Abstract

In piggable transmission pipelines, stuck pig issue has been frequently reported. There are several factors that can cause the pig to get stuck inside the pipeline which are mainly related to the pipeline's geometry, fittings, cleanliness, pig's design and operating parameters. Stuck pig can cause significant impact on the pipeline operation and integrity including pipeline blockage (operation disruption), pipeline cleaning and inspection pigging delay, high maintenance cost to locate and retrieve the stuck pig. Statistics reveal that many of stuck pig cases, perhaps the majority of cases, were found at the pipeline's fittings, valves or sharp bends. In long pipelines (i.e. 100+ kilometer), it is quite challenging to identify the location of a stuck pig at which multiple valves and fittings exist. This patent application is proposing to design, manufacture and fabricate a special fitting (spools) with butt-weld or flange joints to be installed upstream and downstream the mainline valves, fittings and sharp bends where the probability of encountering stuck pig case is high. This special spool will be made from the same materials of the pipeline with addition of a sight glass. The sight glass shall be made of materials that are compatible to sustain the applied stresses and external and internal environment of the pipeline. In piggable transmission pipelines, stuck pig issue has been frequently reported. There are several factors that can cause the pig to get stuck inside the pipeline which are mainly related to the pipeline's geometry, fittings, cleanliness, pig's design and operating parameters. Stuck pig can cause significant impact on the pipeline operation and integrity including pipeline blockage (operation disruption), pipeline cleaning and inspection pigging delay, high maintenance cost to locate and retrieve the stuck pig.

Claims
Currently, there are no practical options available to determine the location of a stuck mechanical pig inside a long pipeline. And even after finding the pig, it is challenging to retrieve the pig. From my experience in pipeline business and to my knowledge, this type of special fitting has not been designed or used in pipeline industry.
Since many of the suck pigs cases took place at the fittings, valves and sharp bends, this special fitting/spool can play crucial role to determine the location of a lost stuck pigs. Moreover, this fitting can be used, if flanged joints, to facilitate the retrieval of the stuck pig during pipeline shutdown.
Prompt finding of the lost stuck pigs will avoid major implications such as pipeline blockage (shutdown-impact on customers), pipeline cleaning and inspection pigging delay, high maintenance cost to locate and retrieve the stuck pig.
