Dispositif d'embrayage automatique.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Automatic clutch device.
The present invention relates to an automatic clutch device, in particular for automobile transmissions of the type in which the clutch is placed after the gearbox, as described in Belgian patent n. 381 039, of which the present applicant is a co-inventors. With this type of transmission it is possible to have a clutch that works automatically without any control by pedal or lever of any kind.
The automatic clutch device according to the present invention consists in that the shaft to be driven is mounted in the extension of the drive shaft, in this case the shaft coming from the gearbox, and on which is mounted by helical thread a plate having a mass such that, by the rotation of the motor shaft, the inertia of said plate forces it to move axially and to come to rest against a plate ending said plate. driven shaft, such that the friction between the two said plates produces the clutch and the coupling of the two shafts.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
To obtain an automatic clutch in reverse as well as forward, the driven shaft is integral with two plates between which is the movable plate on the motor shaft; according to the direction of rotation of the latter, said movable plate moves axially in one direction or the other, to be applied against one or the other of said fixed plates integral with the shaft. .
Special means may be provided to obtain sufficient friction between the movable plate and the plates integral with the driven shaft, as well as bitter devices.
In this automatic clutch device, the disengagement likewise takes place automatically, producing a stop or a sufficient reduction in the engine force; under these conditions it is 1 "driven shaft which becomes a motor, by producing on said movable plate a force which tends to unscrew it in whatever way and imparts to it an axial displacement separating the two plates originally in contact and producing the die. - clutch.
One embodiment of the automatic clutch and release device according to the invention has been shown by way of non-limiting example to the single figure of the appended drawing, which is an axial sectional view of the device.
In this drawing 1 designates the motor shaft, 2 the shaft to be driven. These two shafts are mounted along a common axis, in the immediate extension of one another. In the preferred case envisaged, which is that of a transmission according to the aforementioned patent, the shaft 1 is the secondary shaft of the gearbox, the shaft 2 controlling the differential.
The shaft 1 comprises a helical path, or square screw thread 3 on which is guided a circular plate 4 having a certain mass or inertia. The plate 4 is enclosed in an envelope consisting of a plate 5 fixed to the end of the shaft 2, in the plane perpendicular to the end of

the shaft 1, of diameter equal to or greater than that of the plate 4, by a cylindrical wall 6 integral with the plate 5, and by a second driven plate 5 ', integral with the wall 6 and concen- trate to the shaft 1. A ball bearing 7 can be provided between the plate 5 'and the shaft 1.
The two faces of the plate 4 as well as the opposite sides of the plates 5 and 5 'must be flat but made of a material ensuring drive by friction between the respective faces.
The faces of the plates 5.5 ′ may however comprise housings 8 for friction and damping blocks 9 with a flat surface and which project slightly on the surface of the plates 5, 5 ′. These blocks 9 are mounted on springs 10 in the housings 8 and are held by a nut 11 on the rod 12 of the block passing through the bottom of the housing 8.
The central part of the plates 5, 5 ′ comprises a recess 13 for receiving the hub 14 of the plate 4. Optionally, these housings may include damping springs.
With this device, the engagement and disengagement take place automatically as follows: initially the device is in the position shown; the gears of the gearbox are engaged which sets the shaft 1 in rotation; the plate 4 by its inertia, and on the well greased thread 3, tends to stay behind and moves axially until it comes to apply, for example against the plate 5 for forward travel, against the plate 5 'for reverse gear; the blocks 9 act as shock absorbers and increase friction; the drive of shaft 2 takes place.
For automatic disengagement, the shaft 1 slows down; therefore it is the shaft 3 which becomes the motor for the device and the plate 5 or 5 'in contact produces on the plate 4 a torque which returns it approximately in the position shown.
