Abstract
Se describen un método y un aparato para agitacion electromagnética de metales fundidos en un estado avanzado de solidificacion, tal como el que se puede utilizar en la colada continua de palanquillas o tochos de acero. Se proporcionan al menos un primer y un segundo agitador para generar un primer y un segundo campo magnético giratorio de una frecuencia diferente en torno a un eje de metal fundido bajo solidificacion. Los agitadores están dispuestos en torno al metal fundido con la suficiente proximidad entre sí de manera que sus respectivos campos magnéticos se superpongan para producir un campo magnético modulado. Los campos magnéticos de los respectivos agitadores pueden tener direcciones de rotacion ya sea comunes, u opuestas. La agitacion modulada producida por los campos magnéticos trae como resultado flujos primarios y secundarios oscilantes y, por lo tanto, turbulencia dentro del lote fundido, en la region en la cual la temperatura del material fundido en su eje central está por debajo del nivel de temperatura líquidus y se forma al menos el 10% del material sustancialmente solidificado. El flujo turbulento que crea este método de agitacion detiene la formacion de las estructuras cristalinas en el lote fundido y mezcla el material fundido enriquecido con soluto de la region central con el volumen del lote, lo cual posteriormente trae como resultado mejoras en la estructura de solidificacion y en la calidad interna general de los productos moldeados.
