Description
Cross laminated film with reinforcements
FIELD OF INVENTION:
[001] The present invention relates to cross laminated film with reinforcements. The reinforced cross laminated film possesses higher tensile strength, higher tear strength & reduced tear propagation resulting in a better material compared to normal film or a normal cross laminated film.
[002] The reinforcement includes threads, tapes, fibres, net, scrim.
BACKGROUND/PRIOR ART OF INVENTION:
[003] Background description includes information that may be useful in understanding the present invention. It is not an admission that any of the information provided herein is prior art or relevant to the presently claimed invention, or that any publication specifically or implicitly referenced is prior art.
[004] Polymer based flexible films have multiple applications such as packaging, covers, water proof membranes, bags for carrying goods, green house covers and can be used in household, agriculture, aerospace, construction etc. The film using a blown film process usually has varying mechanical properties based on the machine direction or transverse direction of the film. In order to improve film properties in all direction a cross-laminated process is adopted which balances the mechanical properties in all directions and also improves strength due to lamination. [005] Thus, the currently available technology provides a cross-laminated film having improved physical properties compared to a normal plastic film such as improved tensile strength, improved tear resistance, improved puncture resistance.
[006] A cross-laminated film finds use where increased strength is required in a polymer film in all directions. Cross-Laminated films are films that are laminated together in a way that the machine direction and transverse directions of the film are tilted at an angle before their lamination either by cross cutting or by any other
method. This helps to increase the strength of the film in traverse direction and improves the tensile, tear and dart impact strength of the film in all directions.
[007] However, the aforesaid cross-laminated film is not strong enough to be suitable for applications requiring film with still higher strength. Hence, the present invention has been introduced.

[014] The reinforcement is incorporated longitudinally i.e. in longitudinal direction between two layers of the reinforced cross laminated film.
[015] The reinforcement is disposed transversely i.e. in transverse direction between two layers of the reinforced cross laminated film.
[016] The reinforcement is aligned both in longitudinal and transverse direction intersecting each other forming net of reinforcement sandwiched between two layers of the reinforced cross laminated film.
[017] The reinforcements intersect each other diagonally constituting diamond net of reinforcement placed between two layers of the reinforced cross laminated film.
[018] The reinforcement can be provided in any other pattern including any combination of the reinforcement. [019] Any reinforcement can be placed on one side of the film in case the film is made of single layer.

DETAIL DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENT INVENTION WITH REFERENCE TO THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS OF PREFERRED
EMBODIMENTS
[028] While the embodiments of the disclosure are subject to various modifications and alterative forms, specific embodiment thereof have been shown by way of example in the figures and will be described below. It should be understood, however, that it is not intended to limit the disclosure to the particular forms disclosed, but on the contrary, the disclosure is to cover all modifications, equivalents, and alterative falling within the scope of the disclosure.
[029] The present invention makes a disclosure regarding a technology pertaining to cross laminated film with reinforcements. [030] According to this invention, the cross laminated film with reinforcements comprising a cross laminated film reinforced with fibres, threads, scrim or tapes either in longitudinal direction, transverse direction or by forming a net or by introduction of a diamond netting or any other form of reinforcement that further enhances the properties of a cross laminated film by such introduction. The reinforcement helps to improve tear strength, tensile strength, dart impact strength, puncture resistance as well as inhibit tear propagation when the film gets tom and the propagating tear reaches these threads or reinforcements.
[031] The cross laminated film employed in the present invention can further be enhanced by additives to impart ultra violet resistance in case the film has to be exposed to sunlight such as temporary housing covers, pond liners, agricultural applications etc. [032] The Cross Laminated film may be made of single or multiple layers of
Polyethylene, Polypropylene, Polyester, Ethylene-vinyl acetate or any other polymers suitable to make thin flexible plastic films by blown method or by cast method etc.
[033] These are then cut at an angle or the machine direction and transverse direction are shifted at an angle by some other process to distribute the mechanical properties such that the process of such shifting and then laminating the film in multiple layers increases the strength of the film. The film may be embossed with a pattern and stretched in different directions to further improve the mechanical properties.
[034] The cross laminated film may be made by any process and may have plurality of layers bonded together by heating or by adhesive lamination or any other welding, joining or lamination process.
[035] Such film has much better physical properties compared to a normal plastic film made by an extrusion process.
[036] However, in order to further increase the properties a reinforcement with fibres, threads, tapes, net or scrim is introduced according to present invention. These reinforcements may be made of Polypropylene, Polyethylene, Polyester, Cotton, glass fibre or any other natural or synthetic material.
[037] The reinforcement is placed in between the layers of the film before the layers or the films are laminated together using heating or by adhesive lamination or any other laminated, joining or welding process. The reinforcement may be even grafted for a stronger bond.
[038] For present invention, reference may be made to figure 1. According to this, reinforced cross laminated film (100) of present invention comprises two layers (101, 102) adjoined to each other. However, the number of layers varies from one to any number as required for necessary strength of the final product to be obtained. [039] For the first embodiment of invention, reference may be made to figure 2.
In accordance with this embodiment, reinforcement (200) is incorporated longitudinally i.e. in longitudinal direction between two layers (101, 102) of the reinforced cross laminated film (100).
[040] For the second embodiment of present invention, reference may be made to figure 3. In this reinforcement (300) is disposed transversely i.e. in transverse direction between two layers (101, 102) of the reinforced cross laminated film (100).
[041] The third embodiment of instant invention is depicted in figure 4. According to this, reinforcements (400) are aligned both in longitudinal and transverse direction intersecting each other forming net of reinforcement. Said net structured reinforcement (400) is sandwiched between two layers (101, 102) of the reinforced cross laminated film (100).
[042] Now, referring to figure 5 regarding fourth embodiment of instant invention, wherein reinforcements (500) intersect each other diagonally constituting diamond net of reinforcements. Said reinforcement (500) is placed between two layers (101 , 102) of the reinforced cross laminated film (100).
[043] The aforesaid exemplary embodiments indicate different patterns of the reinforcement, wherein the reinforcement is made of for example threads. However, said reinforcement can be any combination of the patterns (200/300/400/500) or in any other form so as to serve the purpose. Thus, the reinforcement can take any form readily apparent to a person skilled in the art without restricting ambit of the invention to the given exemplary embodiments.
[044] The reinforcement is placed across the whole surface of said adjoining layer of film.
[045] According to another aspect of present invention, any reinforcement (500/200/300/400) can be placed on one side of the film incase the film is made of single layer.
[046] According to still another aspect of present invention, wherein the film (100) is made of more than 2 layers, the reinforcement (200/300/400/500) is not necessarily incorporated between every 2 layers of said film (100).
[047] The above implies that, reinforcement may be incorporated between two layers and may not be present between other two layers placed adjacent to each other.
[048] Thus, the selection is made according to the requirement of strength in the final product of present invention.
[049] Further, according to another aspect of present invention, the reinforcement may be different between different pair of layers of the multilayered film (100).
[050] The invented film is flexible with improved physical properties and improved tensile, tear and puncture resistance compared to a normal cross laminated film.
[051] The same can be observed from the following comparison. MLCL Film - Tensile Strength Machine Direction 224 kg/cm2 and Transverse Direction 275 kg/cm2
MLCL Film with Reinforcement Machine Direction 294 kg/cm2 and Transverse Direction 345 kg/cm2
[052] Each of the appended claims defines a separate invention, which for infringement purposes is recognized as including equivalents to the various
elements or limitations specified in the claims. Depending on the context, all references below to the "invention" may in some cases refer to certain specific embodiments only. In other cases, it will be recognized that references to the "invention" will refer to subject matter recited in one or more, but not necessarily all, of the claims.
[053] Groupings of alternative elements or embodiments of the invention disclosed herein are not to be construed as limitations. Each group member can be referred to and claimed individually or in any combination with other members of the group or other elements found herein. One or more members of a group can be included in, or deleted from, a group for reasons of convenience and/or patentability. When any such inclusion or deletion occurs, the specification is herein deemed to contain the group as modified thus fulfilling the written description of all groups used in the appended claims.
[054] It will be understood by those within the art that, in general, terms used herein, and especially in the appended claims (e.g., bodies of the appended claims) are generally intended as“open” terms (e.g., the term“including” should be interpreted as“including but not limited to,” the term“having” should be interpreted as“having at least,” the term“includes” should be interpreted as “includes but is not limited to,” etc.). It will be further understood by those within the art that if a specific number of an introduced claim recitation is intended, such an intent will be explicitly recited in the claim, and in the absence of such recitation no such intent is present. For example, as an aid to understanding, the following appended claims may contain usage of the introductory phrases“at least one” and “one or more” to introduce claim recitations. However, the use of such phrases should not be construed to imply that the introduction of a claim recitation by the indefinite articles “a” or“an” limits any particulars claim containing such introduced claim recitation to inventions containing only one such recitation, even when the same claim includes the introductory phrases“one or more” or“at least one” and indefinite articles such as“a” or“an” (e.g.,“a” and/or“an” should typically be interpreted to mean“at least one” or“one or more”); the same holds
true for the use of definite articles used to introduce claim recitations. In addition, even if a specific number of an introduced claim recitation is explicitly recited, those skilled in the art will recognize that such recitation should typically be interpreted to mean at least the recited number (e.g., the bare recitation of“two recitations,” without other modifiers, typically means at least two recitations, or two or more recitations). Furthermore, in those instances where a convention analogues to“at least one of A, B and C, etc.” is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention (e.g.,“a system having at least one of A, B and C” would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and/or A, B, and C together, etc.). In those instances where a convention analogous to“at least one of A, B, or C, etc.” is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention (e.g.,“a system having at least one of A, B, or C” would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and/or A, B, and C together, etc.). It will be further understood by those within the art that virtually any disjunctive word and/or phrase presenting two or more alternative terms, whether in the description, claims, or drawings, should be understood to contemplate the possibilities of including one of the terms, either of the terms, or both terms. For example, the phrase“A or B” will be understood to include the possibilities of“A” or“B” or“A and B”.
[055] The above description does not provide specific details of manufacture or design of the various components. Those of skill in the art are familiar with such details, and unless departures from those techniques are set out, techniques, known, related art or later developed designs and materials should be employed. Those in the art are capable of choosing suitable manufacturing and design details.
[056] The terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting of the present disclosure. It will be appreciated that several of the above-disclosed and other features and frictions, or alternatives thereof, may be combined into other systems or
applications. Various presently unforeseen or unanticipated alteratives, modifications, variations, or improvements therein may subsequently be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present disclosure as encompassed by the following claims.
