Definitions
- the present disclosure relates to a method for mechanochemical depolymerization of polyester.
- Polyester represented by polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
- PET polyethylene terephthalate
- the depolymerization method of polyester into a monomer is broadly divided, there are three representative methods: the hydrolysis method using water as a solvent, the alcohollysis method using alcohol as a solvent, and the glycolysis method using glycol as a solvent.
- the hydrolysis method includes, for example, a method of decomposing polyethylene terephthalate melt into terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol by reacting it with water and then reacting it with ammonium hydroxide (see Patent Document 1).
- This method has the advantage of not using glycol or alcohol for the reaction, but because the reaction occurs under high pressure conditions, it requires a special high pressure reactor.
- the alcohollysis method is a method of depolymerizing polyester by heating, for example, in an alcohol solvent (with a catalyst added as necessary) (see Patent Document 2 and Patent Document 3).
- This method has the advantage that, for example, when polyethylene terephthalate is depolymerized using methanol as a solvent, dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), a useful and easy-to-handle monomer, is directly produced through the depolymerization reaction, and the depolymerization reaction is also relatively fast.
- DMT dimethyl terephthalate
- the alcohol used as a solvent has a low boiling point and requires pressurization to proceed with the reaction (for example, reaction in methanol in a supercritical or subcritical state), thus requiring a special high-pressure reactor.
- the glycolysis method is a method of depolymerizing polyester by heating it in an excess alkylene glycol solvent with a depolymerization catalyst such as sodium carbonate to produce bis( ⁇ -hydroxyalkyl) terephthalate and ethylene glycol (Patent Document 4, and (see patent document 5).
- a depolymerization catalyst such as sodium carbonate
- ethylene glycol is used as a solvent
- bis( ⁇ -hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) is produced through a depolymerization reaction, and by adding methanol in the presence of a transesterification catalyst to perform a transesterification reaction, dimethyl Terephthalate (DMT) can be recovered.
- the glycolysis method can be used to react at normal pressure, but the reaction time is relatively long, so a shortening of the reaction time is required, and there is a problem in that the glycol in the solvent is heated for a long time and deteriorates.

- the content of polyester in the polyester waste may be 60% by weight to 100% by weight based on the total weight of the polyester waste. If the polyester content is less than 60% by weight, the amount of side-reactants and unrecyclable separation and purification waste is too large compared to the raw materials obtained through the depolymerization process, which may make it practically uneconomical.
- the waste may optionally be subjected to a pretreatment step of washing the waste before the depolymerization step and removing contaminants such as dye, contents, or dirt attached to the waste.

- the amount of decomposer can be 0.75 to 3.0 mol per 1.0 mol of dibasic acid contained in polyester, for example, a monovalent decomposer (e.g. hydroxyl In the case of sodium), it is appropriate to add 1.5 to 3.0 mol, and in the case of a divalent decomposition agent (e.g., calcium carbonate), it is appropriate to add 0.75 to 1.5 mol.
- a monovalent decomposer e.g. hydroxyl In the case of sodium
- a divalent decomposition agent e.g., calcium carbonate
- the reaction equation is PET (polyethylene terephthalate) + 2NaOH ⁇ TPA salt (disodium terephthalate) + EG (ethylene glycol), so 1 kg of PET For decomposition, 2 moles of NaOH (420 g) are required per mole of TPA.
- the amount of dye added during processing varies from 0.5% to 20% by weight (based on the weight of fabric (o.w.f.)) of the polyester fiber, so the amount of decomposer added is It is preferable that the amount is 2.0 mol or more per 1.0 mol of dibasic acid contained in polyester so that both dye decomposition and polyester fiber can be decomposed.
- the mechanochemical depolymerization method of polyester pulverizes polyester in the presence of a decomposer and simultaneously depolymerizes polyester using the heat generated by this, so it does not require a high-pressure reactor and is a batch method.
- the device can be configured as a continuous reactor. For example, after the raw materials are added, the inside of the reactor is replaced with nitrogen (N 2 ) to suppress side reactions, and the reaction can proceed in a nitrogen (N 2 ) atmosphere for the entire process time.
- Depolymerization can occur in a grinding reactor containing equipment capable of grinding polyester.
- the grinding reactor may include a rotating disk at the bottom. The disk grinds the polyester by rotation and causes friction between the polyester and the inner wall of the grinding reactor.
- the disk may be in the form of a mixer, for example, with blades attached to the surface.
- the grinding reactor may further include baffles on the inner wall to increase frictional heat generated by friction between the polyester and the inner wall of the grinding reactor.
- the heat may include grinding heat, friction heat, or both.
- the mechanochemical depolymerization method of polyester pulverizes polyester in the presence of a decomposer and simultaneously depolymerizes polyester using the heat generated by this, so it is a solvent-free reaction without adding a large amount of solvent. It can be done without applying additional heat from the outside other than the heat generated internally.
- the mechanochemical depolymerization method of polyester can be performed without adding a solvent such as water or ethylene glycol.
- the mechanochemical depolymerization method of polyester does not require separate heat control, input of a large amount of solvent to increase the uniformity of the reaction, or a separate heat source for the reaction, so the equipment configuration is simple and the investment cost is low. It is also advantageous from an environmental perspective because there is no separate treatment and disposal of solvents.
- dibasic acid which is a product of depolymerization, can be obtained as a salt in the form of paste, powder, or pellets, reducing the volume and making it easy to store and transport.
- depolymerization may be accomplished by rotating the disk at 500 rpm to 5000 rpm, for example, 700 rpm to 2500 rpm, or 1000 rpm to 1200 rpm. If the rotation speed of the disk during depolymerization is less than 500 rpm, pulverization is not effective and heat generation due to pulverization and friction may be insufficient, and if it exceeds 5000 rpm, heat generation due to pulverization and friction may be excessive.
- the internal temperature of the grinding reactor due to the generated heat may be 130 °C to 300 °C, for example, 170 °C to 280 °C, or 200 °C to 250 °C. If the internal temperature of the grinding reactor is less than 130°C, depolymerization efficiency may be reduced, and if it exceeds 300°C, depolymerization side reactants may be generated.
- Depolymerization may occur for 5 minutes to 120 minutes, 5 minutes to 60 minutes, or 10 minutes to 40 minutes.
- the depolymerization reaction time can be increased within the range of 120 minutes as the concentration of impurities including polyester dyes increases, the processing amount of polyester increases, and the temperature inside the grinding reactor decreases.
- the mechanochemical depolymerization method of polyester can separate and recover the alkylene glycol produced by vaporizing it using the heat generated during the depolymerization process.
- the mechanochemical depolymerization method of polyester pulverizes polyester in the presence of a decomposer and simultaneously depolymerizes the polyester using the heat generated by this, so it can proceed as a solvent-free reaction, and no chemicals are generated during the depolymerization process. Since the temperature inside the grinding reactor can reach up to 300°C due to the generated grinding heat and/or friction heat, the produced alkylene glycol can be separated and recovered by vaporizing it during depolymerization.
- the present invention is not limited to this, and heat may be additionally supplied from outside to vaporize alkylene glycol to separate and recover it.
- the depolymerization of polyester can be sufficiently progressed by the grinding heat and friction heat generated inside the grinding reactor, but the vaporization of alkylene glycol may be insufficient only by the grinding heat and friction heat generated inside the grinding reactor. In this case, external heat supply may be necessary.
- the mechanochemical depolymerization method of polyester involves adding alkylene glycol in an amount of 0% by weight or more, or 100% by weight or less, for example, 30% by weight to 95% by weight, or 50% by weight to 98% by weight, based on the total weight of alkylene glycol during the depolymerization process. Up to % by weight can be recovered. If the content of alkylene glycol that can be recovered during depolymerization is 0% by weight, alkylene glycol is mixed with the dibasic acid and discharged, so a separate process for separation before dissolution is required. If the content of alkylene glycol that can be recovered during depolymerization is 100% by weight, the produced dibasic acid Since alkylene glycol is not mixed, the dibasic acid can be immediately dissolved and proceed to the next process.
- the grinding reactor may further include an outlet for discharging vaporized alkylene glycol.
- Vaporized alkylene glycol may be under normal pressure conditions and can be recovered by adding nitrogen (N 2 ) and liquefying it in a condenser with a gas flow.
- the alkylene glycol is separated and the remaining dibasic acid can be obtained in the form of a solid salt.

- the method of separating alkylene glycol and dibasic acid salt produced by the depolymerization reaction is not particularly limited in the present invention, and an appropriate method can be selected depending on the target compound, for example, separation by distillation concentration method. can do.
- distillation concentration As a means for distillation concentration, all conventional distillation and concentration devices, such as a reduced-pressure continuous distillation device and a reduced-pressure batch type distillation device, can be used. Afterwards, a solid dibasic acid salt can be obtained through a drying process.
- decomposition agent used during depolymerization, it can be divided into hydrolysis method using alkali, alcohollysis method using alcohol, and glycolysis method using glycol, and the type of dibasic acid obtained accordingly also varies. .
- the obtained product may vary depending on the type of decomposition agent used in the depolymerization reaction.
- the type of decomposition agent used in the depolymerization reaction For example, when depolymerizing polyethylene terephthalate using ethylene glycol as a decomposition agent, bis( ⁇ -hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) can be obtained as a monomer, and when depolymerizing polyethylene glycol using propylene glycol as a decomposition agent, As a monomer, mainly bis( ⁇ -hydroxyethyl isopropyl)terephthalate (BHEPT) can be obtained.
- BHET bis( ⁇ -hydroxyethyl) terephthalate
- BHEPT bis( ⁇ -hydroxyethyl isopropyl)terephthalate

- dibasic acid or oligomeric ester compounds can be recovered using means such as filtration or distillation.
- ester compound of the dibasic acid or oligomer e.g., BHET

- filtration methods such as solid-liquid separation
- alcohol attached to the obtained powder-like crystal can be removed by washing with alcohol such as methanol or ethanol.
- the crystals of the dibasic acid salt can be dissolved in water (S2) and then mixed with an acid to cause a neutralization reaction to precipitate the dibasic acid (e.g., terephthalic acid) (S4).
- the precipitated dibasic acid can be recovered by separating water and solid-liquid using methods such as centrifugation (S5).
- the content of water added during the recovery process may be 3 to 10 weight per 1 weight of dibasic acid salt.
- the content of the acid supplied to separate the dibasic acid may be equal to or greater than the alkali metal contained in the dibasic acid salt, and the types of acids used at this time include inorganic acids such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and phosphoric acid, which are strong acids at pH 2, or formic acid.
- organic acids such as acetic acid and oxalic acid can be used, and among them, inorganic acids, especially hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, are suitable because they can reduce impurities in the monomers produced.
- the neutralization reaction temperature may be 20°C to 85°C, and the neutralization reaction may usually be completed within 10 minutes to 5 hours.
- the mechanochemical depolymerization method of polyester may optionally further include the step of removing impurities contained in polyester molded products or waste from an aqueous solution of dibasic acid (S3).
- the means for removing impurities is not particularly limited, and any appropriate technique, device, etc. can be used.
- solid contents such as resins other than polyester (polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, etc.) left in an unreacted state and decomposition agents such as insoluble alkali metals can be removed using a mesh or the like.
- decomposition agents such as insoluble alkali metals
- dyes, fillers, etc. cannot be removed from mesh, etc., they can be removed by centrifugation, filtration using an adsorbent such as activated carbon, etc.
- a step of selectively recrystallizing the dibasic acid crystals to a commercializable particle size (100 ⁇ m or more) may be further included (S6).
- the recrystallization method is not particularly limited, and may be performed, for example, under high temperature and high pressure conditions after mixing dibasic acid crystals with water.
- Esterification is the reaction of the recovered monomer, dibasic acid, with alkylene glycol, for example, terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol.
- alkylene glycol for example, terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol.
- This reaction can be carried out without a catalyst, but can also be carried out in the presence of catalysts such as alkaline earth metal compounds such as magnesium and calcium, and metal compounds such as titanium, zinc, and manganese, which are well known as transesterification catalysts.
- the product of the esterification process can be polycondensed to produce a recycled polyester resin.

- Compounds that promote crystallization include, for example, polyhexamethylene terephthalate, inorganic compounds, higher aliphatic compounds, polyether-based compounds, polyolefin-based thermoplastic resins such as polypropylene and polyethylene, and these compounds are recycled polyester resins. It can be added at 1 ppm to 100 ppm.
- polycondensation catalysts Compounds such as germanium, antimony, titanium, and aluminum can be used as polycondensation catalysts.
- the addition amount of the polycondensation catalyst may be 2 ppm to 800 ppm, for example, 4 ppm to 500 ppm, based on the weight of the catalyst metal element relative to the total weight of the dibasic acid component.
- recycled polyester contains, as stabilizers, phosphoric acid esters such as trimethyl phosphate, triethyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, and triethyl phosphonoacetate, phosphorous acid esters such as triphenyl phosphite and tris dodecyl phosphite, methyl acid phosphate, and dibutyl. It may include phosphorus compounds such as phosphate, monobutyl phosphate, phosphoric acid, phosphorous acid, hypophosphorous acid, and polyphosphoric acid.
- the amount of the stabilizer added may be 1000 ppm or less, for example, 500 ppm or less, or 300 ppm or less, based on the weight of phosphorus element in the stabilizer, based on the total weight of the recycled polyester.
- the mechanochemical depolymerization method of polyester pulverizes the polyester and simultaneously depolymerizes the polyester with the heat generated thereby, using the dibasic acid and alkylene glycol obtained thereby.
- the color of the recycled polyester produced may have an L value of 45 or more, for example, 60 or more, or 65 to 95.
- the L, a, and b color systems are commonly used internationally as standards for color evaluation of polyester. This color value is one of the color systems for standardizing color measurements and describes recognizable colors and color differences.
- L is the lightness factor and a and b are color measurements. Among them, the L value refers to a numerical factor representing brightness, and is a very important value in the manufacture of textiles, fabrics, or clothes. Additionally, a positive b value means yellow discoloration, a negative value means blue discoloration, a positive a value means red discoloration, and a negative value means green discoloration.
- L, a, and b values are defined in the Korean Industrial Standard (KS) related to color measurement in KS A 0061, 0063, 0064, 0065, 0066, 0067, 0084, 0085, 0089, 0114, etc., for example, L, a , and b values can be determined by removing 50 g of the polyester resin to be measured, removing moisture from the air, placing it in a colorimeter model SA-2000, measuring the color 10 times, and setting the average value as the standard value.
- KS Korean Industrial Standard
- the L value of recycled polyester is related to the purity of the recycled dibasic acid and alkylene glycol. For example, as the amount of impurities or matting agent such as titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) increases, the L value decreases. If the L value is less than 45, the content of impurities is too high, so the color may be colored after polymerization or fiberization, or many side reactions may occur during polymerization, so it may not be used as a high value-added material, and its main use is the same as mechanically recycled polyester. Since it is applied, it may be meaningless. On the other hand, when the L value exceeds 95, it is a physical property that is difficult to achieve even with existing virgin materials. In order to achieve this value through regeneration, unit production volume and processes such as decolorization, addition of a purification process, or increasing residence time are required. Economic feasibility may decrease due to increased costs.

- terephthalic acid (TPA) salt and ethylene glycol (EG) are separated into solid and liquid using a decanter equipment. Liquid ethylene glycol (EG) is recovered by removing impurities through distillation, and solid terephthalic acid (TPA) salt is dissolved in water. Dissolve and remove impurities.
- TPA Terephthalic acid
- NaOH sodium hydroxide
- TPA terephthalic acid
- Example 1 The physical properties of terephthalic acid prepared in Example 1, Example 2, and Comparative Example 1 were measured, and the results are shown in Table 1.
- rTPA regenerated terephthalic acid
- rTPA After collecting the rTPA sample and distributing it in a beaker, rTPA was stirred with a 2 N KOH aqueous solution at 300 rpm to 500 rpm for 1 hour until completely dissolved, and a UV-VIS spectrometer was used to measure the transmittance of the solution. After correcting the transmittance to 100% by adding only the 2 N KOH solution to the cell, rTPA completely dissolved in 2 N KOH is collected and the transmittance measurement is repeated three times at 40 nm to calculate the average transmittance value.
- Examples 1 and 2 show similar characteristics compared to Comparative Example 1. This is because the Comparative Example does not use a solvent and EG decomposed by depolymerization is recovered in the depolymerization process. This can be said to be a more economical method.
- the present disclosure relates to a method for mechanochemical depolymerization of polyester, which does not require additional processes such as washing, grinding, or processing before inputting waste collected from industry or general households into a chemical process, and is not limited to the type of waste. It is applicable and does not require the introduction of a large amount of additional solvent or a separate heat source for the reaction, so the equipment configuration is simple and the investment cost is low. It is also advantageous from an environmental perspective because there is no treatment or disposal of solvent.

Abstract
Description

또한, 폴리에스테르 공급 원료가 섬유인 경우 가공 중 투입되는 염료의 량은 폴리에스테르 섬유 중량의 0.5 중량% 내지 20 중량%(on the weight of fabric(o.w.f.)
