Description

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a plug for blasting operations, for example mining operations whether underground or surface mining, rock breaking and other similar operations.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
In our Patent 2003/4007 we have described and claimed a plug having a cylindrical body which is radially resilient with respect to the inside surface of a bore hole, the inside surface of the body being frustoconical, and having a corresponding frustoconical element therein adapted, when drawn into the body by means of a screw accessible from the outside of the body of the bore hole, to be drawn into the body from the inner or explosive end thereof, to deform the body outwardly against the surface of the bore hole; the screw being adapted to draw the element into the body or to move the element out of the body for removal of the plug if desired.
In the amended specification we have referred to prior art brought t to our notice and have distinguished it form the invention defined in the amended claims.
It has been realised that the plug may be simplified in a material manner and it is an object of the invention to provide a very simple plug which is simpler, and cheaper, to manufacture and easy to use.
THE INVENTION
According to the invention a plug for blasting operations includes a cylindrical body which is radially resilient with respect to the inside surface of a bore hole, the inside surface of the body being frustoconical, and having a corresponding frustoconical element therein adapted, when drawn into the body by a rod, cord or the like attached to the element and accessible from the outside of the bore hole, to be drawn into the body from the inner or explosive end thereof, to deform the body outwardly against the surface of the bore hole.
In the case of a rod or stem or the like, it will be possible , not only to draw the element into the body but also , in the case of a misfire or other reason, to push the element in the opposite direction to relax and release the body. Using a cord, wire or other resilient member, it may be necessary to use a tool to relax the abutment of the cylindrical body against the wall of the bore hole but it may also be possible to use finger pressure.
The body may include a longitudinal slot to provide for expansion against the wall of the bore hole. The body may be made from a plastic which is softer than the material used for making the element.
EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION
An embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a transparent isometric view of a plug according to the invention in a relaxed mode;
Figures 2A to 2C are diagrammatic representations of the plug in a relaxed condition (2A), in position in a bore hole (2B) and in its expanded condition (2C);
Figure 3 is a plan view of the element or wedge;
Figures 4A and 4B are isometric views of the cylindrical body inside (4A) and outside (4B);
Figure 5 is plan view of the cylindrical body in its expanded state;
Figure 6 illustrates a number of possible interface means .
In Figure 1 the cylindrical body 10 is formed with a diameter greater than the diameter of the bore hole. It is squeezed to a smaller diameter suitable for insertion, and the frustoconical element 12 is then drawn into the body by pulling on a stem 14 in the direction of the arrow, thus expanding the body hard against the wall 16 of the bore hole 28 - see Figure 2B.
The element 12 includes a groove 20 for passage of fuses or cables and it may also be used as a guide with a corresponding formation in the body.
The body includes radial slots 24 for expansion movement.

Claims (4)

  1. CLAIMS: A plug for blasting operations including a cylindrical body that is radially resilient with respect to the inside surface of a bore hole, the inside surface of the body being frustoconical; and having a corresponding frustoconical element therein adapted, when drawn into the body by a rod, cord or the like attached to the element and accessible from the outside of the bore hole, to be drawn into the body from the inner or explosive end thereof, to deform the body outwardly against the surface of the bore hole.
  2. 2. The plug according to claim 1 which includes a longitudinal slot to provide for expansion against the wall of the bore hole.
  3. 3. The plug according to claim 1 or claim 2 in which the body is made from a plastic that is softer than the material used for making the element.
  4. 4, A plug substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings. Dated this 31 dayof August 2005 MORRISON ois INC. APPLICANTS’ PATENT ATTORNEYS A
