Process for the production of white opacified enamels using gas-evolving substances as opacifiers.
The invention relates to a process for the production of white-clouded enamels by gas clouding, d. H. using gas-evolving substances as opacifiers.
The present method is characterized in that organic opacifiers are used which at least predominantly consist of high molecular weight hydrocarbons or substitution products thereof. It was found that such opacifiers offer particular advantages as gas opacifiers. These substances can namely be completely adsorbed and retained by the clay or by the enamel vessel, whereby the fact that these substances have a relatively high decomposition temperature means that the gas is generated at a more favorable time than with other opacifiers, etc. not too early, which is beneficial for the regularity of the cloudiness.
Highly polymeric and colloidal substances, the molecules of which at least predominantly consist of hydrocarbons, such as the high-polymer hydrocarbons and the high-polymer and colloidal hydrocarbons and the substitution products of such hydrocarbons and, of all these substances, the solid high-polymer or high-molecular hydrocarbons and are particularly useful as opacifiers their substitution products.
It was further found that such opacifiers also offer a means of producing slips that are storable or snap-lockable. In the enamel industry it is namely when using the usual solid opacifiers such as tin oxide, zirconium oxide and. Like. It is common practice not to use the enamel slip immediately after its production (i.e. immediately after grinding the enamel frit on the mill with water in the presence of the usual mill additives), but only after a longer period of time after its production. It was found that even when gas opacifiers are used, such storable or lockable enamel slips can be obtained if the amount of the gas opacifier added for opacity is removed from the enamel slip or from the clay contained in the enamel slip and the like. like
is completely adsorbed and remains adsorbed even during storage or resting and does not go into solution. The high polymer or high molecular weight colloidal hydrocarbons now have the property that they can be adsorbed by the slip in far larger quantities than is necessary for clouding. The use of these opacifiers therefore also has the advantage that they enable the production of storage-stable or latchable slips, whereby the advantages of storing or latching the enamel slip can also be used for gas opacifiers.
Such opacifiers, such as resins, expediently pitch, tars, asphalt, etc., especially of mineral origin, also have the advantage that they cannot cause any disruptive coloration of the slip and therefore do not interfere with the application of the enamel slip.
The use of such solid, high molecular weight, especially high polymer hydrocarbons in the form of a dispersion is expedient.
When carrying out the process, products can also be used which contain high polymer or high molecular weight colloidal hydrocarbons or their substitution products mixed with other substances, suitably mixed with substances which have no or only weakly opacifying effects.
