" B3BI'3aTIUNx3à±dNTS AUX MCANISMS Dt9V.,19CPdL'TT DE rA.BdC rJ FRA.GMJ5NTS POUR LA CONSTITUTION DES POUPEES DE CIGARES ".
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
L'arbre
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
devancement.
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

"B3BI'3aTIUNx3à ± dNTS AUX MCANISMS Dt9V., 19CPdL'TT DE rA.BdC rJ FRA.GMJ5NTS FOR THE CONSTITUTION OF CIGAR DOLLS".
The present invention relates to the tabao advancement mechanisms for cigar-making machines, and in particular to the advancement mechanisms intended to advance tabao in fragments, although the invention is also applicable to the advancement of tabao in long sheets. intended to constitute the guts of cigars.
Machines for making cigar dolls using fragmented tabao usually fail to arrange the large and long fragments lengthwise in the cigar doll, which is one of the reasons why the oigars with the gill formed long leaves smoke
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
frequently better than cigars whose guts are made from ragments of tobacco.
Consequently, the object of the invention is an advancement mechanism by means of which the large elongated fragments of tobacco have their largest dimension placed longitudinally in the doll itself, which thus makes it possible to obtain dolls formed from fragments. tobacco which more closely resembles cigars whose guts consist of long tobacco leaves in terms of draw and ease with which cigars are smoked. To this end, the invention aims to arrange the fragments longitudinally with respect to a stream of tobacco as it is advanced, to form charges with the aid of this stream of tobacco and to bring these charges into the loop of the apron for rolling the dolls, without disturbing the longitudinal arrangement of the tobacco fragments.
Some machines for forming cigar dolls using tobacco fragments have succeeded in arranging these fragments longitudinally or in parallel during a phase of the advancing operation. This longitudinal arrangement of tobacco fragments was destroyed as a result of the tobacco falling into a duct leading to the loop of the apron for rolling the cigar dolls.
Consequently, the object of the invention is to prevent this longitudinal arrangement of the fragments of tabao obtained during a phase of the advancing operation from being destroyed during a subsequent phase of said operation and during the. transport of the tabao. To this end, the invention relates to a movable measuring chamber which moves away from the tobacco stream (in which the load which is to constitute a cigar doll is detached) with the load in the loop.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the apron for rolling the dolls, thus eliminating any drop or spillage of tobacco fragments.
The amount of tabao in a given length of the tabao stream depends on the height of the latter, and, in practice, it is difficult to prevent the height of this tabao stream from varying considerably through its port at its total height. Also, holes or parts of lower density may exist in the tobacco stream which makes the load too light and produces soft parts in the cigar.
The invention also aims to eliminate these causes of defective formation of cigar dolls, and, for this purpose, a stream of tobacco is cut into uniform lengths, they are arranged side by side in the form of a column, and the charges are cut in this column. In order to give the column a uniform density, one end of the latter is subjected to intermittent pressure. The invention consists, for this purpose, in detaching from a column of uniform density a predetermined volume of tabao, which ensures the uniformity of the quantity of tabao included in successive dolls.
A further subject of the invention is an improved method of forming cigar dolls, making it possible to obtain cigars of superior quality, the doll of which is formed from fragments of tobacco.
To this end, the invention consists of certain constructions and combinations of members which will be described in detail below.
This advancement mechanism can also be used to obtain cigar dolls whose guts are
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
formed of long tobacco leaves. In this case, the oscillating hopper and the S-shaped scrapers described below are not necessary, since an operator places the long tobacco leaves on the belt by hand. feed in a uniform direction and thickness.
In the attached drawing:
Fig. 1 is a sectional plan, partly broken away, of the improved mechanism for arranging the fragments of tabao.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view, partly broken away, of a cigar doll forming machine composed of fragments of tobacco and constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 3 is a sectional end view showing how a certain volume of tabao is transported from the conveyor belt to the vertical tobacco column, and how a load for a doll from said column is deposited. on the apron to roll the dolls
Fig. 4 is an end view in section showing in a different position certain members shown in FIG. 3.
In the implementation of the invention, there is provided, in a cigar-making machine comprising an apron for rolling the dolls, a mechanism for forming a column of tobacco in fragments, the elongated fragments extending in one direction, that is to say parallel to each other, as well as means for separating from said column loads which are to constitute dolls and for bringing these loads into a loop of the apron for rolling the dolls, the relative positions of the dolls. said fragments not being disturbed and these fragmenta extending longitudinally to the load, in order to produce cigars whose tripe is formed of tobacco in fragments and smokes better.
In the preferred construction, the separating means comprises a movable metering chamber for resetting.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Observe the load near the tobacco column and provided with a mechanism to bring the chamber in a loop of the apron to roll the pbupées without dropping or spilling the tabao.
Preferably, the column forming mechanism comprises means for advancing the fragmented tobacco in the form of a narrow stream, and this mechanism comprises means for cutting uniform lengths from said tobacco stream. and place them side by side. Further, in the preferred construction, the column has a vertical component, and there is provided a tamper mechanism exerting, intermittently, elastic pressure on the upper end of said column. This tamping device also acts to transport or push the cut lengths of tobacco from the cutting position to the tobacco column.
The construction of the various means mentioned can be modified within wide limits without departing from the scope of the invention, since the particular device chosen to describe the invention constitutes only one of the numerous possible embodiments of the invention. the latter. The invention is therefore not limited to the precise details described and represented here.
Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, it can be seen that the improved advancement mechanism comprises an oscillating tobacco hopper or magazine 10, which is movable about an axis extending longitudinally with respect to an advancement band. endless 12, and periodically receives an upward oscillating movement using a connecting rod 11 actuated by the main control of the machine, in order to distribute the tabao T on the endless advancement belt 12 , which is actuated intermittently by a roller 13, mounted on a shaft 14 and passing over an idle roller 15 mounted on a shaft 16.
The tree
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
14 carries a chain wheel 17 actuated, by means of a chain 18, by a chain wheel 19 carried by a shaft 20, on which is mounted a ratchet wheel 21 actuated by a pawl 22 pivoting on an arm 23 mounted idle on the shaft 20. The arm 23 receives an oscillating movement forward and backward from a connecting rod 24 actuated by an adjustable crank pin 25, by which the advance is modified according to the conditions to be satisfied.
This crank pin 25 is carried by a disc 26 mounted on a shaft 27, which is actuated in the direction of the arrow shown in FIG. 2, by the main machine control.
The upper surface of the endless belt 12 constitutes the movable bottom of a fixed advancement duct consisting of side walls 28 and 29 having slits 30, in which are mounted shafts 31 carrying rotary scrapers 32. S-shaped which serve to dispose the elongated tobacco fragments longitudinally with respect to the tobacco stream and also to flatten the latter. All the shafts 31 are actuated in the same direction by the main machine control, by means of a chain wheel 33 and a gear train 34 enclosed in a housing 35 removably mounted on the side wall 29 by means of consoles 36.
This housing 35 is removably mounted in the event that the improved mechanism is used to advance long tobacco leaves intended for. constitute the guts of cigars; in this case also, the oscillating hopper will have to be detached and the long tobacco leaves will be placed by hand on the endless advancement belt 12.
After the tabao T has been subjected to the action of the S-shaped scrapers 32, the load passes under a roller 37, the knurled periphery of which fills the entire width of the duct.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
advance. The roller 37 is mounted on a shaft 38, which is supported by the walls 28 and 29 of said conduit and is actuated, by means of a chain wheel 39, by the main control of the machine, in the direction of the arrow shown in fig. 2.
Near the anterior end of the endless advancement belt 12, a fixed naroi 40 is adjustably fixed to the support frame of the conduit moves, and, when the belt 12 is stopped, two knives 41, placed approximately at a distance equal to the length of a cigar in front of said wall 40 and actuated, by means of levers 42, by the control shaft of the machine, cut into the layer of tobacco placed on the endless belt 12 of the sections of the desired length. It will be noted that the dimensions of the sections are constant and do not vary as when a similar wall is used as a measuring device to regulate the advance.
A plunger 43, moving transversely with respect to the endless advancement belt 12, pushes each section thus cut on an oscillating drum 44 (fig. 3) provided with a pallet 45 which oscillates the section to bring it, without disturbing the arrangement of the tobacco fragments, in a fixed vertical chamber 46, so as to thus form a vertical column of tobacco which is pressed by the action of gravity.
The drum 44 is mounted on a shaft 47, which carries a gear wheel 48 actuated by a toothed sector 49 mounted on an arm 50 rotatable on an axis 51, From the hub of the arm 50 extends a rod 52 carrying an adjustable weight 53.
The arm 50 has a pin 54 engaging in a slot formed in a rod 55 articulated to a lever 56 actuated by
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
the main control of the machine, as will be described later. The lever 56 is adjusted so that, in its rest position, the pallet 45 of the drum 44 is just below the edge of the endless conveyor belt 12, so that the drum 44 can pick up the tobacco section. T which is brought there by the plunger 43. After the tobacco section has been placed on the drum 44, the lever 56 moves upwards, thus releasing the spindle 54, so that the toothed sector 49, at the way of. weight 53, then rotates the drum 44 forward and thus brings the tobacco section into the chamber 46.
The weight 53 is used to ensure a uniform density of the tobacco, this weight maintaining the pallet 45, with constant pressure, on the tobacco column T placed in the chamber 46, during the dispensing of each tobacco section (fig. 4), the pallet thus constituting an elastically aotionned packing element.
When a section of tabao is introduced into the chamber 46, the latter communicated with a transport chamber comprising side walls 57 and end walls 58, under the bottom of which the apron 59 for rolling the dolls is arranged. This apron 59 is moved vertically by 6U rods which slide in supports 61 carried by the frame of the machine, the height of the chamber 57-58 being such that it maintains a load 12 which is just sufficient and having the correct dimensions to form a cigar doll. This load is detached from the column located in the chamber 46 using a knife 62 (fig.4) moving transversely at the end of the chamber 46, while the basket 45 is in the packing position.
The charge T in chamber 57-58 is then brought into a position.

interior tion in which the apron 59 forms a loop
59, so that the winding pin 63, when moving in the direction of the arrow, will wind the apron around the load T and roll the latter in a sheet or undercoat placed in a suitable position on the load. rolling table 64, thereby forming a cigar doll. The bottom of the transport chamber 57-58 consists of a plate
65 which supports and brings the apron 59 into position below the chamber; this plate 65 can be provided with guides so that its movement takes place without vaoillage.
The side walls 57 of said chamber are pivoted on axes 66 and are provided, at one end, with fingers 67 which, during the downward movement of the chamber, engage with stop pins 68, thus opening the said side walls 57 and releasing the tobacco load Tt. In the upper position of the transport chamber, the side walls 57 are held in the closed position by stop screws 69, which can be suitably supported in a fixed position on the machine frame, these parts. then coinciding with the side walls of chamber 46 and forming an extension of the column.
After the transport chamber placed in its lowest position has released the load of tabao T. these walls 57 and 58 are immediately raised and brought against the chamber 46, so that the load T placed on the apron 59 can be subjected to the action of the winding pin 63.
When the latter returns to its starting position, the plate 65 moves upwards to close the chamber, dragging the apron 59 with it. While chamber 58 is Open at its base during headstock rolling,

which coincides with the return movement of the drum 44, the knife 62 constitutes the bottom of the chamber 46, this knife being moved away from this position after the plate 65 has been moved upwards and when a new section of tobacco is transferred to room 46.
It will be noted that the tobacco is only released from the measuring chamber when it is in the loop of the apron 59 and rests on it, so that the tobacco does not run the risk of falling and that the fragmenta de tabao are not disturbed by their longitudinal and parallel position in the load, and, consequently, in the doll and in the cigar.
The bodies described above are actuated in synchronism by connecting and control elements, including those shown schematically in fig. 2 and 3 are examples. The plunger 43 is moved by a shaft 78 which is suitably actuated in synchronism with the camshaft 100 and with the shaft 27, by means of all connecting and control elements, by the main control of the valve. machine which also actuates the luu and 27 shafts. The shaft 78 carries a cam 77 actuating, by means of a roller 76, the short arm 75 of a lever 72 which, by means of a connecting rod 71, prints the desired reciprocating motion to the plunger 43 to transfer the tobacco sections.
The lever 72 is mounted on a pivot 73 supported in any suitable manner relative to the frame of the machine, and is urged against the cam by a spring 74.
In order to operate the knives 41 in the manner described, the levers 42 are suitably pivotally mounted at 84, and a connecting rod 82, articulated to the levers by means of a pin 83 carried by the connecting rod and engaging. in slots made in

each of the levers receives an alternating movement of a lever
79, pivoting at 73 and engaging at 80 with a cam 81 wedged on shaft 78.
The lever 56 controlling the operation of the drum 44 is mounted on the shaft 87 and carries a roller 86 engaging with a cam 85 carried by the shaft 78.
The knife 62 receives an alternating movement, at the desired time, of a cam 94 mounted on the shaft 87, using a plunger 90 to which the knife is fixed and which moves in a guide 91 secured to the frame. machine or otherwise fixed in a fixed position, the plunger being connected, by a pin 89 engaging in a slot, to an arm 88 of an elbow lever 92 engaging at 93 with the cam 94 .
The measuring chamber is actuated by the shaft 100, by means of a transverse part 95 fixed to the rods 60. This transverse part is connected, by a slot and pin connecting device, to a lever 96 mounted. on a shaft 98 carried by the frame of the machine, and this lever engages in 97 with an oame 99 offset on the shaft 100.
The plate 65 is controlled by a cam 104 mounted on the shaft 100 and aotionnant at 103 a lever 102 mounted on the shaft 98. The other end of this lever 102 is connected by a slot and pin connecting device, to a butt 101 comprising uprights 105 supporting the plate 65 and preferably guided by any suitable means (not shown).
In view of the above, a detailed description of the operation of this mechanism is considered unnecessary and is therefore omitted for the sake of brevity.
