EMI1.1
belasteten Druckknopfes, Bolzens od. dgl., bekannt (DE-AS 1766598).
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The invention relates to a coupling device for releasably connecting two dental handpiece parts which can be coupled axially to one another or a handpiece part with the connection fitting of a supply line which can be connected to the handpiece part, with a resilient latching mechanism in the form of one or more arranged and coupled in one of the parts to be connected State engaging in counter-members arranged on the other part, the two coupling parts axially holding together locking members, which can be disengaged from the counter-members by means of an actuating element which can be adjusted under the action of a radially directed force.
Various coupling systems are known for the rapid coupling and uncoupling of dental handpiece parts, be it with one another, with a hose fitting or with a drive unit.
From DE-OS 2152320 a coupling device is known in which a coupling ring which is resilient in the radial direction is arranged on one handpiece part and, in the coupled state, bears against the inner wall of the other handpiece part. The axial holding force is generated here exclusively by clamping friction (surface pressure) between the coupling ring and the inner wall of the handpiece parts. The parts are uncoupled by axially pulling the parts apart while overcoming the clamping force.
An actuating element which brings coupling members and counter-members into and out of engagement is therefore not present in this known coupling device. Accordingly, such a coupling device does not offer sufficient security against axial sliding, or, if the clamping force is chosen so large that sufficient security would be available, the coupling and uncoupling of the handpiece parts would be unacceptably difficult.
In contrast, coupling devices which have latching and counter-elements which can be brought into and out of engagement with one another and which can be uncoupled by means of an actuating element are more advantageous, in particular more user-friendly.
Of the latter coupling systems are in the manner of a bayonet lock
EMI1.1
loaded push button, bolt or the like, known (DE-AS 1766598). When pressure is applied to the actuating element, locking elements, e.g. B. coupling hook, with corresponding counter-members, for. B. grooves, out of engagement. For coupling only one handpiece part needs to be pushed axially onto the other handpiece part to be coupled; the locking members automatically engage with the counter-members. The handpiece parts are then secured against unintentional axial sliding.
Although the type of actuation of the locking device by radial pressing is to be regarded as advantageous, inter alia because the parts to be coupled do not have to be rotated relative to one another as in the case of a bayonet connection, the actuating part projecting radially still becomes
EMI1.2
the known arrangement also relatively expensive.
The object of the invention is to create a coupling device which is simple in construction, allows radial actuation and avoids disruptive, protruding parts, so that an improvement is achieved with regard to keeping the handpiece clean.
The object is achieved in a coupling device of the type mentioned in the invention in that an elastic sleeve, in particular a sleeve with a circular cross section, is provided as the actuating element, the surface of which forms part of the lateral surface of at least one coupling part or this lateral surface on the Coupling part continues, and the wall of which is elastically deformable under radial pressure on the sleeve, that the sleeve is connected to the latching or counter-members, and that when the sleeve is deformed, the latching members can be brought out of engagement with the counter-members.
An essential advantage of the coupling device according to the invention is that it has no parts that protrude from the outside. Its outer diameter can be seamlessly adapted to the diameter of the other handpiece parts or the connection fitting of a supply line,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
so that smooth transitions are created that ensure that the surface is kept clean. Another advantage can be seen in the fact that the individual latching elements can be combined in a single component, as a result of which simple manufacture and assembly can be achieved.
The locking members and the elastic sleeve can be arranged on one of the handpiece parts to be coupled to one another, or the sleeve and the locking members can be in one piece. The locking members can also be located on the inside of the sleeve wedge nose of the sleeve. According to a further proposal, the sleeve can be provided with longitudinal slots to increase the elasticity. Good manageability results if the locking members engage in the counterpart with the interposition of a ball bearing. It is structurally simple if the sleeve carries the latching members at its end facing away from the neck piece of the handpiece. In terms of operation, it is more advantageous if the points of attack of the radial pressure to be used to release the coupling part are marked on the sleeve.

6 shows a section through a sleeve in FIG. 4 in plane I.
1 shows two handpiece parts to be axially coupled to one another, namely a turbine elbow 1 and a coupling piece 2 and a supply line 4 which can be connected to them by means of a connection fitting 3. The parts are shown side by side in the axial position in which they are in the coupled or screwed state.
The coupling piece --2-- has a threaded connection --22-- at its rear end and two guide cylinders --30, 31-- at the instrument-side end of the coupling piece --2--, which with a sliding fit in the corresponding area of the handle section --5-- of the turbine
EMI2.1
Holes-32. 33-inserted-grip collar of the turbine elbow --1-- grasp, axially fixed and can be released again by lifting these lugs. Details can be seen from FIGS. 2 and 3.
Coupling piece --2-- can be freely rotated within the turbine angle piece when it is engaged. With the coupling device explained in more detail below, a pluggable rotary connection of the coupling piece with the turbine angle piece is created, which eliminates a second screwing point and at the same time creates a quick connection for changing the angle pieces.
Fig. 2 shows the design of the coupling piece --2-- and its interaction with the handle part --5-- of the angle piece --1-- in detail. A stepped cylindrical body --21-- carries at its free end the external thread --22-- for screwing to the connection fitting - the supply hose-4-- and contains a hole in the 3 pipe sections --24, 25 and 26-- open, which are brought into engagement with corresponding counterparts of the connection fitting --3-- of the hose --4--, the connection fitting receiving the pipes and with an end face against a seal at the base of the hole --23-- 27-- comes to the plant. This type of screw connection and seal is well known.
The body --21-- carries an annular sleeve --29-- on an extension --28-- and continues towards the contra-angle in two cylindrical extensions --30 and 31--, the one with sliding fit in two analog bores - 32 and 33--, which are located in the coupling part --55-- of the contra-angle handpiece --1--.
The end faces of the cylinders --30 and 31-- are at a distance from the opposite bottom surfaces of the stepped bore and form an annular space --34-- and a cylindrical cavity - -34 '-. Driving air for the turbine is fed in from the pipe section --24-- and through a drilling
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Guide --35- into the annular space --34--, from where it is passed through a further hole --36-- of the coupling part -55-into the pipe 37-- and to the head of the elbow.
Cooling water is led through the pipe section 25, passes through the channels 38 and 39 to the end face of the cylinder 31 and from there it enters the pipe 40 via the cavity 34 ' Forwarding to the drill head. The pipe --26- is intended for the supply of compressed air, which is either used to atomize the cooling water at the drill head or, under separate control, can only be used as blown air in the sense of a compressed air syringe to clean the drilling field on the tooth and in this application as a chip -Blower has become known. The air flows through holes --41 and 42-- into a ring channel --43-- of the body --55-- and further via the hole --44-- adjoining the ring channel to the pipe --45--, which leads into the drill head.
In the cylinders-30 and 31-sealing rings-46 and 47-are stored in ring grooves, which come into contact with the corresponding bores and seal the media propellant air and cooling water against each other and against the third medium, blowing air in the ring channel-43-. Sealing the blown air in the ring channel 43 to prevent it from escaping in the second direction can be effected by a further O-ring 48 which is mounted in the body, but which can also be dispensed with if an appropriately precise fit of the cylinder surfaces is selected. The operating pressure for blown air is much lower than that for propellant air and thus a certain leakage loss that has to be accepted with a fit seal.
The return air from the drill head comes from the cavity-49-the gripping sleeve of the coupling piece --50-- and is fed via channels --51-- to a filter body --52--, after which it flows out into the open. The filter body can consist of felt or a porous sintered mass and has the purpose of both absorbing oil from the return air and also having a sound-absorbing effect.
The filter body is covered by the end of the grip sleeve of the coupling piece --50-- and carried by the coupling part --55--.
The sleeve-29-is firmly connected to the body -21--, is provided with an internal recess - and, with this hollow shape, engages over a collar-shaped counter-member --54-of the coupling part --55-- with two diametrically inward facing wedge lugs serving as locking members-56-. On the inner wall of the counterpart --54-- there is a ball ring --57--, which is held in position by a ring-58--, which in turn is positioned axially with play to the ball ring by a second ring-59. The wedge lugs --56- overlap the ball ring --58-- and engage over its flat surface --60--.
The locking movement is made possible by the elasticity of the sleeve wall of the sleeve --29--, whereby axial longitudinal slots --61-- further increase the deformability of the sleeve. When the body 21-- is inserted into the contra-angle handle, the wedge lugs --56- slide over the cone --62-- of the counterpart --54-- and over the ring --58--, whereby the full-walled part - -63-- the sleeve --29-- resiliently oval-shaped and engages. In order to lift the key tabs out of the locking position, it is sufficient to press against the wall of the ring part --63-- of the sleeve --29-- perpendicular to the cutting plane and in this way close the aforementioned oval deformation and the radial lifting of the key tabs cause.
The deformation and latching movement of the sleeve 29 —and its wedge noses —56- is shown in cross section in FIG. 6, the dashed contour corresponding to the coupling state shortly before it snaps into place. The longitudinal slots-61-also serve to direct the return air from the contra-angle to the outside and, in the manner of knurling, also form a handle when the <coupling piece-2-- is screwed to the supply hose.
The design of the sleeve 29 as a detent element of the function described has the advantage that detents, detent spring and actuator are combined in one single component, the outer diameter of which is adapted to the diameter of the handle of the contra-angle handpiece and does not contain any protruding parts on the outside. as is known in other locking devices of similar application. In particular, the arrangement of separate components as detent springs and handling has always given rise to malfunctions and has also required complex machining and assembly.
The spherical ring --57-- and the ring --58-- over it form a cageless ball bearing against the counterpart --54--, which absorbs axial forces and the rotational mobility of the (coupling piece-2-- against the elbow-l- This storage takes
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the axial pressure that normally exists in the annular space --34-- and acts on the end face of the cylinder --30-- and thus on the coupling piece --2--.
The sleeve with the locking lugs does not have to be part of the coupling piece; according to
Fig. 3 can also be assigned to the handle of the elbow. This sleeve --64-- is with the open one
Center on one step --66-- of the grip sleeve --67-- of the contra-angle --1-- and fastened by screwing an inner collar --68-- to the coupling part --69--. The recess --53-- with the splines-56-- overlaps a part of the coupling part --65-- and the counterpart --70--, a spherical ring --57-- and a ring. The longitudinal slots - are up to extends over the filter body --52-- to allow the return air to escape from the drill head.
The cylindrical extension --71-- carries --57-- and the
Ring --58-- a circlip --72-- and then a rotating ring --73--, which rests against two 0-rings 74 and 75-- and has a longitudinal stop against the collar --76--. The hose side
The screw connection and the pipe connections correspond to FIG. 2.
The rotating ring --73--, provided with knurls on the outside, serves to regulate the flow of the cooling water, for which purpose the supply channel --77-- via a hole --78-- between the two O-rings on the inner wall of the ring - 73-- guided and offset circumferentially by a second
Bore --79-- continues towards the coupling point. The ring --73-- has incorporated a wedge-shaped ring groove --80-- in its bore, which extends only over part of the circumference, runs out shallowly to both ends and thus forms a crescent-shaped channel that is in the same plane with the mouth of both holes --78, 79--.
Depending on the rotary position of the ring --73--, the bores --78, 79-- can be wholly or partially connected to each other or can also be covered by the smooth part of the ring, which means that flow control and shut-off for the cooling water supply are possible.
In order to have a counterhold for the rotary adjustment of the ring --73-- and to be able to screw the coupling piece to the supply hose, the collar - is provided with an outer knurl.
On the ring part --63-- of the sleeve --64-- there is a marking --81-- in the form of a counterbore or hole as a marking for the attack of the fingers to actuate the locking device when uncoupling. As already described, the points of attack 900 are offset from the wedge noses --56--.
The design of the coupling part --2-- is also possible in such a way that the connection of the flow lines between the coupling part and the elbow is not in the handle part, but in the neck of the drill head, as shown in Fig. 4. The coupling part is of the same design on the hose side, as already described for FIG. 3, the latching device as well, the handle sleeve --82-- carrying the wedge lugs --56-- at its rear end and being of one piece.
The grip sleeve extends to the kink of the contra-angle handpiece and is screwed there onto the thread attachment --83-- of the neck piece --84--. In the neck piece --84-- there is in the knee area coaxial with the handle sleeve those stepped bores-85, 86-, which serve to accommodate the front plug-in cylinders --87 and 88-of the coupling part, in their cavity - the propellant air and through pipes - -90, 91-- Cooling water and blown air can be supplied. The continuation from the coupling point, which is sealed with O-rings --46, 47, 48-- and contains ring channels --43 and 34--, as already described, takes place through channels -89 ', 90' and 91 '- to the exit points of the drill head.
The return air from the drill head is directed from the duct --92-- (Fig. 5) into the cavity --93-- of the grip sleeve and through the filter body --52-- and the longitudinal slots --61-- to the outside . The filter body --52-- can only be loosely guided in the grip sleeve and attached to the coupling piece, making it easily accessible for cleaning.
The design of the coupling device according to the invention and the adaptation of the associated straight and contra-angle handpieces is not limited to the described embodiments.
So it is z. B. conceivable for the plug connection of the coupling part to interchange the hollow form and the positive form or to transfer all media radially from a single coupling cylinder into the hollow form at the coupling point. Furthermore, pipelines can be replaced by channels or bores and vice versa. The instruments that can be connected to the coupling part do not have to be
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
must be elbow pieces, but straight handpieces and even air / water syringes can be operated with a suitable connection on the coupling part and it is also possible to install air motors, which in turn can provide mechanical drive for suitable handpieces and elbows.
