Abstract

A garment incorporates a detachable garment strip. The garment has a first series of releasable fasteners attached to a garment part, and a second series of releasable fasteners attached to the garment part and spaced apart from the first series of releasable fasteners. The detachable garment strip is designed to overlie the garment part between the first and second series of releasable fasteners. The garment strip has first and second strip edges, a third series of releasable fasteners attached along the first strip edge, and a fourth series of releasable fasteners attached along the second strip edge.

Technical Field and Background

[0001] The present disclosure relates broadly and generally to a garment comprising one or more detachable and exchangeable garment strips. The garment strips may be entirely decorative for added fashion, and may offer added layers and thickness in certain parts of the garments to promoted increased durability and wear-resistance.

[0004] According to one exemplary embodiment, the present disclosure comprises a garment incorporating a detachable garment (e.g., fashion) strip. The garment comprises a first series of protruding zipper teeth attached to a garment part, and a second series of protruding zipper teeth attached to the garment part and spaced apart from the first series of zipper teeth. The detachable garment strip is designed to overlie the garment part between the first and second series of zipper teeth. The garment strip has first and second strip edges, a third series of protruding zipper teeth attached along the first strip edge, and a fourth series of protruding zipper teeth attached along the second strip edge. A first zipper slider is adapted for selectively meshing together and separating the first and third series of zipper teeth, thereby selectively attaching and detaching the first strip edge of the garment strip to and from the garment part. [0032] Referring now specifically to the drawings, a garment according to one exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, and shown generally at broad reference numeral 10. The garment 10 incorporates a detachable and exchangeable fashion strip 1 1 . While the exemplary garment 10 shown comprises denim jeans, the present concept may be incorporated in a variety of other garments including (e.g.) sweat pants and sweat shirts, shorts, skirts, dresses, long and short sleeve shirts, jackets, socks, hats, and others— designed for men, women, and children.

[0033] As best shown in Figures 2, 3, and 4, the present garment 10 comprises first and second spaced-apart series of protruding zipper teeth 12, 14 extending on an outside leg 15 of the garment 10 from just below the waist to the just above the hemline. The first series of zipper teeth 12 is formed along a longitudinal free edge of zipper tape 16, as shown in Figure 3, while the opposite longitudinal tape edge 16A is sewn and concealed between a first narrow uncut fold 17 in the garment leg 15. Likewise, the second series of zipper teeth 14 is formed along a longitudinal free edge of a second zipper tape 18, while the opposite longitudinal tape edge 18A is sewn and concealed between a second narrow uncut fold 19 in the garment leg 15. In one embodiment, the lateral spacing (or width dimension) between first and second series of zipper teeth 12, 14 is uniform from top to bottom. An exemplary width dimension may be between 2 and 4 inches.

[0034] Referring to Figures 3, 4, and 5, each narrow fold 17, 19 in the garment 10 is formed by double-folding the garment leg 15 such that stitching "S" passes through two outer garment layers, the zipper tape, and an inside garment layer. The stitching may comprise any conventional machine or hand-stitch technique known in the industry including, for example, pick stitch, catch stitch (or herringbone stitch), slip stitch, blind stitch, or the like. In alternative embodiments, the zipper tape 16, 18 may be affixed to the garment leg 15 by other means including adhesives, heat or electronic welding. The garment fabric between the first and second folds 17, 19 is continuously knit (or otherwise integrally formed together) to fully cover the leg when the fashion strip 1 1 is detached from the garment 10.

[0035] Referring again to Figure 2, each series of zipper teeth 12, 14 comprises opposite lead and tail ends 21 , 22, an insertion pin 23A, 23B located at the lead end 21 , and a slider stop 24A, 24B located at the tail end 22. In the exemplary embodiment, the first and second series of zipper teeth 12, 14 are reversely arranged such that the insertion pin 23A of the first series of zipper teeth 12 is substantially laterally aligned with the slider stop 24B of the second series of zipper teeth 14, while the insertion pin 23B of the second series of zipper teeth 14 is substantially laterally aligned with the slider stop 24A of the first series of zipper teeth 12. The exemplary open-ended zipper fasteners described above may comprise individual pieces of metal molded into shape and set on the zipper tape at regular intervals. The zippers may be formed from flat or preformed wire in brass, aluminum, nickel, or other suitable metal. The teeth or chain width may have any desired gauge size, including #3, #5, #7, #8 or #10. Alternative applicable zipper types may include (e.g) coil zippers, invisible zippers, reverse coil zippers, plastic-molded zippers, two way open-ended zippers, two way closed-ended zippers, magneticzippers, waterproof zippers, and ridge-sealed zippers.

[0036] The detachable fashion strip 1 1 is designed to overlie the garment leg 15 between the first and second series of zipper teeth 12, 14. The fashion strip 1 1 has first and second strip edges (or tape edges) 31 , 32, a first series of protruding zipper teeth 33 attached along the first strip edge 31 , and a second series of protruding zipper teeth 34 attached along the second strip edge 32. A first hand-operated slider is 35 carried on the first series of protruding zipper teeth 33, and defines an internal generally Y-shaped channel designed for selectively meshing together and separating complementary zipper teeth of the fashion strip 1 1 and garment leg 15, as described further below. Likewise, a second hand-operated slider 36 is carried on the second series of protruding zipper teeth 34, and defines an identical Y-shaped channel designed for selectively meshing together and separating the complementary zipper teeth of the fashion strip 1 1 and garment leg 15. Each zipper slider 35, 36 has a manual pull tab 38, and optionally an anti-slide zipper lock (not shown). The zipper lock is designed to hold the slider in a steady closed position, resisting forces that would inadvertently move the slider and open the zipper.

[0037] Figures 6-9 demonstrate one exemplary method for attaching the fashion strip 1 1 to the garment leg 15. As shown in Figure 6, the zipper slider 35 of fashion strip 1 1 is first applied to the insertion pin 23A at the lead (top) end 21 of the first series of zipper teeth 12 formed with the garment leg 15— as demonstrated at arrow 41 . The zipper slider 35 is then manually pulled downward in the direction indicated at arrow 42 in Figure 7, such that the internal Y-shaped channel causes the complementary teeth to mesh together and interlock. After slider 35 is pulled to the bottom of the garment leg 15, as shown in Figure 8, the second zipper slider 36 of fashion strip 1 1 is applied to the insertion pin 23B at the lead (bottom) end 21 of the second series of zipper teeth 14 formed with the garment leg 15— as demonstrated at arrow 43. The zipper slider 36 is then manually pulled upward in the direction indicated at arrow 44 in Figure 9, such that the internal Y- shaped channel causes the complementary teeth to mesh together and interlock. The fashion strip 1 1 is completely attached when the zipper slider 36 reaches the top end of the garment leg 15, as shown in Figures 1 and 4. The fashion strip 1 1 may be readily detached from the garment leg 15 in a reverse manner, as the manual zipper sliders 35, 36 separate the interlocked zipper teeth when pulled in the directions opposite that described above.

[0038] The exemplary garment 10 may comprise only a single fashion strip on one garment leg, or may comprise multiple fashion strips on one garment leg, or may comprise one or more fashion strips on both garment legs. The fashion strips 1 1 may be constructed of any flexible fabric or non-fabric material such polyester, cotton, fiber blends, vinyl, or the like, and may include separately or integrally formed elements including lights, reflectors, letters, numbers, designs, graphics, pictures, or symbols. The exemplary fashion strips may be fabricated in a wide variety of colors and designs, and may be worn for promoting a sports team, organization, country, special event, tourist area, or the like.

[0039] Figures 10 and 1 1 disclose a further exemplary embodiment of the present garment 50. The exemplary garment 50 comprises a jacket incorporating a detachable and exchangeable fashion strip 51 . The garment 50 has first and second spaced-apart series of protruding zipper teeth 52, 54, as previously described, extending along an outside sleeve 55 of the garment 50 from just below the shoulder to just above the wrist. The series of zipper teeth 52, 54 are formed with respective zipper tapes. As previously described, the zipper tapes have respective longitudinal edges which are sewn and concealed between narrow uncut folds in the garment sleeve. The lateral spacing (or width dimension) between first and second series of zipper teeth 52, 54 may uniform from top to bottom.

[0040] As best shown in Figure 1 1 , each series of zipper teeth 52, 54 comprises opposite lead and tail ends 61 , 62, an insertion pin 63A, 63B located at the lead end 61 , and a slider stop 64A, 64B located at the tail end. Likewise, a second hand-operated slider 66 is carried on the second series of protruding zipper teeth 64, and defines an internal generally Y- shaped channel designed for selectively meshing together and separating complementary zipper teeth of the fashion strip 51 and garment sleeve 55. Each zipper slider 65, 66 comprises a manual pull tab 68, and optionally an anti-slide zipper lock.

[0042] Figures 12 and 13 illustrate a further exemplary embodiment of the present garment 70 incorporating a detachable fashion strip 71 . The exemplary garment 70 comprises first and second spaced-apart series of protruding zipper teeth 72, 74 extending on an outside leg 75 of the garment 70 from just below the waist to the just above the hemline. The first series of zipper teeth 72 is formed along a longitudinal free edge of zipper tape 76, such as previously described, while the opposite longitudinal tape edge is sewn and concealed between a first narrow uncut fold in the garment leg 75. Likewise, the second series of zipper teeth 74 is formed along a longitudinal free edge of a second zipper tape 78, while the opposite longitudinal tape edge is sewn and concealed between a second narrow uncut fold in the garment leg 75.

82, an insertion pin 83A, 83B located at the lead end 81 , and a slider stop 84A, 84B located at the tail end 82. [0044] The detachable fashion strip 71 is designed to overlie the garment leg 75 between the first and second series of zipper teeth 72, 74. The fashion strip 71 has first and second strip edges (or tape edges) 91 , 92, a first series of protruding zipper teeth 93 attached along the first strip edge 91 , and a second series of protruding zipper teeth 94 attached along the second strip edge 92. A first hand-operated slider is 95 carried on the first series of protruding zipper teeth 93, and defines an internal generally Y-shaped channel designed for selectively meshing together and separating complementary zipper teeth of the fashion strip 71 and garment leg 75. Likewise, a second hand-operated slider 96 is carried on the second series of protruding zipper teeth 94, and defines an identical Y-shaped channel designed for selectively meshing together and separating the complementary zipper teeth of the fashion strip 71 and garment leg 75. Each zipper slider 95, 96 has a manual pull tab 98, and optionally an anti-slide zipper lock (not shown).

[0045] In this embodiment, the zipper slider 95 of fashion strip 71 is first applied to the insertion pin 83A at the lead (top) end 81 of the first series of zipper teeth 72 formed with the garment leg 75. The zipper slider 95 is then manually pulled downward towards the bottom hem, such that the internal Y-shaped channel causes the complementary teeth 72, 93 to mesh together and interlock. After slider 95 is pulled to the bottom of the garment leg 75, the second zipper slider 96 of fashion strip 71 is applied to the insertion pin 83B at the lead (top) end 81 of the second series of zipper teeth 74 formed with the garment leg 75. The zipper slider 96 is then manually pulled downward towards the bottom hem, such that the internal Y-shaped channel causes the complementary teeth 74, 94 to mesh together and interlock. The fashion strip 71 is completely attached when the zipper slider 96 reaches the bottom end of the garment leg 75, as shown in Figure 12. The fashion strip 71 may be readily detached from the garment leg 75 in a reverse manner, as the manual zipper sliders 95, 96 separate the interlocked zipper teeth when pulled in the directions opposite that described above.

Claims

What is Claimed:

1 . A garment, comprising:

a first series of protruding zipper teeth attached to a garment part;

a second series of protruding zipper teeth attached to the garment part and spaced apart from said first series of zipper teeth;

a detachable garment strip designed to overlie the garment part between said first and second series of zipper teeth, and having first and second strip edges, a third series of protruding zipper teeth attached along the first strip edge, and a fourth series of protruding zipper teeth attached along the second strip edge;

a first zipper slider adapted for selectively meshing together and separating said first and third series of zipper teeth, thereby selectively attaching and detaching the first strip edge of said garment strip to and from said garment part; and

a second zipper slider adapted for selectively meshing together and separating said second and fourth series of zipper teeth, thereby selectively attaching and detaching the second strip edge of said garment strip to and from said garment part.

2. The garment according to claim 1 , wherein said first series of zipper teeth comprises opposite lead and tail ends, an insertion pin located at the lead end, and a slider stop located at the tail end.

3. The garment according to claim 2, wherein said second series of zipper teeth comprises opposite lead and tail ends, an insertion pin located at the lead end, and a slider stop located at the tail end.

4. The garment according to claim 3, wherein said first and second series of zipper teeth are reversely arranged such that the insertion pin of said first series of zipper teeth is substantially aligned with the slider stop of said second series of zipper teeth, and the insertion pin of said second series of zipper teeth is substantially aligned with the slider stop of said first series of zipper teeth.

5. The garment according to claim 1 , wherein said first series of zipper teeth is located along one edge of an elongated fabric tape, and wherein an opposite edge of said fabric tape is attached to said garment part.

6. The garment according to claim 5, wherein said garment part comprises a narrow uncut fold, and wherein the edge of said fabric tape opposite said first series of zipper teeth is sewn and concealed between the narrow fold of said garment part.

7. The garment according to claim 1 , wherein said second series of zipper teeth is located along one edge of an elongated fabric tape, and wherein an opposite edge of said fabric tape is attached to said garment part.

8. The garment according to claim 7, wherein said garment part comprises a narrow uncut fold, and wherein the edge of said fabric tape opposite said second series of zipper teeth is sewn and concealed between the narrow fold of said garment part.

9. The garment according to claim 1 , wherein said first zipper slider is attached to said garment strip for sliding movement along said third series of zipper teeth.

10. The garment according to claim 1 , wherein said second zipper slider is attached to said garment strip for sliding movement along said fourth series of zipper teeth.

1 1 . The garment according to claim 1 , wherein said first and second zipper sliders comprise respective pull tabs.

12. The garment according to claim 1 , wherein said garment part comprises a pant's leg.

13. The garment according to claim 1 , wherein garment part comprises an arm sleeve.

14. A garment, comprising:

a first series of releasable fasteners attached to a garment part;

a second series of releasable fasteners attached to the garment part and spaced apart from said first series of releasable fasteners;

a detachable garment strip designed to overlie the garment part between said first and second series of releasable fasteners, and having first and second strip edges, a third series of releasable fasteners attached along the first strip edge, and a fourth series of releasable fasteners attached along the second strip edge;

whereby the first strip edge of said garment strip is selectively attached and detached to and from said garment part by selectively mating and releasing said first and third series of releasable fasteners, and

whereby the second strip edge of said garment strip is selectively attached and detached to and from said garment part by selectively mating and releasing said second and fourth series of releasable fasteners.

15. The garment according to claim 14, wherein said first series of releasable fasteners are located along one edge of an elongated fabric tape, and wherein an opposite edge of said fabric tape is attached to said garment part.

16. The garment according to claim 15, wherein said garment part comprises a narrow uncut fold, and wherein the edge of said fabric tape opposite said first series of releasable fasteners is sewn and concealed between the narrow fold of said garment part.

17. The garment according to claim 14, wherein said second series of releasable fasteners are located along one edge of an elongated fabric tape, and wherein an opposite edge of said fabric tape is attached to said garment part.

18. The garment according to claim 17, wherein said garment part comprises a narrow uncut fold, and wherein the edge of said fabric tape opposite said second series of releasable fasteners is sewn and concealed between the narrow fold of said garment part.

19. The garment according to claim 14, wherein said garment part comprises a pant's leg. The garment according to claim 14, wherein garment part comprises an arm sleeve.
