The front panel 16 is spaced from the rear mounting structure 12 by the edging strip 26 which closes off side edges of the display device between the rear mounting structure and the front panel. The front panel 16 is 5mm thick and has sign indicia 22 marked thereon. The sign indicia is applied to an outer face of the panel 20 in a digital printing process.

Description

AN ILLUMINATED DISPLAY DEVICE
FIELD OF INVENTION This invention relates to an illuminated display device.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION According to the invention there is provided an illuminated display device including: a rear mounting structure having an electrical light source mounted thereto, the light source being connectable to an electrical power supply; a translucent front panel of extruded polystyrene spaced from the rear mounting structure; and an edging structure extending between the rear mounting structure and the front panel along a circumference of the front panel for closing off outer side edges of the rear mounting structure and the front panel and for spacing the rear mounting structure and the front panel from one another. The front panel may have sign indicia marked thereon. More specifically, the sign indicia may comprise an ink applied to an outer face of the front panel.
The front panel may be of high density extruded polystyrene foam material. More specifically, the front panel may be of bright white high density extruded polystyrene foam material.
The front panel may have a thickness of between 3mm and 12mm. More specifically, the front panel may have a thickness of about 5mm.
The rear mounting structure may comprise a rear mounting panel. The rear mounting panel may be of extruded polystyrene foam material or other suitable material. More specifically, the rear mounting panel may be of high density extruded polystyrene foam material.
The edging structure may comprise a strip of extruded polystyrene cut to a shape corresponding to outer edges of the rear mounting panel and of the front panel.
The edging structure may be bonded to the rear mounting panel and the front panel, respectively, by means of a suitable adhesive.
The electrical light source may comprise at least one light-emitting diode. More specifically, the electrical light source may comprise a number of light-emitting diodes mounted to a front face of the rear mounting panel.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Further features of the invention are described hereinafter by way of a non-limiting example of the invention, with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying diagrammatic drawings. In the drawings: Figure 1 shows a three-dimensional view of an illuminated display device in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 shows an exploded three-dimensional view of the illuminated display device of Figure 1 ;
Figure 3A shows a three-dimensional view of the translucent front panel of the illuminated display device of Figure 1 ; Figure 3B shows a three-dimensional view of the edging structure of the illuminated display device of Figure 1 ; and
Figure 3C shows a three-dimensional view of the rear mounting structure of the illuminated display device of Figure 1 having light-emitting diodes mounted thereto.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
With reference to the drawings, an illuminated display device in accordance with the invention, is designated generally by the reference numeral 10. The illuminated display device comprises, broadly, a rear mounting structure 12 having an electrical light source in the form of a number of light-emitting diodes 14, mounted thereto, a translucent front panel 16 and an edging structure 18 disposed between the rear mounting structure and the front panel 16.
The front panel 16 comprises a 5mm thick panel 20 of bright white high density extruded polystyrene foam material. The front panel 20 has a generally rectangular shape with rounded edges and has sign indicia 22 "ABC" marked thereon. More specifically, the sign indicia 22 comprise an ink which is applied to an outer face of the panel 20 in a digital printing process. The rear mounting structure 12 includes a rear panel 24 of bright white high density extruded polystyrene foam material which has a shape and dimensions identical to the shape and dimensions of the front panel 20. The light-emitting diodes 14 are mounted in a grid pattern to an inner face of the rear panel 24. The diodes are connectable to an electrical power source.
The edging structure comprises a continuous strip 26 of extruded polystyrene foam formed into an annular shape corresponding to the profiles of the front and rear panels 20 and 24. More specifically, the edging structure is shaped so as to close off outer side edges of the front and rear panels and for spacing the front and rear panels from one another. More specifically, the edging strip is bonded to the front and rear panels by means of a suitable adhesive.
The applicant believes that the illuminated display device provides a low cost and easy to manufacture, yet effective illuminated sign wherein the material properties and thickness of the high density extruded polystyrene foam render the front panel sufficiently translucent to permit light emitted by the light-emitting diodes to pass therethrough thereby illuminating the sign indicia.
