<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Floatable pump unit.
The invention relates to portable, buoyant pump assemblies in which the drive motor is arranged above and the pump is arranged below the water level. The invention aims to design such units in such a way that, with a construction that is as compact as possible, great stability is achieved and easy assembly is possible. For this purpose, the housing of the unit between the motor and the pump is drawn into a tube that encloses and protects the motor shaft and the floating body is installed in the indentation formed by the indentation of the housing in such a way that it supports the housing at the edges of the bulge. The housing of the unit can be divided into a motor housing and a pump housing.
In this case, the two housings between the motor and pump are each allowed to run out into a pipe socket surrounding the motor shaft.
The floating bodies can consist of two parallel hollow vessels of the same cross-section, which are connected to one another by bands.
The invention is shown in the drawing in an embodiment of a unit, the housing of which is divided into a motor housing and a pump housing.
1 shows a longitudinal section through the entire device, FIG. 2 shows a view from above after the engine hood has been removed, and FIG. 3 shows, on a larger scale, a section through the connection point between the engine frame, engine base plate and engine hood.
It denotes 1 the float, 2 the motor, 3 the pump.
The float 1 consists of two mutually parallel vessels of the same cross-section, which are connected to one another on the top and bottom by bands 4 and 5, respectively. The upper straps run out in handles 4a to make the unit easy to carry.
In the exemplary embodiment, the motor is an electric motor with a vertical shaft 6, the housing of which consists of a plate-shaped base plate 7 and a hood 10, which seals the motor in a watertight manner.
The hood is fastened to edge flanges 11 (FIG. 3) of the base plate 7 by means of screws 12 and the joint between the base plate 7 and the hood is sealed by a rubber ring 13.
The central position of the motor on the base plate is secured by fitting strips 8. The motor shaft is supported in the base plate by a ball bearing 9. The connection line 14 for the electric motor is watertight through the flange of the base plate? passed through and connected to a plug 15 at the end.
In the exemplary embodiment, the pump is a centrifugal pump, the impeller 3a of which is driven directly by the motor shaft 6. The seat 16 of the impeller 3a is spherical in order to enable the impeller 3a to adjust automatically in the event of inaccuracies in manufacture and assembly.
The impeller is coupled to the motor shaft 6 by means of drivers 17. The pump housing 3b rests on the underside of the floating body 1 and is equipped with a strainer 18 to protect the suction opening of the impeller 3a against the ingress of foreign bodies. The pressure connection 3e of the pump housing 3b, to which a flexible pressure line 19 is connected, sits between the floats 1.
The base plate 7 of the motor housing and the pump housing 3b each terminate in a pipe socket 7a or 3d which surrounds the motor shaft 6 and which is provided with inner flanges 7b and 3e and connected to one another by screws 20. This arrangement is between the housing of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Motor and the pump created an indentation into which the floating bodies 1 enter. The reduction in stability caused by this indentation is compensated for by the support of the two housings with their outer edges on the floating bodies. The motor shaft 6 is enclosed by these pipe sockets 7a and 3d and is therefore protected against damage by floating objects. The interiors of the pipe sockets are open to each other.
The nozzle 7a of the base plate y has openings 21 which are partly in the water, partly above the water level. This prevents the water emerging from the pump housing 3b through the gap between the housing and the impeller from being pressed into the engine compartment. Through these openings 21, the overpressure of the air enclosed by the engine hood 10 generated by the engine heat can be balanced out against the outside air through the ball bearing 9, as can the negative pressure that occurs in the engine hood when the engine is stopped when the engine cools down.
The hollow extensions la and 3b do not need to have approximately the same dimensions selected in the exemplary embodiment, but can be of different lengths, regardless of whether the longer extension sits on the pump body or on the base plate. In any case, however, the pressure equalization openings 21 must be located in the approach passing through the water level.
With this arrangement, the motor shaft passes freely through the connecting lugs 7 and 3d of the motor base plate and the pump. Any stuffing box is avoided.
It should also be mentioned that the pump unit according to the invention, instead of the electric motor, is another drive machine, such as an internal combustion engine, and instead of a centrifugal pump, a pump of another type, e.g. B. a piston pump, capsule pump, screw pump, etc. can be obtained.
