Abstract

An apparatus (100) for creating a book form is disclosed. The apparatus (100) includes one or more nipping rollers (102) to pass a running web of folded paper (120). Further, the apparatus (100) includes a gluing apparatus (104) to apply glue at one or more pre-defined positions on the running web of folded paper (120) based at least on the desired dimensions of the book form. The apparatus (100) also includes a cutting cylinder (106) to cut the running web horizontally based on the desired dimensions of the book form and a folding and collecting cylinder (108) to collect the cut portion along its perimeter. Further, the apparatus (100) includes a haw cylinder (110) to fold the cut portion from the middle facilitating in pasting a first edge of the cut portion over a second edge of the cut portion to create the book form of desired dimensions.

Description

AN APPARATUS AND A METHOD FOR CREATING A BOOK FORM
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[ 0001 ] The present invention generally relates to manufacturing a book . In particular, the present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for creating a book form for manufacturing a book .
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[ 0002 ] Manufacturing a book generally involves steps of creating a book form of the printed sheet of paper and binding the created book form . For creating a book form one or more running webs of printed papers are used based on the required number of pages in the book, such as a 16-page book may use 2 running webs of printed pages and a 32-page book may use 4 running webs of printed pages . Typically, each of the running web of printed paper is folded three times including a first fold by a former, a second fold by a first cylinder and a third fold by a second cylinder . The third fold is referred to as a quarter fold and plays an essential part in the binding of the book . The quarter fold allows stacking of the complete book form together and picking of the complete book form during binding .
[ 0003 ] However, the quarter folding of the running web of printed paper requires a separate unit coupled to the main apparatus . Further, the quarter folding unit makes the apparatus expensive and slows the pace of creating the book form . Additionally, the quarter folding unit also makes the system bulky by increasing the size and weight of the apparatus for creating the book form for manufacturing the book . [ 0004 ] In light of the above, there is a need for an improved apparatus and a method for creating a book form for manufacturing a book .
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[ 0005 ] In an embodiment of the present invention, an apparatus for creating a book form is disclosed . The apparatus includes one or more nipping rollers to pas s a running web of folded paper . Further, the apparatus includes a gluing apparatus to apply glue at one or more pre-defined positions on the running web of folded paper based at least on the desired dimensions of the book form after pas sing through the one or more nipping rollers . The apparatus also includes a cutting cylinder to cut the running web horizontally based on the desired dimensions of the book form and a folding and collecting cylinder to collect the cut portion of the running web of folder paper along the perimeter of the folding and collecting cylinder . Further, the apparatus includes a j aw cylinder to fold the cut portion of the running web is folded from the middle facilitating in pasting a first edge of the cut portion over a second edge of the cut portion to create the book form of desired dimensions .
[ 0006] In an embodiment of the present invention, the apparatus also includes at least one former to receive a running web of printed paper and is configured to make a first fold in the running web of printed paper to form the running web of folder paper .
[ 0007 ] In an embodiment of the present invention, the gluing apparatus includes a glue gun and a control panel , the control panel to control the operation of the glue gun for applying the glue of a pre-defined thickness and a pre-defined length on the running web of folded paper . Further, the pre-defined thickness is 2mm and the predefined length is 200mm .
[ 0008 ] In an embodiment of the present invention, the apparatus also includes the jaw cylinder having one or more jaws to clip the cut portion of the running web of folded paper from the perimeter of the folding and collecting cylinder to fold the cut portion .
[ 0009] In an embodiment of the present invention, the first edge and the second edge correspond to a top horizontal edge and a bottom horizontal edge , respectively . Further, the book form is an L-shaped folder of paper having glue on the top horizontal edge and a left vertical edge .
[ 0010 ] In an embodiment of the present invention, the book form is supplied to a binding unit for binding the book form to manufacture a book of desired dimensions .
[ 0011 ] An embodiment of the present invention discloses , a method for creating a book form . The method includes passing a running web of folded paper through one or more nipping rollers . Further, the method includes applying glue via a gluing apparatus at one or more predefined positions on the running web of folded paper based at least on the desired dimensions of the book form after pas sing through the one or more nipping rollers . The method also includes cutting the running web horizontally based on the desired dimensions of the book form . [ 0012 ] In an embodiment of the present invention, the method includes receiving a running web of printed paper . Further, the method includes making a first fold in the running web of printed paper to form the running web of folder paper .
[ 0013 ] In an embodiment of the present invention, the method includes controlling the operation of a glue gun for applying the glue of a pre-defined thicknes s and a pre-defined length on the running web of folded paper . Further, the pre-defined thickness is 2mm and the predefined length is 200mm .
[ 0014 ] In an embodiment of the present invention, the method includes clipping the cut portion of the running web from the perimeter of the folding and collecting cylinder to fold the cut portion .

Consequently, the apparatus eliminates the need for a quarter folding unit . Thus , the apparatus is compact , fast and cost-effective .

The apparatus 100 may include one or more nipping roller 102 , a gluing apparatus 104 , a cutting cylinder 106, a folding and collecting cylinder 108 , a j aw cylinder 110 and a paddlewheel 112 .
[ 0024 ] In an embodiment of the present invention, the book form may be understood as an ordered stack of printed pages ready for binding and manufacturing a book . The printed paper may be formed by printing on a running web of paper by one or more printing apparatuses and techniques known in the art . In an embodiment of the present invention, the book form may have standard dimensions of 210mm X 260mm . In another embodiment of the present invention, the book form may have dimensions based on the user preferences and requirement s . [ 0025 ] In an embodiment of the present invention, the printed paper may be received via a former 114 . The former 114 may be triangular in shape and may be located above a plurality of nip rollers 118 of a nip rolling assembly . The nip rollers 118 may be understood as pressure rollers to push a web towards the running direction and maintain the tension of the web . The web may be understood as a moving printing paper pas sing through various assemblies and unit s to undergo dif ferent transformations for creating the book form . Further, the former 114 may be configured to make a first fold in the running web of printed paper via one or more lead-in rollers 116 . The lead-in rollers 116 may be understood as bending roller to make the first fold in the running web of printed paper to form the running web of folder paper 120 .
[ 0026] In an embodiment of the present invention, one or more running webs of printed papers may be used for creating a book form based on the required number of pages in the book, such as a 16-page book may use 2 running webs of printed papers and a 32-page book may use 4 running webs of printed papers . In an embodiment of the present invention, a compensator roller 122 may be used for directing various running webs in a single direction to combine one or more running webs of printed papers .

The one or more pre-defined positions may correspond to the edges of the desired book form and may include top horizontal edge, bottom horizontal edge, left vertical edge, right vertical edge or a combination thereof .

In an embodiment of the present invention, the control panel may turn ON and turn OFF the glue gun based at least on the desired dimensions of the book form . In an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, the pre-defined thicknes s may be 2 mm and the pre-defined length may be 200 mm .

The cutting cylinder 106 may cut the running web of folded paper 120 based on the desired dimensions of the book form . Further, the cutting cylinder 106 may have a pair of knives at the end of the diameter of the cutting cylinder 106 . In an embodiment of the present invention, the diameter of the cutting cylinder 106 may be 1092mm . In another embodiment of the present invention, the diameter of the cutting cylinder 106 may depend on the desired dimensions of the book form .
[ 0032 ] In an embodiment of the present invention, the folding and collecting cylinder 108 may be configured to collect the cut portion of the running web along the perimeter of the folding and collecting cylinder 108 . The cut portion of the running web may be collected via one or more pins of the folding and collecting cylinder 108 . Further, the folding and collecting cylinder 108 may also include one or more belts to pres s the cut portion of the running web against the perimeter of the cylinder . Additionally, the folding and collecting cylinder 108 may also include one or more blades along the perimeter of the folding and collecting cylinder 108 . The one or more blades may be configured to move outward for a pre-defined length from the middle of the cut portion of the running web . In an embodiment of the present invention, the pre-defined length may be 10mm .
[ 0033 ] In an embodiment of the present invention, the j aw cylinder 110 may include one or more j aws . Each of the one or more j aws may be configured to clip the cut portion of the running web from the one or more blades on the perimeter of the folding and collecting cylinder 108 . The cut portion may be clipped from the middle to fold the cut portion of the running web for pasting the first edge of the cut portion over the second edge of the cut portion to create the book form . In an embodiment of the present invention, the first edge and the second edge may correspond to a top horizontal edge and a bottom horizontal edge, respectively . Upon folding on the jaw cylinder 110 , the cut portion may form an L-shaped folder of papers having glue on the top horizontal edge and the left vertical edge .
[ 0034 ] In an embodiment of the present invention, a photo-electric cell 124 may be used to monitor the presence of the book form . Photo-electric cell 124 may be understood as a copy detector and is an integral part of the present invention . The photo-electric cell 124 may be configured to stop the apparatus 100 if it doesn ' t sense a book form during operation .
[ 0035 ] In an embodiment of the present invention, the paddlewheel 112 may be configured to receive the book form from the jaw cylinder 110 . Further, the paddlewheel 112 may be configured to deliver the book form via a delivery belt 126 .
[ 0036] Fi gure 2 illustrates a book form 202 with applied glue 204 in accordance with an embodiment of the invention . In an embodiment of the present invention, the delivered book form 202 may have glue 204 applied on one or more edges for binding . [ 0037 ] In an embodiment of the present invention, the delivered book form may be supplied to a binding unit (not shown ) . Further, the binding unit may be configured to bind the book form to manufacture the book of desired dimensions . It may be understood that the binding unit may employ one or more apparatus and techniques known in the art for binding the book form to manufacture the book .
[ 0038 ] In operation, the one or more nipping rollers 102 may receive a running web of folded paper 120 . After pas sing the running web of folded paper 120 passes through the one or more nipping rollers , the gluing apparatus 104 may apply glue at one or more pre-defined positions on the running web of folded paper 120 . The gluing apparatus 104 may apply glue based at least on the desired dimensions of the book form . Further, the cutting cylinder 106 may cut the running web horizontally based on the desired dimensions of the book form . Next , the folding and collecting cylinder 108 may receive the cut portion of the running web along the perimeter of the folding and collecting cylinder 108 . Next , the jaw cylinder 110 may be configured to clip the cut portion of the running web from the perimeter of the folding and collecting cylinder 108 . The cut portion may be clipped from the middle to fold the cut portion of the running web for pasting the first edge of the cut portion over the second edge of the cut portion to create the book form . In an embodiment of the present invention, the book form may be supplied to a binding unit for binding the book form to manufacture a book of desired dimensions . [ 0039] Accordingly, the present invention provides the following effects or advantages .
[ 0040 ] The invention provides a method and apparatus 100 for creating a book form for manufacturing books at a high rate . Further, the apparatus 100 includes a gluing apparatus 104 to apply glue on the running web of folded paper 120 after pas sing through the nipping rollers 102 to eliminate the need for a quarter folding in the manufacturing of a book . Consequently, the apparatus 100 eliminates the need for a quarter folding unit . Thus , the apparatus 100 is compact , fast and cost-effective .
[ 0041 ] Whil e the exemplary embodiments of the present invention are described and illustrated herein, it will be appreciated that they are merely illustrative . It will be understood by those skilled in the art that various modifications in form and detail may be made therein without departing from or of fending the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims .

Claims

Claims :
1. An apparatus (100) for creating a book form, the apparatus (100) comprising: one or more nipping rollers (102) to pass a running web of folded paper (120) ; a gluing apparatus (104) to apply glue at one or more pre-defined positions on the running web of folded paper (120) based at least on the desired dimensions of the book form after passing through the one or more nipping rollers (102) ; a cutting cylinder (106) to cut the running web horizontally based on the desired dimensions of the book form; and a folding and collecting cylinder (108) to collect the cut portion of the running web of folder paper along the perimeter of the folding and collecting cylinder (108) ; and a jaw cylinder (110) to fold the cut portion of the running web of folded paper (120) from the middle facilitating in pasting a first edge of the cut portion over a second edge of the cut portion to create the book form of desired dimensions.
2. The apparatus (100) as claimed in claim 1, further comprises at least one former (114) to receive a running web of printed paper and configured to make a first fold in the running web of printed paper to form the running web of folder paper (120) .

The apparatus (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the gluing apparatus (104) includes a glue gun and a control panel to control the operation of the glue gun for applying the glue of a pre-defined thicknes s and a pre-defined length on the running web of folder paper and wherein the pre-defined thickness is 2mm and the pre-defined length is 200mm .
4 . The apparatus ( 100 ) as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the jaw cylinder ( 110 ) has one or more jaws to clip the cut portion of the running web of folder paper from the perimeter of the folding and collecting cylinder ( 108 ) to fold the cut portion .

The apparatus ( 100 ) as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first edge and the second edge correspond to a top horizontal edge and a bottom horizontal edge , respectively, further the book form is an L-shaped folder of paper having glue on the top horizontal edge and a left vertical edge and wherein the book form is supplied to a binding unit for binding the book form to manufacture a book of desired dimensions .

A method for creating a book form, the method comprising : pas sing a running web of folded paper through one or more nipping rollers ; applying glue via a gluing apparatus at one or more pre-defined positions on the running web of folded paper based at least on the desired dimensions of the book form after pas sing through the one or more nipping rollers ; cutting the running web horizontally based on the desired dimensions of the book form; collecting the cut portion of the running web of folder paper along the perimeter of the folding and collecting cylinder; and folding the cut portion of the running web of folder paper from the middle facilitating in pasting a first edge of the cut portion over a second edge of the cut portion to create the book form of desired dimensions .
7 . The method as claimed in claim 6 , further comprises : receiving a running web of printed paper; and making a first fold in the running web of printed paper to form the running web of folder paper .
8 . The method as claimed in claim 6, further comprises controlling the operation of a glue gun for applying the glue of a pre-defined thickness and a pre-defined length on the running web of folder paper and wherein the predefined thickness is 2mm and the pre-defined length is 200mm .
9 . The method as claimed in claim 6 , further comprises : clipping the cut portion of the running web of folder paper from the perimeter of the folding and collecting cylinder to fold the cut portion .

The method as claimed in claim 6 , wherein the first edge and the second edge correspond to a top horizontal edge and a bottom horizontal edge, respectively, further the book form is an L-shaped folder of papers having glue on the top horizontal edge and a left vertical edge and supplying the book form to a binding unit for binding the book form to manufacture a book of desired dimensions .
