Th. ) der in Beispiel 1 beschriebenen Verbindung erhalten, F. = 110-112 C.

Process for the preparation of new triphenyltin [pyridyl-N-oxide (2)] sulfide
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of triphenyltin [pyridyl-N-oxide (2)] sulfide. This compound represents a new substance and probably has the formula I:
EMI1.1
According to the invention, the new compound is prepared by reacting 2-mercapto-pyridine-N-oxide with a compound of the formula II: (C. H,), SnX, (II) in which X is the hydroxyl group or the anion of an inorganic one or organic acid. The reaction is carried out in an inert organic solvent. It is expedient to use equimolar amounts of the starting materials.
If X is the hydroxyl group, a solvent is advantageously used with the aid of which the water formed can be removed by azeotropic distillation. Working up is carried out by distilling off the solvent, if appropriate in vacuo, and recrystallizing the residue.
The above-mentioned structure of the new compound is confirmed by the work of I. R. Beattie and coworkers in Chem. Ind. 1962, 1429-30 on 5-coordinated tin and by the UV and IR spectrum
EMI1.2
N-oxide are more or less shifted. This proves an interaction of the N-O bond with the tin.
The new compound has good bactericidal and fungicidal activity with low toxicity. Particularly noteworthy is their good effectiveness against skin fungi, for example against epidermophyton. The new compound is therefore suitable for the preparation of antimicrobial agents which, in addition to the active ingredient, also contain a customary solid or liquid carrier and optionally also have surface-active substances, dispersants and adhesives. The processing of the active ingredient into antimicrobial agents takes place in the usual way.
The preparation of the new compound is explained further in the following examples.
Example 1: 36.7 g (0.1 mole) triphenyltin hydroxide and 12.7 g (0.1 mole) 2-mercaptopyridine-N-oxide
EMI1.3
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
mixed with a solution of 12.7 g of 2-mercaptopyridine-N-oxide in 100 ml of methanol. Working up takes place as indicated in Example 1, the yield is 31 g (65% of theory).
Example 3: 40.9 g (0.1 mol) of triphenyltin acetate and 12.7 g (0.1 mol) of 2-mercaptopyridine N-oxide are dissolved in 250 ml of acetone with stirring, then the solvent is distilled off and the residue im Vacuum brought to dryness. It is then recrystallized from ethanol, with any undissolved material having to be filtered off. 24 g (50.5% of theory) of the compound described in Example 1 are obtained, F. = 110-112 C.
