Abstract

Abstract An accommodation ladder is a portable flight of steps down a ship's side usually suspended parallel to the ship's side, used for boarding the ship from a small pier or boat. These accommodation ladders are usually suspended by cables or ropes from a davit on board the ship. With safety becoming of utmost importance for mariners it is important to limit the amount of swing in an accommodation ladder. The current claims describe a switchable permanent magnetic clamp attached preferably rotatably and at adjustable angle to one end of an adjustable length arm, the other end of which can be fitted to the accommodation ladder. The adjustable arm can be extended to required length and the magnet placed in contact with the ship's hull and turned on, providing a rigid anchor for the steps. Item C is an extendable hinged arm having joints or swivels Items D which can be locked in a desired position by means of a nut Items E. Items E could alternatively be a knurled knob or over-centre locking device. At least one of joint or swivel Items D is of the type capable of providing hinge or swivel action in two planes. Item F is a metal or rigid plastic plate fixed to the end of the extendable arm for mounting by screws or bolts and nuts to a ship's accommodation ladder.

Claims (6)

1. A switchable permanent magnet clamp removeably attached to one end of a preferably extendable arm said arm being lockable at various extended lengths.
2. A switchable permanent magnet clamp removably and preferably rotatably attached to one end of a preferably extendable arm said arm being hinged at one or more points and lockable at various extended angles and lengths.
3. An assembly as described in Claims 1 and 2 having at least one of the hinged points hinged and operable at right angles to the other or others.
4. An assembly as described in Claims 1 to 3 above wherein the opposite end of the extendable arm to that on which the magnet clamp is mounted has hingeably affixed a flat plate for fixing preferably removeably upon another flat surface.
5. An assembly as described in Claims 1 to 4 above wherein the switchable permanent magnet clamp is attached to one end of the said extendable arm by means of an isolating flexible rubber mounting.
6. An assembly as decsribed in Claim 1 where the extendable arm is of the telescopic or linear bearing type.
