For example, regarding fishes, the amount depends on at least the next parame- ters: species of fish, size or size distribution of indi vidual fishes, temperature of water, and a contact time of the active agent and fishes.
In an embodiment, the residence time of the species under influence of the active agent is in range of 5 min - 30 min. In an embodiment, the residence time is in range of 10 min - 15 min.
In an experiment, white fishes (Coregonus lavaretus) and trouts (Salmo trutta m. lacustris), weight 1.5 kg, were treated in water (10 °C) containing 0.75 - 0.5 weight-% of Dercinate 50 TO for 10 minutes without causing any prob lems to the fishes.
It is to be noted that white fish is an extremely sensi tive species to formalin - in such an extent that formalin treatment usually causes death of white fish.
In another experiment, fish eggs were treated in water (1 °C - 10 °C) containing 1 - 2 weight-% of Dercinate 50 TO for 10 minutes without causing any problems to the fish eggs.
In an embodiment, water is not changed or circulated through the filtering element during the residence time of the species under influence of the active agent. However, the water may be circulated or moved actively in the water basin during said influence of the active agent. In anoth er embodiment, water is changed or circulated through the filtering element 1 during the residence time of the spe cies under influence of the active agent, and the concen tration of the active agent is controlled, if necessary. In still another embodiment, water is changed during the residence time of the species under influence of the ac tive agent by feeding fresh water from outside of the aqua farming system 100, draining water from the water basin, and adding the active agent in order to keep its concen tration on desired level.
In an embodiment, the treating of the the farmed species with the active agent takes place in a separate bathing bucket or like. The farmed species to be treated are transferred to the bathing bucket just for the treatment, and then removed from the bathing bucket.
In an embodiment, the aqua farming system 100 comprises a gas tube 7 that is connected to a gas source (not shown) for feeding oxygenous gas, such as air, in the water. This way the oxygen concentration of water lowered to the sec ond water level WL 2 can be kept such a level that well-
being of the species can be guaranteed in the water basin even the amount of water is low.
In an embodiment, alkali metal salt of rosin or alkaline- earth metal salt of rosin for is/are used for treatment of Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (ICH) and/or preventing ICH infestation. ICH is a parasitic ciliate that can infect most freshwater fish species. ICH causes a disease common ly referred to as white spot disease.
In an embodiment, alkali metal salt of rosin or alkaline- earth metal salt of rosin for is/are used for treatment of Ichthyobodo necator (Costia necatrix) and/or preventing infestation thereof. Costia necatrix is a protozoan that attaches to the skin and gills of sweet water fish and in troduces severe slimy covers often leading to death due to the lack of oxygen.
In an embodiment, alkali metal salt of rosin or alkaline- earth metal salt of rosin for is/are used for treatment of Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Salmon louse) and/or preventing infestation thereof. Salmon louse is a parasite living mostly on salmon but is also sometimes found on the three- spined stickleback. Salmon louse can cause physical damage to the fish's fins, skin erosion, constant bleeding, and open wounds creating pathways for other pathogens. If ex isting large populations on a fish, Salmon louse as such can lead to death.
In an embodiment, alkali metal salt of rosin or alkaline- earth metal salt of rosin for is/are used for treatment and/or preventing of diseases caused by viruses, such as enveloped viruses. Such diseases include, for example, In fectious Haematopoietic Necrosis (IHN), Viral Haemorrhagic Septicaemia (VHS), or Infectious Salmon Anemia (ISA). In an embodiment, alkali metal salt of rosin or alkaline-
earth metal salt of rosin for is/are used for treatment of at least one of Pancreas Disease (PD) and Sleeping Disease (SD) caused by salmonid alphavirus (SAV).
EXAMPLE 1
Figure 2 illustrates results of Example 1. TOS based sodi um salt of rosin, Dercinate 50 TO, named as D-rosin in figure, was tested with quantitative polymerase chain re action (qPCR) method against enveloped virus, human corona virus with 1 wt.-% concentration. Cell viability (absorb ance on wave number 570) is shown on Y-axis.
Cells that were in contact with active ingredient (1 % D- rosin) were even more viable than reference group (Cell control).
"Virus control" is showing viability of cells exposed to the virus and without the treatment with the TOS based so dium salt of rosin.
The virus was totally deactivated in 5 minutes.
EXAMPLE 2
Young Rainbow trouts, Oncorhynchus mykiss, weighing about 5 grams each, were infested by Ichthyophthirius multifili- is. Ten such fishes were transferred from a basin into a bathing bucket filled with water containing 1 wt.-% Der cinate 50 TO. After 10 minutes of bathing the parasites had left gills and skin of fishes. Water temperature was 20 °C.
