<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
<Desc/Clms Page number 17>

Sealing device for an instrumentation column passing through the cover of a nuclear reactor vessel
The invention relates to a sealing device for an instrumentation column and in particular for a thermocouple column passing through the cover of a pressurized water nuclear reactor vessel.
In pressurized water nuclear reactors, the vessel enclosing the reactor core has a cover of substantially hemispherical shape having openings in which are fixed adapters allowing the passage of the reactor control rods and instrumentation columns such as cylindrical thermocouple columns; in each of the thermocouple columns, a set of thermocouples is arranged making it possible to measure the temperature of the cooling fluid at the outlet of a set of assemblies of the reactor core.
Each of the adapters comprises a protruding part under the cover ensuring the guiding of the thermocouple column and a protruding part above the cover comprising means for connecting a tubular support assembly of the thermocouple column which can be fixed in the extension of the adapter.
Inside the support assembly fixed to the adapter are arranged sealed support means intended to cooperate with a surface of the thermocouple column, to ensure the sealed passage of the thermocouple column in the bore of the support assembly extending the adapter in the axial direction.
The thermocouple column which crosses the bore of the support assembly and the bore of the adapter located in the axial extension of one another has a projecting end relative to the support assembly which is engaged with a traction lifting device for moving the thermocouple column in the axial direction. It is thus possible to bring into contact, with a certain pressure, the bearing surface of the column of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
thermocouples and the sealed support means of the support assembly.
The sealed support means of the thermocouple column inside the support assembly are generally constituted by a support surface of frustoconical shape machined in the internal bore of the support assembly whose shape is complementary to the shape of the support surface of the thermocouple column and by a seal which is compressed between the support surfaces of the thermocouple column and the support assembly when tightening is carried out by applying a pull on the upper end of the thermocouple column.
A drawback of such a sealing device is that it requires an axial displacement of a certain amplitude of the thermocouple column between its low loosened position and its high tight tightening position, this axial displacement distance being defined so intangible, by the position of the support surface inside the support assembly, relative to the position of the support surface of the thermocouple column in the released position.
After a certain period of use in the nuclear reactor or after a certain number of operations of opening the vessel by removing the cover, certain columns of thermocouples may be slightly deformed, so that they are no longer perfectly straight .
In this case, it may be difficult or even impossible to ensure the axial displacement of the thermocouple column inside the adapter and the support assembly, over a sufficient distance to ensure the tightening of the gasket. sealing.
It is then necessary to completely change the thermocouple column, which results in
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
significant additional costs in operating the nuclear reactor.
Up to now, there has been no known device for sealing an instrumentation column such as a thermocouple column passing through the cover of the vessel of a nuclear reactor making it possible to ensure the tight tightening of the column, even in the case where it has undergone deformations preventing axial movement inside the adapter, sufficient to allow the seals to be crushed.
In FR-A-2. 642. 217, a sealing device has been described for an instrumentation column passing through the vessel cover of a nuclear reactor in which the support assembly consists of two successive sections which are assembled in such a way that the instrumentation column can be removed quickly and easily, even in the case of seizure of the clamping and clamping parts of the support assembly on the end of the adapter.
However, in this improved device, no means have been provided which make it possible to reduce, if necessary, the axial displacement necessary to ensure the tight clamping of the instrumentation column.
The object of the invention is therefore to propose a sealing device for an instrumentation column and in particular for a column of thermocouples passing through the cover of a pressurized water nuclear reactor vessel, inside of a tubular adapter fixed in a through opening of the cover and projecting towards the outside of the tank cover, comprising a tubular support assembly fixed at the end of the adapter outside the cover and in its axial extension as well as '' a means of traction on one end of the projecting instrumentation column outside the support assembly, allowing the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
displacement of the instrumentation column in the axial direction of the adapter,
to bring a support surface of the instrumentation column into contact with sealed support means arranged inside the support assembly, this device being able to seal the instrumentation column even if this instrumentation column has a deformation limiting the axial displacement of the instrumentation column inside the adapter and the support assembly.
For this purpose, the sealed support means of the instrumentation column include: - an annular stop having a contact surface whose shape is complementary to the shape of the support surface of the thermocouple column mounted movably in the axial direction, inside the bore of the support assembly, so that its contact surface is opposite the support surface of the instrumentation column inside the support assembly, and - at least one annular seal interposed between a face of the stop opposite its contact surface and an internal surface of the support assembly, so as to ensure the seal between the external surface of the instrumentation column and the bore of the support assembly, by cooperation of the annular stop,
of the seal and of the internal surface of the support assembly, under the effect of an axial direction force exerted by the instrumentation column coming into contact with the annular stop, during its movement under the effect of a traction exerted on its end.
In order to clearly understand the invention, a description will now be given, by way of nonlimiting example, with reference to the appended figures, an embodiment of a sealing device according to the invention and a variant of realization of this device.

In Figure 1, we see a part of a tank cover 1 of a pressurized water nuclear reactor crossed by an opening 2 in which is sealingly fixed by welding, an adapter 3 comprising
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
a projecting part below the tank cover ensuring the guiding of a column of thermocouples 5 and a projecting part above the tank cover 1 constituting a opening 4 on the outside surface of which a thread 4a is machined.
On the upper part 4 of the adapter 3 is fixed in the axial extension of the adapter 3, a fixing and sealing assembly 6 of the thermocouple column 5, via a lower part 7 comprising a threaded bore which is engaged on the threaded part 4a of the opening 4 of the adapter 3. This assures the assembly of the fixing and sealing assembly of the thermocouple column 5 at the end of the adapter 3. The opening 4 of the adapter 3 and the lower part 7 of the fixing and sealing assembly 6 comprise circular seals 4 ′, 7 ′ which come into coincidence when the part 7 is fully screwed onto the development 4.
Joints 4 ′ and 7 ′ are connected by welding, so as to seal the screw connection between parts 4 and 7.
The cover and the bushing adapters 3 are produced in the factory and transported to the site where the installation of the nuclear reactor is carried out.
The fastening and sealing devices 6 of the thermocouple columns 5 are attached and fixed to the upper ends of the adapters on the site of the reactor.
The lower part of the fixing and sealing assembly 6 is fixed to the end of the adapter, so that it can be dismantled if necessary by melting the junction area of the seals 4 ′ and 7 ′. This disassembly is only carried out for exceptional repairs or interventions on the crossing of the thermocouple column.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The fixing and sealing assembly 6 comprises an upper part 8 which is tightly assembled to the lower part 7 with the interposition of a metal seal 10 of special shape, the parts 7 and 8 of the fixing assembly and sealing being assembled by means of a clamping flange 12 in two parts which can be connected together and tightened by means of screws introduced into openings 13 passing through opposite ears situated at the end of the two parts in form of sectors.
The clamping flange has at its internal part frustoconical bearing surfaces coming into clamping contact with corresponding frustoconical bearing surfaces machined on openings of ends 7a and 8a of the lower part 7 and of the upper part 8 respectively of the fixing assembly and sealing 6.
The adapter 3 and the fixing and sealing assembly 6 are formed in tubular form and arranged in the axial extension of one another, so as to provide a passage for the thermocouple column 5 constituted by a tube for supporting and holding a set of thermocouples 15.
The upper part 8 of the fixing assembly 6 of the thermocouple column constitutes the first tubular section of the support assembly 9 of the sealing device according to the invention. The support assembly 9 of the thermocouple column 5 comprises a second section 11 of annular shape attached to the first section and fixed in the manner which will be described later. The first tubular section 8 and the second annular section 11 of the support assembly 9 have bores which are arranged in the axial extension of one another and in the axial extension of the bore of the adapter 3 .
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
The thermocouple column 5 has an upper part whose diameter is less than the diameter of its current part separated from this current part by a shoulder of substantially frustoconical shape constituting the bearing surface 14 of the thermocouple column 5 inside the support assembly 9.
Sealed support means 16 engaged inside the bore of the tubular section 8 of the support assembly 9 come into contact with the support surface 14 of the thermocouple column 5 in its clamping position.
The displacement of the thermocouple column 5 between its loosened position and its clamping position is ensured by a plate 17 traversed by tapped openings and provided with traction screws 18 engaged in the tapped openings and coming to rest by their ends on the second section ring 11 of the support assembly 9.
The plate 17 has a central opening allowing its engagement on the end part of the instrumentation column 5.
A traction ring 19 whose outside diameter is greater than the diameter of the central opening of the plate 17 and consisting of two half-rings engaged in a groove formed in the peripheral part of the thermocouple column in its upper part makes it possible to transmit the 'tensile force exerted by the plate 17 to the thermocouple column 5.
Reference is now made to FIGS. 2 to 6 to describe the sealing device according to the invention comprising the support assembly 9, the sealed support means 16 of the thermocouple column 5 and the traction plate 17.
The first tubular section 8 of the support assembly 9 is hollowed out on its lateral surface to
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
constitute three recesses 20a, 20b and 20c arranged at 1200 from one another around the axis of the tubular section 8.
The annular section 11 of the support assembly 9 having the shape of a disc is fixed to the tubular lower section 8 by means of three screws 21 to 1200 and engaged in openings placed in coincidence and crossing the second section annular 11 and the upper part of the tubular section 8, to each lead into one of the recesses 20a, 20b and 20c.
Inside each of the recesses is placed a fixing piece 22 comprising a threaded opening into which the threaded end of the corresponding screw 21 is screwed.
The fasteners 22 have a cylindrical rear surface which comes to bear against the cylindrical surface of the corresponding recess 20a, 20b or 20c.
The tightening and assembly of the second annular section 11 on the first tubular section 8 is carried out between the heads of the screws 21 bearing on the annular section 11 and the connecting pieces 22 coming to bear against the upper surface of the recess corresponding 20a, 20b or 20c.
The heads of the screws 21 are arranged inside a cylindrical cup 23 whose base is immobilized on the upper surface of the annular section 11.
The heads of the screws 21 have recesses in which the metal of the cup 23 is pushed back, so as to block the rotation of the screws 21 after assembly and tightening of the sections 8 and 11 of the support assembly 9 against each other.
Fixing the annular section 11 on the tubular section 8 using the screws 21 and the parts
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
tightening 22 engaged in the recesses 20a, 20b and 20c allows the disassembly of the two parts of the support assembly 9, for example to access the sealed support means 16, as will be explained later, in all cases, even if the threaded part of the screws 21 is seized inside the fixing pieces 22.
Indeed, it is possible to machine the pieces 22 from the outside, so as to cut these pieces and the end of the screw 21 inside the corresponding recess to extract from the recess, the piece of fixing in which the screw is seized.
When reassembling, simply replace the screw 21 and the corresponding fixing part 22.
This mounting principle is identical to the mounting principle of the support assembly described in FR-A-2,642. 217.
The traction plate 17 which is visible in particular in FIG. 3 comprises three lifting and traction screws 18 placed at 120 around the axis of the traction plate 17 and each engaged in a tapped opening passing through the plate 17.
At each of the screws 18, the plate 17 carries a cup 24 whose base is immobilized on a fixing plate 25.
When the plate 17 is in the high clamping position, as shown in FIG. 6, the screw heads 18 are engaged in the cups 24.
The screw heads have recesses in which part of the metal of the cups 24 can be pushed back to ensure the locking of the screws 18, in the high tight tightening position of the thermocouple column 5.
The cups 23 of the screws 21 and the cups 24 of the screws 18 have a square dovetail base which engages radially in the annular section 11 and the
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
plate 17, respectively, inside a correspondingly shaped recess, so that these supports can be turned a quarter of a turn to possibly reuse the cups after having carried out a loosening and disassembly operation of the thermocouple column support assembly.
The end of the screws 18 is supported inside the housings machined on the upper surface of the upper annular section 11 of the support assembly 9.
The traction plate 17 comprises, to the right of each of the heads of the screws 21, an opening 26 enabling the engagement of the plate 17 on the screw heads 21 around the cups 23, in the low position of the traction plate corresponding to the loose position of the thermocouple column 5, as shown in FIG. 5.
The fixing pieces 22 have a groove 22a on their front face to facilitate cutting of the screw, so as to release the screwed assembly in the event of seizing.
As can be seen in FIGS. 5.5A and 6, the sealed support means 16 of the thermocouple column 5 inside the support assembly 9 are engaged in the upper part of the bore of the section tubular 8 of the support assembly 9 and comprise an annular stop 28 the lower part 28a of which constitutes a support ring for the thermocouple column 5 and a seal 29 consisting of several seals arranged on either side other of the annular stop 28 and interposed between the support ring 28a and a part of the lower surface of the annular section 11 of the support assembly 9.
The lower surface of the support ring 28a of the annular stop 28 has a frustoconical shape corresponding to the shape of the frustoconical support surface 14
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
pic of the thermocouple column 5. These surfaces are facing each other, so that they can come into contact when the thermocouple column 5 is raised by pulling on its end part, to pass from the loose position shown in Figure 5 in the clamping position shown in Figure 6.
The annular stop 28 comprises in addition to the lower support ring 28a, a cylindrical part 28b engaged in an annular opening 30 of the section 11 of the support assembly 9, the annular opening 30 opening onto the lower surface of the section ring finger 11.
The portion 28b of cylindrical shape of the annular stopper 28 guides the annular stopper which is slidably mounted in the axial direction inside the bore of the support assembly 9, around the column of thermocouples 5 .
The seal 29 consists of seals which can be deformed by compression between the surface of the support ring 28a opposite the surface coming into contact with the thermocouple column and the lower surface of the annular section 11 of the assembly. support 9.
When the seals of the seal 16 are compressed, they undergo a radial expansion, so as to ensure a tight junction between the inner and outer surfaces of the cylindrical part 28b of the annular stop and the outer surface of the column thermocouples 5 and the bore of the tubular part 8, respectively.
The lining 29 comprises two superimposed seals placed inside the cylindrical part 28 of the annular stop and two superimposed seals arranged in contact with the external surface of the cylindrical part 28b of the annular stop 28.
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
In addition, the seal 29 includes two flat metallic annular washers 32 superimposed on the seals and intended to come to seal around the thermocouple column, against the lower surface of the annular section 11.
In the case of a thermocouple column having a certain deformation limiting its movements in the axial direction inside the adapter and of the support assembly for the crossing of the corresponding cover, it is possible to equip the crossing of sealed support means 16 to ensure a very good seal of the thermocouple column despite a reduced possibility of movement in the axial direction.
It is easily understood that by increasing the axial height of the support ring 28a of the annular stop 28, between its face in contact with the seals of the seal 16 and its contact surface with the thermocouple column , the stroke of the thermocouple column 5 is reduced, necessary to compress the seals ensuring perfect sealing of the thermocouple column, as shown in FIG. 6.
In an initial phase, the possible displacement of the thermocouple column 5 is measured by means of the traction plate 17, in the axial direction, in order to deduce therefrom the characteristics of the annular stop 28 making it possible to obtain an effective tightening of the joints. of the seal 29, in the highest position that the thermocouple column 5 can reach by lifting the plate 17.
The screws 21 for assembling the two sections of the support assembly 9 are removed.
In the case where a screw 21 is seized in the corresponding fixing part 22, the part 22 is machined
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
and the screw, so as to extract its lower part from the corresponding recess and to carry out the disassembly.
The sealed support means 16 comprising the annular stop 28, the dimensions of which have been defined beforehand, are placed in the bore of the tubular section 8 and the annular section 11 is reassembled in a position superimposed on the tubular section 8.
The end of the cylindrical part 28b of the annular stop 28 engages in the annular cavity 30 of the section 11.
Screwing and blocking of the screws 21 is carried out, then lifting of the traction plate 17 by screwing the screws 18.
The thermocouple column 5 comes into contact via its support surface 14 with the lower surface of the support ring 28a. The column of thermocouples 5 on which the plate 17 exerts a traction drives in the axial direction and upwards the annular stop 28 which realizes, at the end of travel of the column of thermocouples 5, the tightening of the seals of the seal which are compressed in the axial direction.
The seals placed inside and outside the cylindrical part 28b of the annular stop 28 undergo crushing and radial expansion, so that they make it possible to obtain a tight junction on the one hand between the internal surface of the cylindrical portion 28b and the outer surface of the thermocouple column 5 and on the other hand between the outer surface of the cylindrical portion 28b and the bore of the tubular section 8.
The washers 32 trapped between the seals and the lower surface of the annular section 11 seal between the two sections of the support assembly 9.
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
When the thermocouple column is in its high tight tightening position shown in FIG. 6, the screws 18 are locked by pushing back part of the metal of the cups 24 in the recesses of the screw heads 18.
The device according to the invention therefore makes it possible to obtain effective clamping of the thermocouple column, even in the case where the possibilities of displacement of the thermocouple column in the axial direction are limited.
The three screws on the lifting plate can be tightened simultaneously using a tool applying the same torque to the three screws. The tightening tool can also be used for tightening the assembly screws of the two sections of the support assembly 9.
FIGS. 7 and 8 show an alternative embodiment of the sealed support means for the thermocouple column 5 inside the support assembly 9.
The corresponding elements in FIGS. 7 and 8 on the one hand and 5 and 6 on the other hand bear the same references, however, assigned the sign '(prime) with regard to the elements represented in Figures 7 and 8.
The sealed support means generally designated by the reference 16 ′ include an annular abutment 28 ′ slidingly mounted in the axial direction inside the bore of the tubular section 8 ′ and a seal 29 ′ of shape. annular and of the type known as Helicoflex.
Such a flexible seal comprises an annular central flat part and two O-shaped flanges each constituted by a rolled edge into which is introduced a helical spring for expanding the section of the torus. The external toric flange is engaged in an annular groove
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
at the end of the tubular section 8 ′ and the internal rim comes into contact with the external surface of the thermocouple column 5 ′.
The annular abutment 28 ′ has a recess 28 ′ c in the form of a torus portion intended to come into contact with the internal O-ring edge of the seal 29 ′ in the clamping position of the thermocouple column shown in FIG. 8.
The tubular stop 28 ′ also comprises openings 28 ′ allowing the engagement of a tool to ensure its extraction from the bore of the tubular section 8 ′, in the case where the cover of the reactor vessel is opened.
When the thermocouple column 5 ′ passes from its loosened position shown in FIG. 7 to its clamping position shown in FIG. 8, the annular stop 28 ′, the dimension of which has been determined to achieve the tight clamping of the thermocouple column is driven in the axial direction and upwards by the thermocouple column, so as to come into contact by its O-ring 28 'c with the internal edge of the seal 29'.
In the clamping position of the thermocouple column shown in FIG. 8, the O-ring 28 'c of the tubular stop 28' makes the sealed application of the internal O-ring part 29 'against the thermocouple column 5' .
The external O-ring part of the seal 29 is engaged and held in a sealed manner inside the groove of the tubular section 8 ′ by the annular section 11 ′.
A perfectly sealed support of the thermocouple column 5 ′ is thus produced by means of the annular stop 28 ′.
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
In the case where the thermocouple column 5 ′ has a limited latitude of movement in the axial direction, for example due to its deformation, it is still possible to achieve tight tightening, by mounting it in the assembly of support 9 ′, with an annular stop 28 ′ of dimensions adapted to the possible amplitude of the displacement of the column of thermocouples 5 ′.
We can therefore achieve in all cases, using the device according to the invention, a perfect seal of the thermocouple column in its clamping position.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments which have been described.
Thus one can imagine the use of annular stops and seals having a shape different from those which have been described.
One can also use the sealing device according to the invention in the case of a crossing comprising a support assembly of the thermocouple column whose shape and structure are different from those which have been described.
In particular, the support assembly may consist of two successive sections attached to one another and assembled in a manner different from that which has been described.
For example, instead of fasteners engaged in recesses separated from each other along the periphery of the tubular section, one can use fasteners consisting of two half-rings engaged in an annular groove machined along the entire periphery of the tubular section.
This embodiment described in FR-A-2,642. 217 and the embodiment described in the pre-
<Desc / Clms Page number 18>
Patent applications are indeed entirely equivalent and allow similar advantages to be obtained.
Although the use of a support assembly consisting of two sections fixed one on the other in a removable manner is of particular interest in the case of the present invention, in order to replace an annular stop with an annular stop of different dimensions, it is possible to also consider the application of the sealing device according to the invention in the case of bushings comprising a support assembly of the thermocouple column in one piece.
Finally, the sealing device according to the invention can be applied to the case of any instrumentation column passing through the vessel cover of a nuclear reactor.
