Abstract

An exemplary soap/sanitizing dispenser includes a housing; a processor; memory; an object sensor; a receptacle for receiving a refill unit including a container, a closure, and a valve; a valve post to open the valve; a fluid reservoir for holding liquid soap/sanitizer including a liquid inlet and/or air outlet passage and a liquid outlet passage; a level sensor for sensing the level of liquid in the reservoir; and a pump in fluid communication with the liquid outlet passage. Logic is stored in the memory for determining whether a selected volume of fluid of greater than 10 milliliters of liquid is in the fluid reservoir, causing the pump to operate when an object is detected by the object sensor when the selected level of liquid in the fluid reservoir is above a selected level, and causing the pump to not pump fluid if the liquid level in the fluid reservoir is below a selected level even if an object is detected by the object sensor.
