.9 6 Invention Title: MIXER LID FOR TINT BOXES ON PAINT-MIXING MACHINES 5* 0 5 0 @5 @5 S 0
S.
The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us MIXER LID FOR TINT BOXES ON PAINT-MIXING MACHINES The present invention relates to mixer lids for tint boxes fitted to paint-mixing machines, and in particular of the type comprising at its base a flexible peripheral closing seal intended to be applied clamped and imperviously to the corresponding upper opening edge of the tint boxes, which can be adapted to various boxes of existing tints and with improvement of the closing on their edge.
It is well known that tint boxes are provided with an upper peripheral opening rim which cooperates in closing with the closing lid of the box and whose rim cross-section S profile is variable, in a classic U-shape in the form of an inverted V.
The known mixer lids of the type having a flexible closing seal on the underlying box permit closing only on the upper peripheral crimping facet of the opening rim of the box.
However, this application to the crimping edge facet of the box opening rim can only prevent paint from being introduced inside the cavity of the rim, for instance during tipping of the box during the paint pouring movement by the lid and contaminating the paint S contained in the box by formation of mixtures during drying.
The aim of the invention is to rectify this drawback and proposes a mixer lid for tint boxes on paint-mixing machines, of the type comprising at its base a flexible peripheral seal intended to be applied to the external peripheral edge of the annular rim delimiting the opening of the box, as the mixer lid on the box is closed, characterised in that said seal comprises a section of the anterior annular body attached to said base of the lid and intended to be applied during closing and imperviously to said peripheral edge of the box, and a flexible internal annular lip integral with said section of the anterior body, coaxial to the body section and intended to be applied on closing to the internal edge of the annular rim opening of the box.
Because of this arrangement, when the lid closes on the box the flexible lip is applied to the internal edge of the opening rim of the box by conforming to its profile and thus constitutes a second closing sealing zone as a complement to the first sealing zone constituted by application of said body section to the peripheral edge of the box, thus preventing the paint from reaching the inside of the rim cavity during manoeuvring of the mixer lid with the tint box.
.i 2 According to advantageous characteristics of the invention the flexible lip is formed monobloc with said anterior body section of the seal, moulded with the latter in a flexible synthetic material resistant to paint solvents.
This flexible lip has a profile of regular cross-section tapering towards the inside and is directed downwards in a natural position in accordance with a slope angle relative to the plane of the seal, slightly greater than the maximum slope line between the peripheral and internal edges of the rim of the existing tint boxes. This angle may be of the order of 300.
It is also mobile angularly with elastic return to the natural position, thus adapting to oooo the different profiles of the box rims to arrive at maximum substantially at the horizontal, so. while still being applied to the internal edge of the opening rim of the box. In addition, this lip has a radial length slightly greater than the greatest existing radial length between the
SO
S00... upper external edge and the internal edge of the opening rim of the boxes and around S mm, for example. Due to this arrangement the lid according to the present invention can be adapted in closing to all currently available paint boxes.
The anterior section of the seal is preferably attached elastically, by latching in a corresponding recess formed at the base of the lid.
The latter comprises a peripheral external vertical skirt projecting downwards relative 0 to the seal for centring of closing of the lid on the box. This arrangement enables quick 00 *00 mounting of the seal and manoeuvring of the lid on the tint box.
The invention is illustrated hereinafter by way of an embodiment and with reference to the accompanying diagram, in which: O 00 The sole figure is a view in partial section of a lid according to the present invention applied in closing to a tint box, shown only at the level of its base or edge on the rim of the box in terms of the circular symmetry, respectively on two opening rims shown in solid and dashed lines, delimiting the two opening rim end shapes of the tint boxes.
The figure shows a partial radial section of lid 1 according to the present invention, taken at the level of its closing edge 3, applied respectively to a paint box 5 comprising an opening rim 7 having a U-shape shown in solid lines and an inverted V-shape 7' shown in dashed lines. The assembly comprises a symmetry of rotation with respect to the median axis of the lid (or of the box). The mixer lid is conventional and comprises a body 9 having a general cap shape open towards the bottom and provided with an incorporated pouring 3 spout and a funnel having an axial passage of a mixer axis, not illustrated here. At a minimal distance from its peripheral circular edge 3 and on its base it comprises an annular gasket 11 with which it can be mounted closed imperviously on the opening of underlying paint box 5. The latter comprises at its opening, as mentioned above, an internal annular rim 7 of variable shape, according to design, which can be in a classic U-shape (shown in solid lines) or may be designed as an inverted V (dashed lines). This metallic rim is solid with the wall of box 5 by an annular upper peripheral crimping rim 13 and also comprises an internal end edge 15 rounded towards the top whose fold ridge is turned towards the 0#00 bottom in the vertical direction.
The seal is made of a synthetic elastomer material resistant to solvents, of the S";-thermoplastic type injected under pressure. Polysulfone compounds are suitable for this purpose. In cross-section the seal comprises a thick anterior body section 17 and a tapered, downwards directed rear lip 19; the whole is formed in annular shape with symmetry with respect to the median axis. Anterior body section 17 has a cross-section of a general square shape and lip 19 is triangular with a section having an external point 21. This lip is solid S with body section 17 by way of its rear face 23 with slight surface unhooking at the lower 000 S: level and a shoulder 25 at the upper level. The seal is attached to the base of the lid by its body section which is engaged elastically by latching in a corresponding recess 27 formed therein. Seal 11, pressed into its recess 27, engages automatically by means of internal retaining teeth 29 formed on the internal wall of peripheral vertical edging skirt 31 of the S. lid and with the support of an annular rib 33 opposite the retaining teeth and formed inside the lid, and abutting shoulder 25. Teeth 29 have a triangular shape with points facing upwards and inwards enabling them to be plugged into body section 17, which, by means of an annular groove 35 having a cross-section corresponding to the teeth, takes up the latter and is then engaged. It is furthermore noted that moulding of the lid in a plastic material necessitates provision of upper ejection elements for disengaging from the mould of the lid due to the internal teeth (for mould release); once these components are removed they uncover an empty section 37 closed off by body section of the seal.
These teeth 29 of minimal width, 3 to 4 mm, are disposed at regular intervals over the periphery of the lid, for example in accordance with an angle of 30 to 400, and engage substantially in the middle of anterior face 39 of body section 17.
It is unnecessary for lower face 41 of the body section to be of significant width, since the position of currently available crimping edge 13 of the opening rim of the boxes varies little in size. This appears in the diagram where the edges, shown in solid lines 13 and in dashed lines 13' respectively, representing the end size limits of these edges, are spaced slightly apart from one another. This body section 17 will be positioned to advantage on the base of the lid such that crimping edge 13 comes to bear on the box with closing of the lid, substantially in the median section of lower face 41 of this body section, and consequently in a position away from the corners.
Peripheral vertical skirt 31 of the lid projecting towards the bottom of body section 17 promotes application centring of the seal simultaneously on body section 17 and on lip 19 which bears with downwards pressure on internal edge 15 of the rim on closing.
"The length in radial cross-section of this lip is relatively significant, for example from 1.5 cm for adapting to all the opening rim profiles of existing boxes. In particular, U-shaped profile 7, shown in solid lines, comprises the greatest distance between edges 13, 15 of the rim.
Lip 19 may comprise an internal elastic metallic core, not illustrated here, promoting retumrn under pressure on internal edge 15 and thus imperviousness of closing at this level.
This lip is naturally mobile by way of elasticity angularly to body section 17 for 0 4 adapting in height to the internal edge of the rim. The maximum height is illustrated by rim 7' in the form of an inverted V in dashed lines, where the lip reaches a horizontal position on internal edge 15'. In its natural position the lip is pointing towards the inside and downwards according to an angle of approximately 30 relative to the plane of the seal.
The lid is closed by conventional means by clamping the lid on the opening rim of the underlying tint box, by means of rotary cams 43 disposed at regular intervals over the periphery of the lid and bearing on rim 7 of the box.
The double seal obtained at closing, both by body section 17 of the seal on peripheral crimping edge 13 and lip 19 on internal edge 15 of the rim, prevents the paint from going into the rim, during manoeuvring of the lid with its box, and contaminating by drying the paint contained in the box, as already mentioned.
