Process for obtaining pure 4,4'-dihydroxy-diarylalkanes
The invention relates to a method for obtaining pure 4,4'-dihydroxy-diarylalkanes which, for. B. as
Starting products are used for the production of polycarbonates.
It has been proposed to produce pure 4,4'-dihydroxy-diarylalkanes by eluting the condensation products from monohydric phenols and ketones, which in addition to excess phenol contain colored and resinous impurities, in an elution process with organic or halogen-containing substances
Subject to hydrocarbons below +17 C. According to GDR patent specification No. 46,281, ethylene chloride, 1, 1, 2, 2-tetrachloroethane, trichlorethylene or chlorobenzene at temperatures below +17 ° C., preferably +5 ° C., are preferably used as eluants.
The method has the disadvantage that the elution takes a relatively long time and the purified products still contain a considerable proportion of coloring by-products. In addition, the sulphate ash content is still high.
It is the purpose of the invention to produce 4,4'-dihydroxy-diarylalkanes of higher purity.
The invention is based on the object of subjecting the crude, contaminated condensation products to an effective purification.
According to the invention, this is achieved by adding 3-30 gel%, preferably 8-16% by weight, phenol or cresol to the halogen-containing or aromatic hydrocarbons used for elution according to GDR patent specification No. 46.281, and adding the elution mixture below 0 C, preferably to -50 C to -80 C, is cooled.
The halogen-containing or aromatic hydrocarbons containing phenol or cresol are then used in a known manner for elution under a slight negative pressure.
The advantages of the process according to the invention are that purer 4,4'-dihydroxy-diarylalkanes are obtained, which can be seen from a more rapid increase in the melting range, a further decrease in the coloring components and a lower sulphate ash content. In addition, the products are more heat-resistant and the eluents required for cleaning can be used in smaller quantities.
Dihydroxy-diarylalkanes purified in this way are of particular interest for the production of high molecular weight colorless polycarbonates which are produced both by the solution polycondensation process and by the transesterification process. The appropriately purified dihydroxy-diarylalkanes produce polycarbonates with likewise improved properties.

Impurities are sucked off sharply after cooling to a temperature below +5 C in a separating tube or on a suction filter and, after brief washing with ice water and pressing together, immediately afterwards covered with ethylene chloride, to which 100 g of phenol per liter of solvent are added. The elution is carried out without interruption with a phenol-containing solvent cooled to below 00 ° C. under a weak vacuum, the condensation product having to remain covered as far as possible by the solvent until it becomes colorless.
After the elution process, the last residues of acid and solvent are removed by washing with water at 20'C following a sharp suction.
The eluent with the impurities is worked up by distillation and both the pure solvent and the phenol are reused.
