Schnellarbeitsstahl.

High speed steel.
Sehnellwork steels are steels which, hardened at temperatures of around 1200 to 13000 C, have a Rockwell hardness of around 63 to 66 RC and which maintain or even increase this hardness when they are heated up to temperatures of 560 to 600 C. So far in one

It has also already been proposed to manufacture the known high-speed steels of the above composition with even higher vanadium and cobalt contents and then to bring the carbon content of the steels into a specific relationship to the vanadium and cobalt content.
In doing so, however, the view was always held that the twisting character of steels would only be preserved if their tungsten content was more than 10%.
Extensive tests have now shown that the properties of high-speed steels do not depend on their tungsten content to the extent previously assumed, and under certain conditions not at all, and that very useful high-speed steels are obtained if the tungsten content of the vanadium content increases by 2-5% Steels is reduced below 10%. Steels with, for example, 1-3 to 1-4% carbon, 5 to 7% tungsten, 3 to 4% chromium and 5% vanadium practically do not differ in their properties from the high-speed steels of the usual composition. The same applies to steels with an even lower tungsten content, in particular

the strength properties of the steels improve further.
It was also found that the entire tungsten content of the sehnell turning steels can be replaced by vanadium if the steels have a content of at least 5% vanadium and at least

The tungsten-free, high-vanadium and chromium-containing steels require a long tempering at 580 C in order to obtain the full hardness of about 65 RC.
The new high-speed steels are characterized by a low or even lack of tungsten content, a fact that is of great economic importance.
The chromium content of low-tungsten or tungsten-free tendon work steels can be 3 to 10%, alloys in a narrower range of 3 to 6% chromium have proven to be particularly useful.
In addition to chromium and vanadium, the low-tungsten or tungsten-free sehnell work steels can also be alloyed with molybdenum, titanium, tantalum, zirconium, uranium and beryllium, these elements individually or in groups in proportions of o'1 to 3'0%.
With a cobalt content of up to 20%, the performance of the high-speed steels according to the invention is increased in a known manner.
