Schaltmittel 6,
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Arrangement for regulating the operating parameters of an electrical machine by means of grid-controlled steam or gas discharge vessels.
The subject of patent no. 122390 is. a particularly simple and expedient control of grid-controlled vapor or gas discharge vessels, namely, the grid circles receive a control voltage which is composed of an alternating voltage of constant amplitude and phase and a variable direct voltage. As already explained, the advantage over other arrangements is that a simple control transformer or an additional winding on the main transformer supplies the AC voltage component and the regulation is effected solely by the DC voltage component. Grid-controlled rectifiers are an important area of application. Before the invention is discussed, the mode of operation should be explained using the curves in FIG.
Let a sinusoidal alternating voltage P be inserted in the anode circuit. Furthermore are
EMI1.1
Control voltages differ only with regard to the direct voltage component, while the alternating voltage component is kept constant with regard to amplitude and phase. As can also be seen from FIG. 3, it is expedient to give the alternating grid voltage a phase lag compared to the alternating anode voltage.
Assuming that the discharge is initiated when the grid voltage changes from negative values to positive values, the result is that if a control voltage G1 is present, the discharge current starts at time X1, if a control voltage G2 is present at time X2, at If a control voltage Cg is present, the discharge vessel is conductive during the full positive half-wave. As need not be explained in more detail, by changing a negative direct voltage component, the point in time at which the discharge is initiated can be shifted so that the discharge vessel only becomes conductive or not conductive at all towards the end of the positive half-wave of the anode alternating voltage.
The invention relates to an arrangement for regulating operating parameters of an electrical machine by means of grid-controlled vapor or gas discharge vessels, the control electrodes of which are supplied with a control voltage consisting of an AC voltage component and a DC voltage component, according to Patent No. 122,390, and consists in reducing the grid AC voltage by approximately 90 lags behind the associated anode AC voltage.
In Fig. 1 an embodiment of the subject invention is shown, which relates to an automatic rapid control of the voltage or excitation of an electrical machine, while FIGS. 2-5 show curves to explain the mode of operation.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing, the control arrangement according to the invention for controlling the voltage of the generator 1 is used. A synchronous machine 1 feeds a three-phase network 2. The generator is provided with a field winding 3. which is fed by an exciter machine 4. The excitation machine 4 for its part contains a field winding 5 which is normally fed from an alternating current network via grid-controlled discharge vessels with an ionizable medium, the control of which has already been discussed above. Switching means 6,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
which can be operated both manually and automatically are provided in order to excite the field winding 5 during the starting of the machine 4 itself.
As can be seen, the switch contains two movable contacts 7 and 8 which work together with fixed contacts 9, 10, 11 and 12. Means are also provided to control the moving parts of the switch, a solenoid 13 which is actuated by means of an auxiliary switch 15 is used for this purpose. In the position shown, the contacts 7 and 8 close a circuit via the fixed contacts 10 and 12, so that the field winding 5 is excited by the generator 4 itself. A variable resistor 16 is provided in order to be able to regulate the excitation voltage during starting.
Normally, however, the field winding is fed from an alternating current source, for example the network 2, via grid-controlled discharge vessels 17, 18 and 19 with vapor or gas filling or some other form of discontinuously controlled tubes. It is known that such discharge vessels have, compared with discharge vessels, with pure electron discharge. whose discharge is continuously controlled, the advantage of high current permeability and small voltage drops. The term "discontinuously controlled tube" is therefore chosen in order to identify the type of discharge vessel with regard to its control.
As already stated, the onset of the discharge current in the tube is determined by the control grid, but the discharge current can only be interrupted by reducing the anode voltage below its critical value. The AC voltage is supplied to the vessels 17, 18 and 19 or the field winding 5 by means of a transformer 20 which can be fed from the network 2. The primary winding of the transformer is preferably connected in delta and the secondary winding in zigzag star, whereby the direct current magnetization is kept away from the transformer legs.
The anodes of the vessels are connected to the ends of the secondary winding, while the field winding 5 is inserted between the star point of the secondary winding and the cathodes of the vessels via contacts 7, 9 and 8, 11. A transformer 23 is provided for the Xathode heating, the correct heating voltage being set by a variable resistor 24. The control electrode of each vessel receives an alternating voltage derived from the network 2 via a transformer 25.
Resistors 26, 27 and 28 are also inserted into the grid circles. Normally the alternating voltage is essentially constant, and the phase relationship between the anode voltage and the grid voltage is kept constant by the arrangement of the windings of the transformers 20 and 25 as shown. A suitable arrangement ensures that the alternating control voltage supplied to the grid circles lags behind the corresponding anode voltage by 90. Since the tubes work on the field circuit, which represents a relatively high inductive load, an essentially complete control with 900 phase shift of the grid voltage can be achieved.
To regulate the discharge current to small mean values, it is advisable to provide capacitors 29, 30 and 31, which are connected directly between the grid and cathode of each tube, in order to achieve a relatively low resistance for the current flow from the grid to the cathode. The vessels are controlled by a variable direct voltage that is connected in series with the fixed alternating voltage. As shown, this is achieved in that a resistor 32 is inserted into the grid circle of the vessels 17, 18 and 19 and the voltage drop across this resistor is changed by a direct voltage which is taken from a determination circuit.
This voltage-dependent circuit contains a bridge arrangement that
EMI2.1
that have a non-linear voltage-current characteristic. The bridge arrangement preferably contains resistance elements of the same type in the opposite branches, that is to say, for example, resistors 33 and 34 with linear characteristics and resistors 35 and 36 with non-linear characteristics. It has been found that a material containing silicon carbide and carbon or other conductive materials is particularly suitable as a material having a nonlinear characteristic.
In order to use all three phases for the regulation, a three-phase rectifier is used, namely the three single-phase voltages of the generator are converted into DC voltage, so that the resulting voltage is a function of the voltages of all three phases. The bridge circuit receives a DC voltage dependent on the generator voltage, namely by means of a transformer 37 and the rectifiers 38, 39 and 40. The transformer 37 is provided with a primary winding 41 which is connected in delta and connected to the alternating current network 2 via suitable resistors 42 is. The transformer 37 is provided with a plurality of single-phase secondary windings 43.
The various phase windings are connected to the full-wave rectifiers 38, 39 and 40, and that is why full-wave rectifiers are used so that the harmonics of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
individual rectifiers can be reduced. This is not necessary in itself, but it contributes to perfection. In principle, all known rectifiers can be used for these rectifiers, but dry rectifiers should preferably be used. The DC circuits of the rectifiers are connected in series and the entire voltage is applied to terminals 44 and 45 of the bridge arrangement.
A series resistor 46 is used to set the bridge voltage (similar to resistor 42). It has been found to be advisable to make the setting primarily by means of the resistors 42.
The output voltage of the bridge arrangement is fed to the grid circuit of a discharge vessel, and a discharge vessel with a pure electron discharge is preferably used. Two discharge vessels can be arranged in parallel. This improves the reliability of the control device; if one of the vessels fails, the other automatically takes over the full flow. For the sake of simplicity, however, only one vessel is shown. This discharge vessel acts as a voltage amplifier in that changes in the anode current cause changes in the voltage drop across the control resistor 32 of the vessels 17, 18 and 19.
The anode voltage is fed to the vessel 47 by means of a transformer from a transformer auxiliary winding 48 via a full-wave rectifier 49. An electrical filter is also provided, which contains a choke coil 50 and a parallel connection of resistor 51 and capacitor 52. The cathode heating current for the vessel 47 is taken from the transformer 37 by means of a further auxiliary winding 53. The winding 53 contains a center tap which is connected to the neutral point of the transformer secondary winding of 25. One end of the resistor 32 also has the same potential, while the other end is connected to the upper direct current line of the rectifier 49 via the conductor 55.
When checking the relationship of the anode circle of the vessel 47 and the grid resistance of the vessels. 17, 18 and 19 it should be noted that the resistor 32 is in series with the anode circuit of the. Electron tube 47 lies.
The advantages achieved by the control device described, which responds essentially without inertia, cannot be fully realized if special attention is not paid to the question of overregulation. It is known that overregulation or oscillation during the control process is caused by the time delay in individual parts of the generator circuits or the control device. Although discharge vessels do not have the time delay caused by the moving parts and relays of the usual mechanical regulators, there is still a time delay due to the difference in the current build-up in the exciter and generator fields.
The last-mentioned time delay is comparatively small, and tests have shown that, if an instantaneously operating control arrangement is used, overregulation does not occur, even if means for preventing overregulation are lacking. However, it has been found that such a controller works incorrectly, especially during compensation processes, for example in the event of short circuits or switching processes, and that it is not advisable to operate the generator above its static stability limit. It was also found that overregulation can occur even if the excitation current of the generator is directly influenced. even if no exciter is used. This is a consequence of the armature reactance, which is relatively large in conventional generators.
In order to control such a generator, it is therefore necessary to provide overregulation prevention means which take into account the inertia of the field of the exciter and the effects of the armature reactance when an exciter is used. If the exciter machine is omitted, means for preventing overregulation are nevertheless necessary in order to prevent overregulation because of the armature reactance.
An adjustable resistor 56 is provided to prevent overregulation or to compensate for the time delay caused by the exciter or the armature reactance. The voltage drop across this resistor is changed as a function of the voltage of the exciter 4. A capacitance 57 is in series with the resistor at the terminals of the exciter so that the voltage at resistor 56 only appears during the equalization processes in the exciter circuit, or in other words, when the exciter voltage changes. A resistor 58 is provided in the output circuit of the bridge so that the change in voltage of the grid is delayed so that the feedback circuit has the opportunity to prevent the exciter from overregulating. Furthermore, a capacitance 59 lies parallel to the grid and cathode.
The resistor 58 determines the speed of the voltage application or. descended at the capacitance 59 and the time constant of this series connection of resistor 58 and capacitance 59 determines the time delay of the change in the grid voltage. A capacitance 60 is also parallel to the resistor 58, so that small voltage changes, which are not large enough to control the vessels 17, 18 and 19, can be quickly fed to the grid. A resistor 61 can also be provided in parallel with the capacitance 59. This is used to change the time it takes to change the grid voltage

is required. The arrangement of the elements 58-61 is similar in its mode of operation to the feedback elements of mechanical controllers.
The compensation of the voltage drop and the compensation as a result of the reactive power when two generators are operated in parallel can, if necessary, be achieved in a manner similar to the arrangement of mechanical regulators. A variable resistor 62 and a variable inductance 63, the sizes of which can be adjusted according to the desired compounding, are inserted into a phase of the voltage supplied to the control device. A current transformer 64 supplies the required control voltage when the phase current increases. by means of the variable resistance and the variable inductance. The voltage, which is a function of the voltage drop in terms of phase and size, is fed to the control circuit.
The triangular voltages that are fed to the control device are not balanced, and in the event of a lagging power
EMI4.1
over which tries to increase with leading power factor with the same load, or, in other words, normal voltage drop compensation is achieved.
If two or more synchronous machines work in parallel, it is necessary, provided there is sufficient reactance between the two machines, to adjust the reactive power. For this purpose, a further current transformer 65 is provided in a different phase and, by means of a variable reactance 66, supplies an additional control voltage that adds to the triangular voltages of the primary winding 41 of the transformer, making the voltages asymmetrical in the desired direction, so that the current in the parallel Machines is divided according to their kVA ratings.
When using the control system for generators and reactive power machines, it may be desirable to provide means which limit the output current of the controlled machine and keep it substantially constant when a predetermined value above the full load limit is reached. For this purpose, a device is provided that is influenced by the output current of the regulated machine and takes over the control of the grid of the main lines when the output current of the machine reaches a predetermined value above the full load value. A current transformer 67 is used for this, which is inserted into one of the phase lines 2 and excites an intermediate transformer 68. A suitable resistor 69 is parallel to the primary winding of the transformer 68 and is adjustable.
The secondary winding of the transformer 68 is connected to the input terminals of a full-wave rectifier 70, which, like the rectifiers 38, 39 and 40, preferably also contains dry rectifiers. The
EMI4.2
arrangement. The output voltage of the rectifier 70 is adjusted by means of the resistor 69 so that it is smaller for each current value below the predetermined load value. than the rectified voltage of the rectifiers 38, 39 and 40. With this parallel arrangement of rectifiers there is no possibility of returning the current, since the two groups of rectifiers only allow current to pass in one direction.
At the predetermined load value, however, the terminal voltage of the regulated machine will slowly decrease, and to the same extent as the output voltage of rectifiers 38, 39 and 40 falls below that of rectifier 70, the control and the input voltage of the bridge is now controlled by the output voltage of the rectifier 70 can be determined. With the voltage which is controlled by the current, the regulating device will try to keep the output current essentially constant until the voltage is regulated in the manner described below.
For a better understanding of the full way of working, it is advisable to first look at the way the control elements work. The alternating voltage of circuit 2 is first transmitted down to a suitable voltage, which can be, for example, 220 volts, u. between the transformer 37. This voltage is rectified by the rectifiers 38, 39 and 40. It should be noted that a rectifier unit is provided for each phase. The voltages of the three phases of the generator are rectified and connected to terminals 44 and 45 of the voltage-sensitive bridge arrangement.
If the total DC voltage fed to the bridge has the correct value, which corresponds to the value of the AC voltage to be maintained, then the output voltage of the bridge is zero or. a predetermined value. If the AC voltage exceeds or falls below the prescribed value that corresponds to the tuning or a predetermined detuning, an output voltage is obtained which is either positive or negative with respect to the DC voltage applied to the bridge and is independent of whether the applied voltage is used is too high or too low. The size of this output voltage is

corresponds to the agreed value.
The output voltage of the bridge is fed to the grid of the discharge vessel 47, the mode of operation of which will now be explained in the control circuit.

is shown. The horizontal line N indicates the excitation required when idling, the line H the excitation for half load and the line F the excitation for full load. The greater the sensitivity of the control circuit or the more the line shown reaches the vertical, the smaller the change in the regulated voltage will be.
The change in the regulated voltage as a function of the load is illustrated in FIG. 5, which shows the typical voltage curves of the generator for idling Et and full load Er at power factor 1 as a function of the excitation current Je. Another voltage curve - E ,, is given. This is plotted as a function of the mean value of the current of the vessels 17, 18 and 19. The interaction of E ,. With the other voltage curves it is now possible to regulate the voltage for each load and each power factor. The greatest deviation from idling will occur at full load and the smallest power factor.
By increasing the sensitivity of the control loop, it is possible to make the course of the curve Er almost horizontal and thereby to reduce the deviation between idle and full load.
To explain the mode of operation of the feedback elements that prevent overregulation, we first assume that the load on the generator is zero and that the regulated voltage is equal to the normal no-load voltage. If the load is suddenly switched on, the voltage supplied to the bridge is reduced, and as a result the voltage supplied to the grid circle of the discharge vessel 47 changes. A small change is inserted directly into the lattice circle of the vessel by means of a capacitor 60 and an attempt is made to increase the field excitation by increasing the lattice tension of the vessels. At the same moment the current will begin to flow through the resistor 58 and the capacitor 59 will attempt to change the grid voltage of the discharge vessel in the correct direction.
The constants of these resistors and capacitors are selected and set in this way. that there is a time delay before the voltage on the grid of the discharge vessel builds up to a significant size. The time constant of this control circuit should preferably be approximately equal to the time constant of the excitation circuit.
As soon as the voltage of the exciter 4 begins to increase, a voltage is generated across the resistor 56, the polarity of which is such that it tries to reduce the anode current of the vessel 47 and consequently also the excitation of the exciter 4 as soon as it reaches the required level
EMI6.1
The voltage across resistor 56 changes exponentially with respect to time, if resistor 56 and capacitor 57 are chosen correctly, the voltage will disappear to prevent overregulation once the excitation has reached its correct value. This characteristic enables the regulator to compensate for sudden increases or decreases in load and is very important when the generator is operating above its static limit power.
The capacitor 57 has a very valuable function, since it enables a practically instantaneous change in the grid voltage of the discharge vessel and thereby compensates for the reduction in the generator voltage due to the armature reactance.
If the generator field is controlled directly without the usual excitation machine, the arrangement corresponds essentially to that of FIG. 1 with the exception of small changes.
The damping and rapidly responding elements, in particular the resistor 58, capacitor 59 and capacitor 60, are no longer required, since the time constant of the exciter is no longer required. However, the effect of the anchor reactance does exist and care must be taken to ensure that it is compensated. Since the armature reactance is load-dependent, compensation can be achieved by rectifying a current that is proportional to the load current and inserting this voltage into the circuit to prevent overregulation. As in the embodiment according to FIG. 1, a current transformer 67 is provided for this, which is inserted into one of the phase lines 2 and excites an intermediate transformer 68.
An adjustable resistor 69 is parallel to the primary

Input terminals of a rectifier 70, for example a dry rectifier similar to rectifiers 58, 39 and 40. In contrast to FIG. 1, the DC voltage of the rectifier is via a resistor on a capacitor, just like the voltage of the exciter 4 according to FIG. 1 via a resistor 56 on the capacitor 57, parallel to the DC terminals of the rectifier is a capacitor to reduce the harmonics of the DC voltage of the rectifier.
In this case, however, the polarity of the rectified voltage is reversed when it is fed to the feedback circuit consisting of resistor 56 and capacitor 57 according to FIG. 1, so that the mean value of the output current of the vessels 17 with increasing load.
18 and / 9 is enlarged ver, whereby any change in the generator voltage due to the armature reactance

necessary to achieve the correct compensation, must have a certain value.
In most working conditions, a crude adjustment is the size of the inserted
Voltage and the constants of resistor 56 and capacitor 57 are sufficient, but in cases in which the generator operates above the static load limit, it may be necessary to regulate all these values precisely for the machine in question.
