a device for velocipedes comprising a chain transmission for the transmission of the driving force from the pedal shaft to the rear wheel, this chain transmission comprising a front toothed wheel placed on the pedal shaft and a rear toothed wheel on the hub of the rear wheel, the two wheels and the chain being contained in a housing which replaces one of the branches of the rear fork.
The object of the invention is to allow such a shape of the chain casing for velocipeds of the aforementioned species, that said casing does not hinder the cyclist. This object is obtained according to the invention by arranging between the pedal shaft and the chain transmission in the same casing as the latter of a multiplier gear with a transmission ratio such as the front chain wheel and the rear chain wheel can be made with the same diameter. Of this
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
this avoids the usually relatively large diameter of the front chain wheel and the disadvantages that the large size of this wheel causes.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which FIG. 1 shows the chain transmission mounted in the housing in side view, while fig. 2 shows a section along a plane passing through the axis of the pedal shaft and the axis of the rear wheel, certain parts of the rear fork of the velocipede as well as of the rear wheel itself being likewise represented in this figure. Fig. 3 shows a velocipede fitted with a transmission device according to the invention in side view.
As shown in the drawing the transmission device consisting of a combination of a gear and a chain transmission is completely surrounded by a housing 1, which extends from the hub 2 of the rear wheel to the pedal mechanism, the said housing replacing one of the branches of the rear fork and being rigidly connected to the other branch 3 of this fork. The housing 1 also contains in its front part a gear set in action by the pedal shaft 4, this gear in turn actuating the front chain wheel 5 and by means of the chain 6 the rear chain wheel arranged at the rear end of the housing 1.
The speed multiplying effect of the transmission between the pedal shaft and the rear wheel is obtained by suitable choice of pinions in the gear, and the chain wheels can therefore be made with the same diameter. The gear can p. ex. be two-story as shown in fig. 2, the large pinion 9 actuated directly by the pedal shaft 8
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
being keyed thereon, and engaging with a smaller pinion 10, which is screwed onto the hub of another large diameter pinion 11 or attached thereto in any other suitable manner. Pinion 11 is p. ex. by means of ball bearings 13, 13 'carried so as to rotate freely on an intermediate shaft 12 fixed in the housing 1.
This pinion 11 engages with a small diameter pinion 14 fixedly connected to the front chain wheel 5 carried freely on the pedal shaft 8.
The connection between the pinion 14 and the chain wheel 5 can eg be made in such a way that the pinion is screwed onto the hub of the chain wheel, as shown in fig.
2. The chain wheel can be carried on the pedal shaft by means of ball bearings 15, 15 'and the pedal shaft can in turn be carried in the front part of the housing by ball bearings. 16, 16 '.
To allow inspection of the gear and chain drive the casing may be appropriately divided, eg along a plane perpendicular to the axis of the pedals and passing through the ring gears of the rear wheels. chain, so as to form a removable part 17 forming a cover, which by means of screws 18 can be fixed to the fixed interior part of the housing.
For the reinforcement of the housing 1, the latter is provided with a reinforcing beam 29 made in one piece with the housing, and extending from the intermediate shaft 12 of the gear to near the chain wheel rear 7. On the rear part of this beam is fixed by means of bolts 20, 20 'one of the branches of an angle connector 21, the other branch of which is fixed to one 22 of the support bars rear of the velocipede frame.
In the connector 22 is provided the usual groove for
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
fixing the axle 23 of the rear wheel.
Fig. 3 shows how the housing is adapted to the velocipede as a whole and for comparison the location of the usual front chain wheel in velocipedes of known construction has been indicated in dotted lines.
The embodiment shown in the drawing and described above for the sole purpose of clarifying the invention should, of course, be considered only as an exemplary embodiment thereof, certain details may of course be changed without going beyond the limits of the invention. framework of the invention.
