Description
PLASTICS MOULDED CONTAINER
This invention relates to a plastics moulded container adapted to receive a plug-fitted lid and is particularly concerned with the type of container used for holding paint.
Containers of this type are provided with a bail type handle which is pivotted to the container at two opposite sides. The handle is often mounted on projections on the peripheral wall of the container, which is unsightly, and difficult to mould. To avoid the moulding problem, the projections are sometimes spunwelded to the wall, but are then liable to be weak. External projections interfere with painting of the contaIner wall.
A strong internal projection has been provided, but this involves expensive moulding techniques, using a collapsible core.
It is also known to journal the handle directly in the container wall, but this involves contact of the handle trunnions with the contents, risk of leakage of air into the contents and risk of leakage of the contents.
It would be advantageous to mount the handle trunnions at positions inwardly of the main container wall without contact of the trunnions with the contents and without the need to mould special internal projections.
It would also be aesthetically advantageous to provide a separately made ring adjacent the mouth of the container to provide a ring of a different colour or finish to the main container wall.
The present invention permits both of these advantages to be achieved.
It is known to produce a container in two parts in which a ring is fitted in the mouth of the main container. The ring defines an internal flange for receiving the plug-fitting lid and this two-part constructions avoids the need for using a collapsible mould. It is known both to spin-weld the ring to the main container (e.g. US-4667842) and to snap-engage the ring sealingly in the main container (e.g. GB-2023555).
The present invention provides a plastics moulded container comprising an upper body having a base and a skirt, and an insert snap-fitted in the upper end portion of the opposite skirt opposite to the base and sealingly engaging a formation in the skirt, the insert having an inner formation for receiving a plug-fitting lid, the upper end portion of the skirt extending inwardly of the main part of the skirt at an obtuse angle thereto, as viewed in cross-section, and in a direction away from the base, the insert having an outer collar which surrounds said upper end portion skirt and engages the main portion of the said main portion having projecting means extending away from the base externally of the upper end portion and adapted at opposite sides of the container for pivotally mounting a handle.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of part of a container according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a part-sectional perspective view of a body of the container;
Figure 3 is a part-sectional perspective view of an insert for the body; and
Figure 4 is a sectional view of part of a modified container, with lid, corresponding to the view of Figure 1.
The container shown in Figures 1 to 3 comprises a body 11 having a base 12 and a skirt 13. The skirt has a main portion 14 of cylindrical form an upper end portion, opposite to the base, in the form of a frusto-conical flange 15 which extends from the main portion inwardly of the skirt and away from the base at an obtuse angle to the main portion 14, as viewed in cross-section.
The flange 15 terminates in an annulus 16 provided with a radially inner bead 17 at its upper end, spaced from the flange, and a shoulder 18, adjacent the flange.
The main portion 14 of the skirt has an extension defining an annular lip 20 around the flange and an annular face 21 around the lips, the face extending perpendicular to the axis of the body. The extension of the main portion 14 includes a pair of lugs 23 arranged at opposite sides of the container, i.e.
diametrically opposite or offset from the diametrically opposite positions.
The body is a one-piece injection moulding with the flange angled to permit removal of the moulding from a non-collapsible core.
The container includes an insert 30, which forms the top of the container. The insert comprises an inner annulus 31 provided at a lower end with an annular projection 32. The outer wall 33 of the annulus tapers slightly outwardly from the projection, whereas the inner wall 34 is generally cylindrical. The annulus snap-fits in the annulus 16 on the flange 15 of the skirt 13. A double seal is provided between the annular projection 32 of the insert and the shoulder 18 of the skirt and between the bead 17 of the skirt and the tapered outer wall 33 of the insert.
The insert 30 includes a collar 40 which surrounds the annulus 31. The collar is integrally joined to the annulus by a lidretaining portion 35 and adjoins this portion, at the top of the container, in a radiussed edge 41. The lid-retaining portion 35 includes an upper, stepped part 36 for receiving a complementary edge part 51 of a lid 50. Adjacent the annulus 31 of the insert, the lid-retaining portion 35 has a shoulder 37 under which snap-engages a bead 52 on a resilient wall 53 of the lid.
The lid may, thereby, be secured in plug-fitted relation in the insert, the resilience of the wall 53 being such as to permit levering off of the lid.
The collar 40 is formed with a peripheral channel 43 between a pair of walls 44,45. The lip 20 of the skirt is received in the channel. The outer wall 44 of the collar extends to the radiussed top 41 of the collar for about half of its circumference, but is of relatively short height for the remainder of the circumference. A platform 46, perpendicular to the collar axis, extends between the inner wall 45 and the shortened height portion of the outer wall, so as to define a rebate 47.
Within the rebate, adjacent its opposite ends, are provided recesses 48 in the inner wall, 45, each recess being complementary to a lug 23. With the insert 30 fitted in the skirt 13, the lip 20 is received in the channel 43, as described above, and the lugs are received in the recesses. The outer wall 44 is externally co-terminous with the main portion 14 of the skirt.
Each lug 23 and each recess 48 has an aperture 29,49 for receiving a trunnion 61 of a handle 60. The trunnion has a head 62 which snaps into engagement with the recessed part of the outer wall 44 to retain the trunnion in position. The trunnions 61 thereby serve to assist in retaining the collar on the skirt.
The handle 60 is of the bail type, with a trunnion at each end, and seats on the platform 46 in the rebate 47. (The handle is not illustrated in this position). The handle, therefore, lies substantially within the outermost circumference of the container and, despite this lack of projection, the handle trunnions do not extend into the interior of the container.
The insert is also a one-piece injection moulding and can be moulded in a non-collapsible mould.
It is envisaged that, in a modification, the handle may be located between the lugs and a wall of the collar, the handle having a pair of trunnions at each end extending to both sides of the handle for engaging in apertures respectively in the corresponding lug and the collar wall.
The modification of Figure 4 is similar to that of Figure 1. In the modification, the collar 40 is formed with a peripheral channel which engages with the lip 20 of the skirt, the outer wall of the collar forming a continuation of the outer wall of the skirt. A platform 46 is provided as shown in Figure 3.
In this modification, the outer wall of each lug 23 forms a continuation of the outer wall of the skirt. The insert has an inner peripheral wall 50 between the lugs 23 and the annulus 16 and the inner peripheral wall carries a pair of cylindrical spigots 51. Each spigot has a domed head 52 and a bevelled wall 53 is provided between the shank of the spigot and its head.
Each spigot extends radially outwardly and engages in an aperture in a corresponding lug. The aperture in each lug is defined by a bevelled annular face 55, complementary to the bevelled wall 53 of the corresponding spigot. The bevelling is such as to retain the lug in connection with the insert.
A bail handle 60 of elongate strap form has each end portion formed with an aperture 61, whereby the handle is pivotally mounted on the shank of each spigot 51. The handle is normally seated on the external platform 46 provided in the collar.
The ends of the handle, therefore, are located in gaps between the lugs 23 and the inner peripheral wall 50 of the insert.
The design and flexibility of materials is such that the handle snap-engages over each head 52 for pivotal mounting on each spigot 51. The lugs 23 are also capable of being flexed radially outwardly to permit mounting of the insert with the spigots located between the lugs. The lugs then snap-engage over the heads of the spigots.
The bevelled wall 53 and face 55 are provided to facilitate snap-engagement of the lugs over the spigot heads. The bevelling in the lugs provides a thinner and more flexible marginal region around the aperture in the lug and permits a neat arrangement with the head substantially accommodated within the thickness of the wail of the lug.
