361 Milperra Road, Bankstown, New South Wales, 2200, Australia ROBERT CARRUTHERS Spruson Ferguson, Patent Attorneys, Level 33 St Martins Tower, 31 Market Street, Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia 44( 4044 Complete Specification for the invention entitled: A FOLDING CHAIR/STRETCHER The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us DF/22T ji SIt 2 The present invention relates to a foldable stretcher/chair to aid in the transportation of invalid and disabled persons.
It is a disadvantage of stretchers and other pieces of equipment to handle invalid or disabled persons that the stretcher/chair is not easily convertible between the chair and stretcher configurations.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantages.
There is disclosed herein a foldable chair/stretcher to aid in the trancportation of invalid or disabled persons, said chair/stretcher comprising a base frame having a first body support portion, and a sub-frame mounted on said base frame and providing a second body support o o portion, and wherein said sub-frame is movably mounted on said base frame o 0 0 so as to be movable from a first position, wherein said support portions 0 00 o o provide a stretcher configuration, to a second position wherein said support portions provide a trendelenburg configuration, and to a third position wherein said support portions provide a chair configuration wherein said first body support portion provides a backrest.
A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Fig. 1 is a schematic side elevation of a chair/stretcher in a chair configuration; Fig. 2 is a schematic side elevation of the chair/stretcher of Fig. 1 in a trendelenburg configuration; Fig. 3 is a schematic side elevation of the chair/stretcher of Fig. 1 using the backrest thereof in various angular orientations; and Figs. 4 to 6 are schematic side elevations of an 01 81 operating mechanism employed in the chair/stretcher of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a chair/stretcher 10. The chair/stretcher 10 has three working configurations. The first working configuration (Fig. 1) provides a chair, the second configuration provides a stretcher with a trendelenburg facility (Fig. and the third configuration provides a stretcher (Fig. 3) with an adjustable backrest, The stretcher 10 of the accompanying drawings has a base frame 11 upon which there is movably mounted a first sub-frame 12. A second sub-frame 13 is also mounted on the 0 base frame 11. The sub-frame 13 provides a first body 2 support portion 14 while the sub-frame 12 provides a second ooo body support portion 15. The body support portion 0 consists of two sub-portions 15A and °The base frame 11 is provided with telescopic extensions 16 as well as wheel assemblies 17. Ground engaging members 18 are also provided and attached to the base frame 11 together with side rails 19. The sub-frame 13 j is pivotally attached at one end to the base frame 11 and is further provided with a bracing strut 20, The strut enables location of the sub-frame 13 at any desired angle relative to the horizontal between 0 and 90°. The support portion 14 accordingly provides a backrest which may be inclined.
The sub-frame 12 consists of two frame portions 21 and 22 which are pivotally attached by a pivot assembly 23 to enable movement of the sub-frame 12 between the positions depicted in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The frame portion 21 is pivotally attached at one end to the base frame 11 while the DF/400t 3 i frame portion 22 is pivotally attached to a support member 43, The support member 43 in turn is pivotally attached to the base frame 11, Extending diagonally from one end of the frame portion 22 to the base frame 11 is an adjustment assembly 24 best seen in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, which securely locates the sub-frame 12 in any one of the positions of Figs.
1, 2 and 3.
The adjustment assembly 24 includes two telescopically associated rods 25 and 26 which are telescopically movable between the positions shown in Figures 4, 5 and 6. In the position shown in Figure 6, the adjustment assembly 24 holds o° the stretcher in the configuration shown in Figure 3. When ooo the adjustment assembly 24 is in the position shown in Figure o o 5, the stretcher is held in the position shown in Figure 2.
o When the adjustment assembly 24 is arranged as shown in Figure 4, the stretcher forms the chair of Figure 1.
The rods 24 and 25 are pivotally attached to cross members 27 and 28.
The members 25 and 26 are held in their various 120 positions by means of an operating lever 29 pivotally mounted on a yoke 30. The innerend of the lever 29 is provided with a projection which engages within one of a series of apertures in the rod 25. The apertures basically define the positions of the rods 25 and 26 as shown in Figures 4 to 6.
Preferably a spring would bias the projection into contact with the rod DF/400t -4- •I I
