Telecommunications airspace cable and process for its manufacture.
Patent No. 135946 relates to a telecommunication cable with air space cores, the insulation of which consists wholly or partly of substances that are not or only slightly hygroscopic and that have low dielectric losses at high frequencies compared to paper. In this cable, the spacer is wound onto the conductor as a thread or cord in open screw turns.
If up to now one wanted to use a smaller volume for the spacing material than had to be used for a cord wound onto the conductor in a helical manner, disk-shaped bodies were used as spacers. However, these had the disadvantage that they could either only be pushed onto the ladder from the ends or, if they consisted of two halves. had to be attached to the ladder using special clamping devices. In addition, they had the disadvantage that they could only be very narrow, otherwise the advantage of the low capacity they achieved would have been lost again. Because of their narrowness, there was a risk that they would be exposed to mechanical loads, e.g.
B. when the cable bends, tipped over and did not fulfill their task as a spacer or only incompletely.
According to the invention, the operating capacity of a telecommunication airspace cable is significantly reduced according to the fact that the spacers used are bodies attached to the conductor in a manner known per se at appropriate distances from one another, consisting of two or more adjacent turns of a helically wound insulating material in cord, Strip or thread shape exist.
As insulating materials which have low dielectric losses and are not or at least only slightly hygroscopic, for example cellulose esters, cellulose ethers, Tjipetir, rubber or rubber treated with suitable swelling agents are possible. The insulating material used as a spacer can be helically wound before it is applied to the conductor or also during the application to the conductor. In many cases it can also be useful to make the spacer out of an insulating

can be made before application to the conductor or only after application to the conductor. In the latter case, however, it is then necessary to push the insulating tubes onto the conductor.
A spacer, which according to the invention consists of several turns of helically wound cords, strips or threads, has the advantage over the previously known, spaced-apart bodies that it can easily be applied to any point on the conductor and that it has a large contact surface without significantly increasing the amount of material used. Because of the space between the windings, cavities are left free within the spacing body, which naturally behave favorably in terms of capacity.
The spacers according to the invention can, because of the large contact surface they have and the uniform spacing of the outer shell that they guarantee, be arranged at significantly wider distances than the previously used spacer disks, which again results in a reduction in capacity. If you use the distance

Under certain circumstances, an outer insulating sleeve over the spacer can be completely dispensed with because the spacers according to the invention adequately support the metal jacket because of their wide contact surface.
The figure shows an embodiment of a cable according to the invention. 1 is the conductor on which the spacers 2, which are designed in accordance with the invention, are applied. Over the spacers is a, z. B. made of rubber. or rubber mixtures consisting of an outer insulating sleeve 3, over which a lead jacket 4 is arranged.
