<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Lubricating device for a mechanism in which a
Piston is slidable in a cylinder
The invention relates to an improvement of the lubricating device according to the parent patent no. 222445, in which a lubricating device for a mechanism is described and claimed in which a piston is slidable in a cylinder and a lubricant container is provided between the piston and cylinder outside the latter, with one end of the cylinder is completely closed and the lubricant reservoir is in communication with the closed end of the cylinder,
so that when the piston moves towards the closed end of the cylinder, air and lubricant pass from this end into the lubricant reservoir and when the piston moves in the opposite direction, it returns to the closed end of the cylinder.
This device is intended in particular for a sliding coupling of motor vehicles in connection with a universal joint. In a device of this type, it is known per se that the lubricant container lies within a sleeve-like part of the piston that surrounds the wall of the cylinder.
According to the invention, the improvement of the lubrication device lies in the fact that the lubricant container is provided between the sleeve-like part and the cylinder wall and that the sum of the capacity of the cylinder and the lubricant container remains essentially constant during the sliding of the piston in the cylinder.
The cross-sectional area of the lubricant container is therefore essentially the same as the cross-sectional area of the piston, so that when the latter is moved in the cylinder, the capacity changes in the opposite direction to the lubricant container when the cylinder end is closed.
The container is preferably delimited by elastic seals which are arranged next to the open end of the cylinder or next to the open end of the sleeve-like part. The holding space and the container expediently communicate with one another through an opening in the cylinder wall.
An example embodiment of the invention in connection with a universal joint of a motor vehicle drive shaft is described below with reference to the drawing, further features according to the invention can be seen. The drawing shows the device in side view or half in an axial section.
As usual, the sliding piston 1, 2 is arranged at the end of the drive shaft 3 and the yoke part 4, which is provided with axial ribs and grooves in its cylindrical continuation, is designed as the rear part of the front universal joint of the shaft. The yoke part, later also called the cylinder part 4, has a wall 5, and the piston 1, 2 is also equipped on the outside with axial grooves or ribs for sliding engagement. The cylinder 4, 5 is equipped with an end plate 7 at the inner end of its bore 6, but here - contrary to the usual design - the air hole is missing. The plate 7 therefore completely closes off the inner end of the bore 6 and a closed receptacle space 11 is thus created between the plate 7 and the inner end of the piston 1, 2.
The other end of the cylinder 4, 5 is - as known per se - provided with a seal in the form of a cork ring 8, which is supported by a tubular ring 9 and
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
a washer 10 is retained, around the protruding piston part 2 creates a seal.
A circumferential flange 12 with the rear end of the piston part 2 carries a sleeve-like part 13 made of plastic material that extends forward and forms a section seated on the main piston part 2. Next to the inner end, the sleeve-like part or sleeve 13 has an annular groove
14, which snaps over the flange 12 during assembly and is held in place by a ring 26.
At its outer end, the sleeve 13 is equipped - in a manner known per se - with an annular groove 15 which encloses an elastic seal 16 which rests against the outer wall 5 of the cylinder 4, 5.
The pipe ring 9 is also made of plastic material and snaps into place at the rear end of the cylinder 4. For this purpose. the tubular ring 9 is equipped with an inner lip 17 which engages in the annular outer groove 18 of the cylinder 4, 5. This tubular ring 9 is also provided with an annular outer groove 19 which provides a housing for a further lip-like seal 20 which rests on the inner surface of the sleeve 13 so that the outside of the cylinder 4, 5 between the two seals 16 and 19 within the Bush 13 is a lubricant-retaining container 22 is formed, which is around the cylinder part 5 around.
This lubricant container 22 communicates with the holding space 11 at the inner end of the bore 6 via a radial bore 23 which forms an opening in the cylinder wall 5 at the rear end thereof. One of the usual ribs 24, which would lie in the extension of the radial bore 23, is omitted so that a free passage between the socket space 11 and the bore 23 is created.
The elastic seals 16 and 20 consist of rings of the same shape and of a material such as synthetic rubber and have an approximately square cross-section, the edges of which are lip-like, so that each ring produces a reliable double seal. Air holes 25 in the wall of the sleeve 13 next to the flange 12 ventilate the otherwise closed space at the inner end of the sleeve 13 around the piston part 2. The cork seal 8 prevents the entry of lubricant or dirt into this space.
The inner diameter of the sleeve 13 is chosen such that the maximum space of the lubricant container 22 when the piston 1, 2 is completely inserted into the cylinder 4, 5 is approximately the same as the maximum size of the holding space 11, of the cylinder, i.e. when the piston 1, 2 is at is pulled out furthest. Furthermore, as already mentioned, since the cross-sectional area of the container 22 is approximately equal to the effective cross-sectional area of the ribbed portion of the piston 2, there is no tendency for pressure to build up in the lubricant with which the device is assembled during assembly during the movement of the piston in the cylinder is filled. This lubricant is merely moved back and forth between the space 11 and the container 22.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. Lubricating device for a mechanism in which a piston is slidably displaceable in a cylinder and a lubricant container is provided between the piston and cylinder outside the latter, one end of the cylinder being completely closed and the lubricant container being connected to the closed cylinder end, so that when moving of the piston against the closed end of the cylinder, air and lubricant pass from this end into the lubricant container and when the piston is moved in the opposite direction it returns to the closed end of the cylinder, according to patent no.
222445, in particular for a sliding coupling of motor vehicles in connection with a universal joint and wherein the lubricant container lies within a sleeve-like part of the piston that surrounds the wall of the cylinder, characterized in that the lubricant container (22) is between the sleeve-like part (13) and the cylinder wall (5) is provided and that the sum of the capacity (11) of the cylinder (4) and the lubricant container (22) remains essentially constant during the sliding of the piston (1, 2) in the cylinder (4).
