One can also start from partially or completely dehydrated calcium nitrate; in this case, the nitric acid used for dissolving may be even thinner, so that after conversion one finally arrives at a 59% satire.
Since a dilute acid is finally obtained when the gypsum is systematically washed out with increasingly weaker nitric acid, this is used as a solvent for the dehydrated calcium nitrate and in this way the conversion of the thinner washing acids into a more tradable concentration is achieved without having to rely on distillation is. Melting the calcium nitrate is the only heat required.
Just as you can use thinner nitric acid for dissolving when using more or less dehydrated calcium nitrate, you can also use weaker and therefore cheaper sulfuric acid with such calcium nitrate.
The nitric acid obtained in this way contains about as few solids as the stronger acids prepared in the same way. Apart from very little calcium salt, it contains little magnesium salt if the calcium nitrate used contained such. When using the calcium nitrate mentioned in the example, the total residue of the nitric acid obtained there was 1.3% of the nitric acid, its gypsum content was only 0.1%. Such nitric acid can be used directly for most technical purposes.
