The invention relates to a method for operating a fuel cell stack with the features of the preamble of claim 1. The invention also relates to a fuel cell stack that is suitable for carrying out the proposed method or can be operated according to this method, and a fuel cell system with such a fuel cell stack.
Stand der Technik State of the art
Fuel cells are electrochemical energy converters and are used in mobile and stationary applications. With the help of fuel cells, the chemical reaction energy of a continuously supplied fuel, for example hydrogen, and an oxidizing agent, usually oxygen, is converted into electrical energy. To increase performance, several fuel cells are usually arranged or stacked one on top of the other, so that they form a fuel cell stack or “stack”. The individual fuel cells in a stack are supplied with the required reaction gases in the direction of the stack via media channels and transversely to the direction of the stack via distribution structures connected to the media channels.
The electrochemical reaction in the fuel cells is not only associated with the generation of electrical energy, but also produces heat and water. The fuel cells therefore have to be cooled. The fuel cell stack is therefore usually connected to a cooling circuit for cooling. The connection is also made in the stacking direction via media channels and transversely to the stacking direction via distributor structures connected to the media channels. In order to form the media channels, the individual fuel cells have openings which are brought into overlap when stacked, so that openings lying one above the other form a media channel. The sealing can be effected via intermediate seals. To form the distributor structures, thin stamped metal plates can be arranged between two fuel cells, which are joined so that they enclose a cavity to which a cooling medium can be applied. On their sides facing away from the cavity, the metal plates each form a distributor structure for a reaction gas.
To ensure the media supply to the fuel cells of a fuel cell stack, the media pressure in the media channels can be monitored. The monitoring can be carried out using an external sensor system or a sensor system integrated into the fuel cell stack. For example, US 2005/0282060 A1 discloses a fuel cell stack in which at least one measuring or sensor element is integrated into an end plate of the fuel cell stack.
The present invention is concerned with the task of making the monitoring of the media supply in a fuel cell stack simpler and more cost-effective. In particular, it should be possible to dispense with the use of a separate sensor system.
To solve the problem, the method with the features of claim 1 and the fuel cell stack with the features of claim 5 are proposed. Advantageous developments of the invention can be found in the respective dependent claims. Furthermore, a fuel cell system with a fuel cell stack according to the invention is specified.
Offenbarung der Erfindung Disclosure of Invention
In the proposed method for operating a fuel cell stack, a large number of fuel cells in a stacked arrangement are supplied with at least one medium, in particular with fuel, air and/or a cooling medium, via a plurality of media channels formed in the fuel cell stack. provided. Furthermore, the pressure of the at least one medium is determined. According to the invention, the pressure of the medium is determined with the aid of an end plate of the fuel cell stack designed as a pressure sensor. A separate pressure sensor can thus be dispensed with. The number of parts and the costs are reduced accordingly. At the same time, the space requirement is reduced.
The term "end plate" provides information about the position of the plate in the fuel cell stack. Accordingly, an end plate forms the end of a fuel cell stack, namely—depending on the stacking or stacking direction—the lower or the upper end. The final position of the end plate can deviate from this, depending on the orientation of the fuel cell stack at the installation site. As a rule, a fuel cell stack is framed by two end plates, so that it has an “upper” and a “lower” end plate. The lower end plate is generally used to connect the fuel cell stack to an anode submodule, via which the fuel cell stack can be supplied with anode gas.
A pressure sensor for pressure monitoring can be integrated into the anode submodule. This measures the static and dynamic pressure. However, the dynamic pressure depends on several factors, in particular the exact sensor position and the number of fuel cells, as this determines the mass flow through the fuel cell stack. The dynamic pressure varies accordingly, so that a conversion must be made.
In order to avoid this, it is proposed within the scope of this invention that essentially only the static pressure is determined. The pressure in the region of the upper end plate is preferably determined in order to restrict it to the static pressure. Because in the area of the upper end plate, the speeds of the media conducted through the fuel cell stack are so low that a dynamic component can hardly be measured. The measurement is therefore limited to the static pressure. This means that the upper of two end plates enclosing the fuel cell stack is preferably used to form the pressure sensor.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the pressure of the medium results from a deformation of the end plate designed as a pressure sensor determined. The pressure can then be determined from the deformation energy. Such a pressure sensor can be designed in a comparatively simple manner. In order to locally limit the deformation of the end plate, it is proposed that the pressure of the medium be determined from the deformation of at least one membrane-like component integrated in the end plate. This must be arranged in such a way that it is subjected to the pressure of the medium. The at least one membrane-like component can then be used to record and/or transmit a pressure signal.
The pressure of the medium can optionally be determined in the area of a media channel serving for the inflow or outflow of the medium. The media channel serving for the inlet or outlet is delimited by the end plate designed as a pressure sensor, so that the pressure of the medium can be determined via the end plate. If the end plate forms a plurality of pressure sensors, the pressure can be determined both in a media channel serving for the inlet and for the outlet of the medium. For this purpose, several membrane-like components are preferably integrated into the end plate designed as a pressure sensor.
The fuel cell stack for a fuel cell system that is also proposed to solve the task mentioned at the beginning comprises a large number of fuel cells in a stacked arrangement, which can be supplied with at least one medium, in particular with fuel, air and/or a cooling medium, via a number of media channels formed in the fuel cell stack. The fuel cell stack also includes at least one end plate designed as a pressure sensor. Because the end plate itself forms a pressure sensor, a separate pressure sensor can be dispensed with. The number of parts and the costs for manufacturing the fuel cell stack decrease accordingly. In addition, the installation space requirement of the fuel cell stack can be reduced by eliminating a separate pressure sensor.
The fuel cell stack preferably has two end plates between which the fuel cells are arranged. A first endplate, the lower endplate, forms the base of the fuel cell stack. A second end plate, the upper end plate, closes off the top of the fuel cell stack. The upper of two end plates enclosing the fuel cell stack is preferably designed as a pressure sensor. Because in the area of the upper end plate the velocities of the media routed through the fuel cell stack are so low that dynamic components can hardly be measured when determining the pressure. The pressure determination can thus be limited to the static pressure. In contrast to the dynamic pressure, the static pressure can be determined independently of the number of lines and/or the respective installation situation. In particular, no conversion is required. The pressure determination is thus simplified.
The proposed fuel cell stack is particularly suitable for carrying out the method according to the invention described above or can be operated according to this method. The same advantages can thus be achieved with the aid of the proposed fuel cell stack as with the aid of the method according to the invention described above.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, at least one membrane-like component is integrated into the end plate designed as a pressure sensor. The integrated membrane-like component can be used to record and/or transmit a pressure signal. The formation of the end plate as a pressure sensor can be simplified in this way.
The at least one membrane-like component is preferably arranged in the region of a media channel serving for the inflow or outflow of the medium. Furthermore, the membrane-like component preferably delimits the respective media channel, so that the pressure prevailing in the media channel is applied to the membrane-like component. If the end plate designed as a pressure sensor has more than just one membrane-like component, these can be arranged on both the inlet and outlet sides.
Furthermore, the at least one membrane-like component is preferably arranged on a side of the end plate designed as a pressure sensor that faces the fuel cells. The associated media channel through the fuel cell stack therefore ends with the membrane-like component. The membrane-like component can also serve as a seal. This further simplifies the construction of the fuel cell stack. Since the proposed fuel cell stack is preferably used in a fuel cell system, a fuel cell system with a fuel cell stack according to the invention is also proposed. The fuel cell stack is preferably connected to an anode submodule of the fuel cell system via a lower end plate. In this case, the upper end plate arranged at the other end forms the at least one pressure sensor. This has the advantage that the pressure determined using the pressure sensor can essentially be limited to the static pressure.
The pressure of any medium conducted through the fuel cell stack can be determined with the aid of the described invention. In particular, the medium can be a fuel, air and/or a cooling medium. The invention can be implemented both on the anode side and on the cathode side. Alternatively or additionally, the invention can be implemented in the area of a cooling circuit that runs through the fuel cell stack.
Diese zeigen: The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings. These show:

Ausführliche Beschreibung der Zeichnungen Detailed description of the drawings
FIG. 1 shows an example of a possible structure of a fuel cell stack 1 according to the invention. This comprises a multiplicity of fuel cells 2 in a stacked arrangement. The fuel cell stack 1 is bordered by an end plate 4, 5 at its upper and lower end. Media channels 3 for supplying media to the individual fuel cells 2 extend between the end plates 4, 5, and the media can in particular be a fuel, air and/or a cooling medium. The media channels 3 shown in FIG. 1 are used for the inflow and outflow of a fuel or the inflow and outflow of the anode gas. The anode gas is fed in via an inlet 7 and discharged via an outlet 8 . The inlet 7 and the outlet 8 can be arranged directly on the lower end plate 5 . Alternatively, they may form part of an anode sub-module 9 located below the lower end plate 5 (see dashed lines in Figure 1). The anode submodule 9 can contain other components required on the anode side, in particular a metering valve, a jet pump, a water separator, a water reservoir, a drain valve and/or a purge valve.
The upper end plate 4 of the fuel cell stack 1 shown delimits the media channels 3 used for the inflow and outflow of anode gas. At the same time, the pressure in the media channels 3 can be monitored with the aid of the upper end plate 4 . This is because the upper end plate 4 forms at least one pressure sensor.
As shown by way of example in FIG. 2, a membrane-like component 6 can be integrated in each case in the upper end plates 4 in the area of the media channels 3 . The pressure prevailing in the respective media channel 3 is then applied to these. With the help of the membrane-like components 6, a pressure signal can be recorded and forwarded, in particular to an evaluation unit (not shown). The pressure can thus be monitored without a separate pressure sensor.
