"Procédé de préparation de polymères de lactones fonctionnels,
<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>

- M représente un métal choisi dans le groupe comprenant l'aluminium, le zinc, l'étain, le cadmium, le germanium, le silicium et le titane;
- Alk représente un radical alkyle, linéaire ou ramifié, substitué ou non, de 1 à 18 atomes de carbone;
- O-R(Y)n-Xm représente une fonction alcoolate;
- d représente la valence de M;
- p est plus petit ou égal à d et représente le nombre de fonctions alcoolate liées à M; <EMI ID=7.1> totalement ou partiellement hydrocarboné, comportant au moins un groupe fonctionnel monovalent non protique ou protique X; <EMI ID=8.1> organique partiellement hydrocarboné, comportant au moins un groupe fonctionnel bivalent Y; <EMI ID=9.1> tiellement hydrocarboné, comportant au moins un groupe fonctionnel monovalent non protique ou protique X et au moins un groupe fonctionnel bivalent Y;

initiated using various catalysts. However, the examples of "living" polymerization, that is to say free of transfer and termination reactions and allowing any control of the molecular masses, are very limited. The ionic polymerization of lactone ring opening, as initiated for example by lithian alkyls or alkaline alcoholates is accompanied by secondary transesterification reactions entering into competition with the growth of linear polyester chains. Depolymerization by intramolecular transesterification leads to the formation of cyclic oligomers, while intermolecular transesterification generally gives rise to
to polyesters of uncontrolled and highly polydispersed molecular weight.
However, in 1962, it was shown that certain Lewis acids, such as triethylaluminum, in the presence or absence of water, initiate the polymerization of lactones. Since then, various aluminum alcoholates grouping together bimetallic p-oxo-alcoholates,
<EMI ID = 4.1>
that the (porphinato) aluminum alcoholates constitute the only catalysts making it possible to polymerize in a living manner and therefore
<EMI ID = 5.1>
the polymerization of E-caprolactone by opening its cycle at the level of the acyl-oxygen bond according to a so-called "coordination-insertion" mechanism, which is repeated step by step ensuring the polymerization of the monomers (in solution). Acid hydrolysis of the propagation sites systematically shows a hydroxyl group at one end of the polyester. However, apart from a few derivatives of these catalysts, which are of extremely complex structure and difficult to synthesize and which require very long reaction times (several days), probably originating from the bulk of the catalytic site, none of them is described as making it possible to selectively functionalize all of the ends of the polyester chain and possibly to introduce a function within it.
Now, the advantage presented by such selectively functionalized polyesters is known, whether it is the preparation of macromonomers for the development of grafted copolymers with polylactone grafts, or the synthesis of polycondensable di-, tri- or multifunctional polyesters into copolymers (multi) sequenced or in three-dimensional networks.
One of the essential characteristics of the present invention consists in a process for the preparation of functionalized lactone polymers overcoming the aforementioned drawbacks, making it possible to combine both the living nature of the polymerization, the selective functionalization of the non-hydroxylated chain ends in the processes conventional, modification of the hydroxyl chain ends and, in some cases, the insertion of an additional functional group within the macromolecule.
The present invention therefore relates to the preparation of polymers of lactones selectively functionalized at each of their chain ends. The polylactones thus obtained are perfectly controlled both in terms of molecular weight and the reactive nature of the chain ends. Polylactone chains carry either a hydroxyl function at one end and a non-hydroxyl function at the other, or a non-hydroxyl function at each of their chain ends, or a hydroxyl function at each of their ends. In the latter case, the chains can be linear, with or without a reactive function within the macromolecule, or they can be with three branches or more.
According to the invention, the lactone to be polymerized is reacted functionally, selectively with a polymerization initiator of the formula:

The method according to the invention consists in making use, to selectively functionalize the chain ends of the lactone and, in certain cases, to introduce an additional functional group therein, and this in a single step, d '' a polymerization initiator of the general formula:

According to the invention, the monomer-initiator molar ratio is generally between 10 and 1000. It preferably varies between 10 and 500 moles of monomer per mole of initiator.

The lactone used in the implementation of the process of the invention can be chosen from all those which are capable of being polymerized in the presence of catalysts with a metal alcoholate function. Usually the lactone monomer contains 3 to
12 carbon atoms per molecule and a cycle of 4,6,7 or 8 members. Lactone comprising a 5-membered cycle is very stable and therefore is not a good candidate for reactions involving

This can be copolymerized with any other unsaturated comonomer with the formation of a graft copolymer. The asymmetric difunctional polyesters can, moreover, be coupled either at the level of the metal alcoholate end of the

(CI-C (O) -CI). Aromatic diisocyanates, such as phenylene-1,4 diisocyanate and aromatic acid dichlorides, such as terephthalic acid chloride, are preferably used as coupling reagents at the metal or hydroxylated alcoholate ends of the synthesized polyesters. The solvents generally used are tetrahydrofuran (THF) or N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMA), the temperature possibly varying between 50 and 100 [deg.] C.
Under completely anhydrous conditions and by careful control of the OR / NCO or OR / C (O) Cl stoichiometry (R = H, MAlk.), Symmetrical telechelic polylactones can be prepared with a yield greater than 95%.

As already stated, in comparison with the other lactone polymerization catalysts, proceeding by a "coordination-insertion" mechanism, the initiators of the present invention have the advantage of not requiring a long preparation and tedious. They make it possible, in a single step, to polymerize the lactones in a controlled manner and to selectively and quantitatively functionalize the ends and possibly the very center of the polyester chains.
It should be understood that the present invention is in no way. limited to the above embodiments and that many modifications can be made without departing from the scope of this patent.
