<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

(fig.
paroi in=
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

There are improvements made to "volumes' liable to be subjected to aero or hydrodynamic effects, in particular to the wings of airplanes".
The invention relates to "volumes" susceptible to being subjected to aero or hydrodynamic effects; and 'it relates more particularly (because it is in their case that its application seems to offer the most interest), but not exclusively, among these "volumes", the wings of airplanes.
It aims, above all, to make these "volumes" such that they can behave differently from the point of view of. aero or hydrodynamic effects to which they are likely to be subjected and that, in particular, if these "volumes" are airplane wings, the coefficient of lift of these can be made variable by an action aerodynamics on the general flow of air around these wings.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It mainly consists in constituting the "volumes" of the type in question in such a way that, for some of their elements at least, the zone bordering the anterior part of the upper surface of said elements can be connected to the zone. adjoining the posterior part of this same upper surface by at least one passage made in the interior of said "volumes" themselves.
It consists, apart from this main provision, of certain other provisions, which are preferably used at the same time and which will be discussed more explicitly below.
It relates more particularly to a certain mode of application, as well as certain embodiments, of said provisions; and it relates more particularly still, and this as new industrial products, to the "volumes" of the kind in question involving application of these same provisions, the special elements specific to their establishment, as well as the installations, fixed or mobile, in particular airplanes, comprising similar "volumes".
And it can, in any event, be well understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the accompanying drawings, which supplement and drawings are, of course, given mainly by way of indication.
Fig. 1 of these drawings shows a diagram showing the shape of the curves representative of the depressions (on the upper surface) and of the pressures (on the lower surface) at the various points of an airplane wing for a determined incidence.
Figs. 2 and 3 show, in section along their profile, two airplane wings constructed in accordance with two embodiments of the invention.
Figs. 4 and 5, finally, show, in partial section, according to their profile, two wings also comprising an application of the invention.

We know that when an ordinary airplane wing moves in the air, the distribution of the dynamic pressures around this wing, for a given angle of incidence, in normal use, is made of a such that the air passing from upstream to downstream of said wing is subjected in the vicinity of the lower surface of the latter to overpressures and in the vicinity of the upper surface thereof to de- pressures.
These depressions generally have a maximum in a place on the upper surface located a little behind the leading edge, so that, if we follow the flow of air in the vicinity of the upper surface from the leading edge to the trailing edge, approximately three contiguous zones can be delimited, defined as follows:
the zone of increasing depressions (zone I, fig. 1), the zone of maximum depressions (zone II) and the zone of decreasing depressions (zone III). , for a given wing, the extent of these aones, as well as their position in relation to the upper surface, is a function of the angle of incidence and the examination of the distribution of dynamic pressures, around the wing. a wing shows that with the increase in the angle of incidence, the place of the upper surface where the depressions present their maximum moves, in general, towards the leading edge, which leads increasing the extent of the area of decreasing depressions and shifting the area of maximum depressions towards the leading edge at the expense of the area of increasing depressions.
for angles of incidence close to the "critical" angle of incidence, angle at which the coefficient of lift of the wing reaches its maximum, this zone of increasing depressures is almost nonexistent (dotted curve fig. . 1) and the zone of maximum depressions is located in the immediate vicinity of the leading edge followed immediately by
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
ment by the area of decreasing depressions.
Experience shows that it is in this zone of decreasing depressions that the phenomenon of "detachment" of the air streams occurs and it has been observed that the coefficient of lift of a wing for a given angle of incidence can be made variable, in particular be increased, by partially or totally eliminating this separation of the air streams.
1! The invention makes it possible to obtain such a result very simply.
According to the invention, and more especially according to that of its modes of application, as well as those of its embodiments of its various parts, to which it seems that preference should be given, proposing to - Establishing an airplane wing is done as follows, or in a similar fashion, whether it is a wing with a constant profile or a wing with a variable profile.
We establish the structure of the wing. and its coating in any suitable manner and so as to achieve the desired profile.
And we connect, for all or part of said wing, the zone of decreasing depressions (zone II, fig. 1), either to the zone of maximum depressions, or to the zone of increasing depressions, or, finally, both to . zones of the maximum depressions and of the increasing depressions, this union being carried out by one or more air passage channels b which are provided in the thickness of the wing itself.
Each of said channels is arranged in such a way that they terminate on either side by at least one end opening onto the upper surface of the wing at the appropriate places by at least one opening, said openings preferably being arranged with. such that, by
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
their shape and their arrangement., they do not influence, or influence only a little, the general flow of the air around the wing.
Those of the ends of the b-channels which are on the side of the areas are given increasing or maximum depressions. that we will call. hereinafter outlets have any shape and arrangement, however they are preferably arranged so that they are analogous to the upper part of the anterior slits of the. existing wings called "slotted wings" therefore in such a way that the channel b opens onto the front part of the extra. back, in a direction inclined from bottom to top and front to back, so to speak tangentially to the surface of the upper surface, the anterior edge d of the orifice c possibly projecting slightly from the theoretical contour of the profile .
We give those. ends of. channels b which are located on the side of the areas of decreasing depressions, ends which will be referred to hereinafter as inlet orifices of any form and arrangement, advantageously a form of nozzle ensuring good air flow.
In any case, the assembly is arranged in such a way in each particular case, as in particular for the angles of incidence. of normal use and at large angles, a partial flow of air is established through the channels b, flow directed in the direction of the advance of the wing in:
air and such that, being superposed on the general flow of air around said wing, it has the effect of reducing or eliminating the separation of the air streams, which has the consequence of modifying increase (in fact an increase) of the coefficient of lift of the wing at an angle
Optionally and if it is desired that the action of the air flow in the channels-11 can be suppressed or modified, for example -in flight,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
this, for example also, in order to increase the efficiency of the warping members,
or to reduce the drag coefficient of the wing for moderate angles of incidence corresponding to high speed flight, or the orifices c and e are placed in places such that, for moderate angles of incidence, the values of the depressions which prevail in these places are approximately the same so that, for these angles of incidence, the partial flow of air through the channels b will not tend to occur or will be relatively weak whether it is directed from the rear to the front or.
vice versa, and so that, for the angles of incidence exceeding a certain value, the displacement towards the leading edge of the zone where the depressions are maximum bringing an increase sow depressions on the orifices ± and a decrease in depressions on the orifices e, the air circulation in the channels h will be established automatically from the rear to the front with all the more intensity as the incidence increases, an arrangement which will be easy to achieve by experiment and calculations, either the said channels b are provided with a closure device such that it can be actuated, or automatically for at least one of its opening and closing maneuvers,
advantageously by a device sensitive to the angle of attack or to the pressures or depressions prevailing in the vicinity of certain points of the wing, for example at the location of the air passage openings themselves, or by an appropriate command, at the will of the e-. equipping the airplane, for at least one of these same maneuvers, either automatically under certain conditions and for certain maneuvers, and by appropriate command
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
also requested in some. conditions and for certain maneuvering,
Said shutter device is formed for each channel b, either by a single shutter, or else by separate shutters, preferably arranged.
respectively at each of the ends of said channel, in which case the said shutters are also preferably arranged in such a way that, in their closed position, they substantially re-establish the continuity of the surface of the upper surface, of the wing interrupted by the presence of orifices c and!,.
In the case where a single shutter is used, and where it is desired that its operation be automatic, said shutter is preferably constituted by one. shutter! (fig. 4) suitable for covering under the action of the difference in the pressures exerted on its two faces and which, when open, are forced into a suitable housing in the wall of the duct b.
In the event that shutters are used. separate for the orifices c and e (fig. 5) and where it is desired that their operation be automatic, the shutter of the orifice ± is preferably constituted by a kind of shutter g such that, closed, its outer wall connects with the rest of the upper surface ,, and ,. when open, its inner wall is connected with the inner wall of said duct, the edge d then projecting slightly on the profile of the upper surface, and the shutter of the orifice e is formed by a kind of shutter. such as, @ closed, one of its. ! walls, h1 for example, are connected with -the rest of the upper surface, and, green, la. same wall h1 is connected with the.
wall in =
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
third of the duct b, the shutter then being erased in a suitable housing in the wall of said duct; optionally, the aforementioned flaps g and h are subjected to the action of an elastic system i acting in one direction or the other depending on the case, and, finally, possibly also, the flaps ± and h are positively connected so that their openings and closures are combined, for example by a wheelhouse.
In this case also the automaticity of the operation can be ensured simply by the play of the difference of the depressions exerted on the external faces of the closing flaps.
Another way of obtaining automatic operation of the b-channel obturator system consists in combining the movement of these obturators with that of a relatively small pilot wing k.
The arrangement of this pilot wing relative to the main wing can be arbitrary, but advantageously such that the aerodynamic interaction between the pilot wing and the main wing increases the efficiency of the entire system, and therefore the lift coefficient of the wing for a given in, and the constitution and the control of this pilot wing can, advantageously also, be analogous to that of the front flap of the front slotted wings, or to that of the pilot wing Pilot wing wings arranged in "tandem" in front of the main wing.
Thus, according to an advantageous arrangement, the pilot wing k is mounted so as to pivot about an axis arranged in front of and below the leading edge of the wing a (fig.
4) said pilot wing is arranged in such a way that, as is known, it occupies, or else the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 4 (case of large angles of incidence), or the position shown in dotted lines (case of small angles) and we connect so
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
such, for example by a system of levers and rods, said wing k k aveo a shutter f similar to that described above, that the shutter is open when the pilot wing occupies its raised position and vice- versa,
If one wishes can pass in flight.
From automatic to controlled operation, advantageously, in the control linkage, a device similar to that used in controlling the shutters of the slotted wings, for example a device such as that shown in FIG. 4 and according to which. the control wheelhouse 1 attacks a horn m fixed at 11 * axis of said flap f, by a. elongated eye n such that the flap f having for example been closed by an action on the linkage 1, it can open under the action of the aerodynamic effects alone without causing the control linkage.
It is of course also possible to combine the device forming the subject of the invention with all other devices already known capable of acting with it and having recourse, for the control of the assembly, to all systems. control also already known and capable, for example, of allowing to act will in an identical way or in a different way on lea devices comprised by the two half-wings of the same wing.
As it goes without saying, and as it emerges moreover from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of duplication, nor to those of the embodiments of its various parties, to which it appears that preference should be given; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants thereof, in particular those in which the 2'invention would be applied to. aircraft control surfaces for example.
