Description

COMPOSITIONS FOR USE AS EYELINER AND AN EYELASH ADHESIVE
FIELD
[0001 ] The present invention relates to cosmetic compositions. More specifically, the present invention relates to compositions for use as an eyeliner and false eyelash adhesive.
BACKGROUND
[0002] The application of false eyelashes is a multistep process. First, the preparation and measurement step involves gently removing the eyelashes from the tray and holding the eyelash up against the eyelid to measure to fit the natural length of lash line. Next, the eyelashes must be trimmed to size. Using scissors, the eyelash band is trimmed to the size of the eye. Next, the eyelash adhesive is applied by brushing a thin layer of glue to the eyelash band. The eyelashes are applied by grasping the eyelash, often using an eyelash applicator, and the false eyelash is placed on top and as close to the eye’s natural lash line as possible, then the corners are secured. Once the eyelash adhesive has dried, it is common to brush eyelashes upward using the comb end of the applicator to ensure they are blended well.
[0003] Often false eyelashes are worn with eyeliner and eyeshadow. Depending on the liquid eyeliner formula used, the use of eyeliner following the application of false eyelashes may result in clumps of liquid liner in the eyelashes, just as one would encounter with natural eyelashes, due to challenges inherent with liquid liner
application.
[0004] While variations in eyeliner formula, changing the order of the steps involved (such as curling eyelashes after liquid eyeliner has been applied), using pencil liners in tricky places, and the use of eyeliner applicators may lower the risk of liquid liner interfering with applied eyelashes, this is nonetheless a common occurrence.
[0005] Other issues that may arise relate to the eyelash glue. For instance, the person applying the eyelashes may be uncertain about the amount of time required for the glue to become tacky and ready for application. This uncertainty makes it difficult for beginners to succeed with false eyelashes as most of the time beginners apply the glue too early, i.e. while still wet, which allows the false eyelashes to move around during application, making the eyelashes more difficult to apply. Also, the build up of glue on the eyelashes may be unpleasant from an aesthetic perspective and may also cause damage to the false eyelashes.
[0006] Consumers also find it undesirable to see a gap between natural eyelashes and false eyelash band, the appearance of which may be amplified with clear or white glue, once dried. Another common problem encountered when applying false eyelashes is concealing the eyelash adhesive or glue. Often this is addressed by using clear or white eyelash glue and covering up the dried adhesive residue with eyeshadow or eyeliner.
[0007] There is a need for product that is an eyelash adhesive and also an eyeliner, and thereby avoids the drawbacks above, and others. Eyelashes are often applied in a hurry, so improving the efficiency of the application process by eliminating the additional step of applying eyeliner separate from eyelash adhesive is desirable.

[0020] FIG 2. is a photographic image of the composition of the preferred
embodiment applied as eyeliner to the lash line. [0021 ] FIG 3. is a photographic image of a subject applying false eyelashes along the lash line after the liner has been applied.
[0022] FIG 4. is a photographic image of the false eyelashes adhered to the lash line using the composition of the preferred embodiment.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0023] In a preferred embodiment, the composition may be used as an adhesive in the application of false eyelashes. The application process of a false eyelash 10 is generally shown in figures 1 to 4.
[0024] Since dimensions of an eye of a person may vary from one person to another, the false eyelash 10 is generally dimensioned larger than an average lash line above the eye so that similar eyelashes may be manufactured in large quantities and used on a large number of different people via a customization step. As a preliminary step, the false eyelash 10 is trimmed using a cutting tool 50, such as a pair of scissors. It is to be appreciated by a person of skill in the art with the benefit of this description that in some examples, the false eyelash 10 may be made from a material that is easily ripped by hand such that the cutting tool 50 may be omitted. For example, the false eyelash 10 may be perforated or include a weak portion at periodic distances to facilitate tearing. The dimension to which the false eyelash 10 is to be trimmed is not particularly limited. The dimensions may be premeasured to be about the same length as the distance between a first corner 15 and a second corner 20 of an eye above which the false eyelash 10 is to be applied. In other examples, it is to be appreciated by a person of skill in the art with the benefit of this description that the false eyelash 10 may be pre dimensioned to the different dimensions such that it may be directly applied above the eye. In such examples, the false eyelash 10 may be sold in varying dimensions to accommodate people with different sizes of eyes.
[0025] Once the false eyelash 10 is trimmed to an appropriate dimension, the composition 25 is to be applied substantially evenly from the first corner 15 to the second corner 20 of the lash line above the eye as shown in figure 2. In the present example, an applicator 30, such as a brush, may be used to apply the composition 25.
In other examples, the applicator 30 maybe a stylus coated with the composition. In further examples, the applicator 30 may include a conduit through which the composition 25 may be delivered to the lash line.
[0026] The composition 25 is not particularly limited and may be any substance with adhesive properties capable of affixing the false eyelash 10 to the lash line above the eye. In the present example, the adhesive quality of the composition 25 may activate shortly after application, such as approximately ten seconds after application, to facilitate application while providing enough time between application of the composition 25 and application of the false eyelash 10 by the person. Once the composition 25 is placed on the lash line and activated, the false eyelash 10 is to applied to the lash line as shown in figure 3. It is to be appreciated that the activation time of the composition 25 may be more or less than ten seconds depending on the exact nature of the composition 25. Accordingly, the composition 25 may be modified to allow for more time, such as approximately thirty seconds, to apply the false eyelash 10 or to reduce the activation time, such as to five seconds, to decrease the wait time during the application process of the false eyelash 10. Figure 4 illustrates the false eyelash 10 applied above the eye of a user.
[0027] It is to be appreciated by the person of skill in the art with the benefit of this description, that the process may be repeated. For example, the same process may be carried out for the other eye to provide facial symmetry. In other examples, the process may also be repeated for the lower lash line below the eye, if a false eyelash 10 is to be applied below the eye in addition to the application of the false eyelash 10 to the lash line above the eye.
[0028] In the present example, the composition 25 may also be colored. The color of the composition 25 is not particularly limited and may be colored using additives such as color pigments. Accordingly, the composition 25 may also act as a stencil to provide a template for lining up the false eyelash 10 during application.
[0029] During application and activation, the composition 25 may appear wet. Once the composition 25 has dried, the composition 25 may have the appearance of an eyeliner, without the glossy‘wet’ appearance commonly associated with glues and adhesives. In addition, the use of rubber latex, such as a natural rubber latex or a synthetic rubber latex, provides the dry composition with flexibility to contour to the shape of the lash line without undesirably brittleness that gives rise to cracking and potential loss of adhesion between the false eyelash 10 and the lash line above the eye on the eyelid.
[0030] In a further example, the composition 25 may be used on its own as an eyeliner without applying a false eyelash 10 above the eye. In this example, the composition 25 may be applied using the same technique as for a conventional eyeliner, such as with the use of the applicator 30. In particular, the composition 25 may applied evenly from the the first corner 15 to the second corner 20 of the lash line. The composition 25 may dry in approximately ten seconds.
[0031 ] The composition 25 of the present example is not particularly limited and may include an acrylate copolymer adhesive, a film former, a thickener, and a pigment. For example, the acrylate copolymer may be an acrylates/ethylhexyl acrylate copolymer. The film former is preferably a rubber latex, such as natural rubber latex, which has been found to be particularly advantageous, and may also act as a stabilizer. The thickener may be selected from one or more of an acrylates copolymer, polyvidone (PVP), and/or propylene glycol. In other example, the thickener may be a hydrophilic thickener and be selected from the group consisting of polysaccharides such as xanthan gum, cellulose derivatives such as hydroxyethyl-cellulose and acrylate
(co)polymers. It is also to be appreciated that the relative amount of thickener in the composition 25 is not limited. For example, the thickener may be about 0.01 % by weight or more, preferably about 0.1 % by weight or more, and more preferably about 0.5% by weight or more, relative to the total weight of the composition 25. In other example, inorganic thickeners may also be used, such as kaolin; silica; bentonite and derivatives thereof such as Quaternium-18 bentonite, Quaternium-90 bentonite, and stearalkonium bentonite; hectorite and derivatives thereof such as Quaternium-18 hectorite, stearalkonium hectorite, and disteardimonium hectorite; magnesium aluminum silicate; aluminum iron calcium magnesium zirconium silicate; tromethamine magnesium aluminum silicate; lithium magnesium sodium silicates and hydrated lithium magnesium sodium silicate. It is also to be appreciated that the relative amount of pigment in the composition 25 is not limited. As an example, the amount of pigment may range from about 0.01 % to about 10% by weight. In other examples, the amount of pigment may range from about 0.1 % to about 5% by weight, and more preferably from about 1 % to about 3% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition 25.
[0032] The pigment is not limited and may include various substances depending on what the desired appearance and color is selected. The pigment used in the present invention may be selected from inorganic pigments, organic pigments, and pearlescent pigments. For example, the pigment may include Black 2, iron oxides, cadmium pigments, titanium oxide, chromium pigments, cobalt pigments, copper pigments, and other metal-based pigments. The pigment may also be from biological sources such as pigments extracted from various plants.
