<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
sous la réaction du système élastique, oscille en sens inverse et dégage les vertus;
2 - L'ouverture des verrous dont il est question sous 1 s'effectue par oscillation autour de leur axe d'arti. culation, cette oscillation étant provoquée par un moteur électrique spécial, fonctionnant comme moteur pour ouvrir xx les verrous et comme électro-aimant pour les maintenir ou- verts pendant l'ouverture de la porte ;
3 - Un dispositif de freinage automatique régu- larise automatiquement l'effort des moteurs d'ouverture des verrous et freine ceux-ci lorsqu'ils retombent librement pour reprendre leur position de fermeture.;
4 - Un dispositif de sécurité assure automati- quement l'accrochage des verrous dès leur ouverture, afin d'empêcher que tout arrêt du courant électrique soitcause d'un trouble dans le fonctionnement ; cedispositif remplit automatiquement la même fonction dans la manoeuvre de secours dont il est question ci-dessus ;
5 - Des moyens purement mécaniques sont prévus
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
pour permettre, en cas de non fonctionnement des dispositifs électriques, la manoeuvre à la main des différents organes mobiles du dispositif;
6 - Un dispositif de sécurité électrique conju- gué avec un moyen de manoeuvre mécanique de secours à la main empêche la fermeture des verrous supérieurs, tant que les verrous inférieurs ne sont pas complètement fermés;
'10- La commande des divers mouvements du dis- positif (perte et verrous) est . réalisée par un seul ouvrier.. agissant sur un commutateur dans le cas de fonctionnement éleetrique de l'appareil, et sur les divers organes méca- niques de secours, dans le cas de fonctionnement à la main du dispositif;

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
La porte étant fermée et le diffuseur chargé étant mis sous xxxxxx pression, les brancards viennent s'appuyer auto- matiquement sur les verrous, ce mouvement leur étant permis par le fonctionnement du système élastique;
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>

"Device for elastic retention and automatic locking and unlocking of horizontally hinged doors such as diffuser doors"
The present invention relates to a device, applicable to horizontally hinged doors such as the upper and lower doors of diffusers, a device characterized by the combination of a system for resiliently keeping the doors closed, with means of automatically controlled locking, the elastic retention of the doors allowing, when they are closed and before opening, the free engagement or release of the bolts intended to support the hinge pin of the doors,
the efforts resulting from
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
pressures prevailing inside the diffuser (or any other device of the kind),
This result is achieved by the combination of the following means:
1 - The connection between the counterweight-maneuvering nut of the door and the door itself or the stretchers to which this door is integral, is not rigid, but made by means of an elastic resis system. - suitable tance, to balance without appreciable deformation, the weight of the materials contained in the apparatus, in such a way that, when the diffuser is put under pressure, the door can oscillate slightly xxx around its hinge axis to come lean on the locks and that, when the pressure in the appliance is removed, the door,
under the reaction of the elastic system, oscillates in the opposite direction and releases the virtues;
2 - The opening of the locks in question under 1 is carried out by oscillation around their axis of arti. culation, this oscillation being caused by a special electric motor, functioning as a motor to open xx the locks and as an electromagnet to keep them open during the opening of the door;
3 - An automatic braking device automatically regulates the force of the lock opening motors and brakes them when they drop freely to resume their closed position .;
4 - A safety device automatically ensures that the locks are hooked as soon as they are opened, in order to prevent any stopping of the electric current from causing a disturbance in the operation; this device automatically fulfills the same function in the emergency maneuver referred to above;
5 - Purely mechanical means are provided
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
to allow, in the event of non-operation of the electrical devices, the manual operation of the various movable members of the device;
6 - An electrical safety device combined with an emergency mechanical maneuvering means prevents the upper bolts from closing, as long as the lower bolts are not completely closed;
'10 - The control of the various movements of the device (loss and locks) is. carried out by a single worker, acting on a switch in the case of electric operation of the device, and on the various emergency mechanical parts, in the case of manual operation of the device;
On the attached drawing:

electric 2, can move longitudinally on the screw 3 and thus cause for the opening and closing of the port (oscillations of the latter around its axis 4 of articulation) is not rigid, but elastic , this elasticity being able to be obtained by any suitable means (springs, hydropneunatique shock absorbers, etc.) and being in the example shown in the appended drawing, produced by means of boxes fitted with "Belleville" washers. These boxes comprise frames 5 which are integral with the side members or stretchers 6,
rigidly connected to the door 7 preprement said; internally, the frame 5 is provided with slides 8, on which can move a slide 9 which forms a bearing for 1 axis 10 of articulation of the screw 3 with the stretchers 6.
The slide 10 is extended downwards by a rod 11 carrying a sleeve 12 between which and the lower part of the frame 5, a stack 13 of round "Belleville" is arranged; a nut 14, engaged on the threaded end of the rod 11, makes it possible to adjust the tension of the stack of washers as desired.
As soon as pressure is exerted on the door 7, it is immediately transmitted to the stretchers 6 which are integral with it and it tends to cause the assembly formed by the stretchers and by the door to oscillate around their axis 4. articulation, the sealing of the door remaining maintained despite its slight angular displacement, by a hydraulic seal 15 constituted by a circular tube of canvas-covered rubber and consequently elastic in which a hydraulic pressure of a higher value is constantly maintained to the pressure prevailing in the device.
The position of the nut 1 on the screw 3 is invariable as long as the said screw is not rotated by acting on the handwheel 16; consequently, the angular displacements of the stretchers 6 under the action of the pressure which prevails inside the diffuser cannot determine any displacement of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
shaft 10, but can however be effected by virtue of the presence of the elastic system constituted by the stacks 13 of "Belleville" washers. elastic system which flexes more or less according to the specific characteristics which have been given to it.
As soon as the pressure in the diffuser ceases, the door, under the action of the elastic system, oscillates in the opposite direction and returns to the place it originally occupied, the stack of "Belleville" washers relaxing and dreaming. - while also occupying its resting position; the power of the elastic system has been designed such that the load of the materials contained in the apparatus is not sufficient to cause a significant deflection of the washers.
Of course, each of the stretchers is provided with an elastic system, the forces to which the door is subjected being distributed over the two systems.
Z'amplitude of the angular displacements of the branches during the pressurization of the apparatus is limited by locks 17. These locks are two in number per door, each of them acting on one of the two. stretchers; they are made integral with one another by their articulation shaft 18 on which they are keyed, the said shaft rotating freely in the supports 19 rigidly connected to the lower part of the apparatus.
The function of the locks 17 is to prevent the door and the stretchers from being subjected to the overhanging pressure which they receive periodically and for a minimum of 80 minutes by coming xx into place under the spout 20 of the branches 6 to support at the same time as the axis 4 of articulation of the doors, the forces to which they are subjected.
In devices of this type which are currently known, so that the spreading of the bolts under the branches is easy, the doors are closed as much as possible and
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
leaves the stretchers to become resting on their bolts under the action of the pressure exerted on the door from the. setting the diffuser in battery, but it is understood that this lowering of the stretchers on their bolts, in the absence of any elastic connecting system, can only occur by the existence of clearances in the mechanism, by deformations of the door and the stretchers, by bending the screw 3 and the econ 1, etc. these deformations of the various components having the effect of rapidly causing the dislocation and wear of the various parts involved.
In other cases, the bolts are forced to lift the door by means of ramps which carry the so-called locks, ramps which forcefully slip under the slats of the bran cards, which also causes deformation of the organs.
To release the bolts, the means employed are also very defective, because, as soon as the pressure ceases inside the diffuser, the elasticity of the components, previously deformed, is not sufficient to balance the weight, which they support. again, materials contained in the diffuser, and we find ourselves in the need to overcome, in order to open the bolts, sometimes very great efforts which require, in certain cases, the use of real winches. When the bolts finally release from the stretchers, the post collapses very sharply and suddenly, which causes considerable wear, metal tearing and permanent deformation of the components involved.
The elastic system which has been described above eliminates all these drawbacks.
Indeed, the engagement of the locks under the slats 20 of the stretchers, is done very easily by letting them fall abruptly by their own weight, the door being closed, the slats of the stretchers can be at any desired height above their. bearing surface on the locks, this height

tor may for example be 10 millimeters greater than that which would be necessary for the free engagement of the two parts.
The assembly made up of the door fitted with its elastic system and the bolts, works as follows:
With the door closed and the loaded diffuser being placed under pressure xxxxxx, the stretchers come to rest automatically on the bolts, this movement being enabled by the operation of the elastic system;
When the pressure inside the diffuser is released, the door is raised under the reaction of the elastic system and the bolts are released. Opening the bolts is then easy since they are completely free from the stretchers which have returned to their initial position with the support above their bearing surface on the bolts.
When the locks are released from the spouts of the branches, the door can be opened by ordinary means.
The opening of the locks 20 and their maintenance in this position during the opening time of the losses can be controlled either by means of an electric motor of a special type, or by hand.
In the case of electrical control, - the device established in accordance with the invention is as follows the application of an electromagnet for this maneuver being to be rejected because of the too large dimensions that should be given to such a device for to overcome the forces involved, for this maneuver, and in accordance with the invention, a special motor 21 called torque motor is applied, said motor being constructed in such a way that it can produce a starting force. powerful that can be limited at will and that can be slowed down to avoid any brutality in the action of the said motor which, xx of the first rotational movement performed, is maintained
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
energized to keep the locks open for the time required to open the door,
or from 20 to 30 seconds for example.
To obtain this result, the motor 21, which is wound in a special way, is mounted on the diffuser by the intermediary of a metal bracket 22; on its axis is mounted a toothed pinion 23 which is engaged with a toothed wheel 24 of larger diameter and on which is fixed a crank button 25 eccentric with respect to the axis of rotation of the wheel 24.
The toothed wheel 24 has several holes arranged on spokes of different size, so as to allow the stroke of the rod to be varied and to control the crank 25.
On the button 25 is mounted the head 26 of a connecting rod 27, the length of which can be adjusted by acting on a threaded lantern 28 with reverse pitch and the foot of which is constituted by a yoke 29 having a long mortise 30.
The yoke 29 is placed astride a lever 31 which carries a counterweight 32, and which is secured to the axis 18 of rotation of the bolts 17. On the lever 31 and on either side of said lever, are arranged axle ends 33 which can slide freely in the mortise 30.
The stroke of the bolts 17 is limited by stops 34 and 35 which are integral with the diffuser body to which they are fixed by support pieces 36.
When it is desired to open the diffuser door after removing the pressure which prevailed inside the appliance and consequently the stretchers are slightly raised above the bolts, the motor 21 is switched on. powered by a switch or "controller" placed on the battery service gateway.
The torque motor starts, and drives the toothed wheel 24, as well as the crank button 25, the angular displacement of which causes a
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
substantially longitudinal displacement of the connecting rod 27 which, via the axis 33, acts on the lever 31 which moves angularly by driving the axis 18 of rotation of the bolts in the direction of opening until that said locks come to meet the stops 34 which limit their movement in the direction of opening.
When the bolts have reached this position, the connecting rod 27 can no longer move and consequently the rotation of the motor can no longer continue, this rotation having been around 120. but the motor remains energized and functions alon like a real electromagnet to keep the locks open as long as this is necessary, that is to say for the duration of the opening of the door. As soon as the current is cut to the motor, under the action of the weight of the bolts, of the counterweight 32 and of the weight of the linkage, the head 26 of the connecting rod 27 returns the crank button 25 to the bottom dead center, and by the same intermediate members the two bolts come to rest on their closing stops.
When the door is closed, as soon as the openings 20 of the stretchers, moving angularly, come up against the ramp 37 of the bolts, they push these backwards, the said bolts being able to oscillate freely as well as the lever. 31 and the counterweight 32 of which they are integral, then that the axis 33 can go up freely in the mortise 30 of the yoke 29 without transmitting any movement to the connecting rod 27 and to the crank button 25. When the door 7 is completely closed , the slats 20 of the stretchers being at a height greater than that of their bearing surface. on the locks, the latter fall back to occupy their closed position and are in place to receive the support of the stretchers when the door will be subjected the internal pressure of the diffuser.
It is easy to see that the control of this 'motor coupler' can be synchronized with any device that opens the door this maneuver.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
@ vre is done by hand or whether hydraulic or electric, the energizing of the 'torque motor' can thus become absolutely automatic. The power of the 'torque motor' can be variable, for example it could be 1.000 Kgs centimeters.
The effort thus provided for the opening of the virtues is much greater than that which would be necessary, but this excess of power makes it possible to insert on this control device: an adjustable brake or "dash-pot" 38, which is represented. - shown on a larger scale in FIG. - ,, 4 of the appended drawing, and whose function is to slow down the instantaneous starting force, so as to avoid any shock, and to make the movements of the bolts slow and of uniform speed, the so-called "dash-pot" being moreover organized in such a way that it allows the locks to return to their initial position only by their own weight and also without shock at the end of the stroke
The "dash-pot" 38 (fig.
4) consists of a cast iron cylinder 39, in which a piston 40 can move; the cylinder is closed by a cover 41 through which the rod 42 of the piston passes, the sealing of this rod being ensured by a stuffing box 43. The piston 40 which will preferably be made of bronze is pierced with suitably calibrated holes 44 and the cylinder being filled with consistent grease or other suitable semi-fluid material, movement is slowed by the effort required to pass the consistent grease from one side of the piston to the other.
To adjust the action of the "dash-pot" this member is provided with an external adjustment device 45; this device comprises a rotary yoke which is integral longitddinalement with a finger 46 which is placed in a groove 47 formed in the wall of the piston 40; by acting on the hat 45 of
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
so as to insert the finger 46 more or less into the groove 47, this additional passage which is given to the consistent grease is modified to go from one face of the piston to the other; the sensitivity of the device can thus be exquisitely adjusted for a given braking material and for a temperature also given at the place of use. A cable gland 48 seals the dpigt 46.
The piston rod 42 is connected, by an articulated binocular 49, to a cam 50 which is keyed on the axis 18 of rotation of the bolts and which, consequently, oscillates at the same time as the said bolts.
When the piston 40 moves in the cylinder 39, in one direction or the other, these movements and therefore these braking actions are transmitted to the cam 50 and therefore to the latches. The opening of the bolts 17 can also be controlled by hand by means of a pull tab 51, terminated above the service runner by a handle 52. The pull tab 51 is articulated at 53 on the end of the lever 31. ; the opening of the locks is then done by exerting an upward pull on the handle 52 until the locks 17 come to meet their opening stops 34.
In the case where the opening of the locks is thus controlled by hand, or when this device is added as a backup to hydraulic or electrical control means, a mechanical device shown on a large scale in FIG. 5 of the appended drawing, makes it possible to fix the pull tab 51 in the position corresponding to the opening of the locks and release said pull tab at any time chosen.
This device comprises a body 54, made of cast iron for example, in which is drilled a recess 55 cylin-
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
drric; in this recess moves a piston 56 on which a spring 57 acts and which ends on the outside with a spout 58. The piston 56 carries two journals 59 arranged on either side and which protrude outside the body 54. The journals 59 are engaged between the branches of a fork 60 which can be made to oscillate around a fixed axis 61 when acting on a pedal 62, integral with said fork. On the other hand, the pull tab 51 carries a chin 63 welded to it, the height of the lower shoulder of this chin being suitably calculated so that, when the chin rests on the spout 58, the latches are open.
When this device is attached to an automatic lock control system or when the opening is done by hand, the chin 63 going upwards, comes to be placed above the spout 58 which, pushed by the spring 57 comes up. to engage under the chin; the pull tab 51 is then immobilized in the position which corresponds to the opening of the bolts and the latter can only resume their closed position when, by acting on the pedal 62, the piston 56 is brought back to the rear. and that consequently the chin 63 is released.
This device, the application of which is especially necessary during the maneuver by hand can be put out of action permanently by means of a pin 64 immobilizing the pedal in its position which corresponds to maintaining the spout behind. 58 of the piston.
We see that the provision of this organ has the effect above all of limiting the maneuver by hand to the instantaneous effort that must be provided for opening the bolts, which allows the worker not to be concerned. maintenance
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
of the zipper and to be able to take care of other maneuvers, since the locks remain suspended. When the pull-tabs are operated automatically, the application of this device is not useful, but it can nevertheless be kept as a means of safety in the event of power failure, when, for example, the control is electric. .
The lock opening control system can be supplemented by an electrical contact determining the activation of a warning light or a bell, or any other warning device intended to warn the worker when the locks fail. are not completely closed.
More simply, the pull tab 51 can be painted in two very visible colors (white and red, for example) superimposed and at a height such that the pull tab emerging from the service floor can only show one of its two colors, when the locks are fully closed.
Finally, the automatic door locking system can be synchronized with any type of control for opening and closing said doors, and it can include security, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, etc. luminous means. sound or sound preventing the complete closure of the upper doors, that is to say the pressurization of the devices if the closing and locking of the lower doors are not completely and rigorously carried out, these safety means thus avoiding all incidents or accidents and protecting the equipment against any deterioration.
it is understood that the embodiment of the invention which has just been described and which is shown in the appended drawing was cited only by way of example, that the invention could be applied. devices other than diffusers and that the various organs which allow the application

cation of the invention may be of a different nature from those which have been described and which are shown in the appended drawing without the economy of the invention being affected.
