Description

CAPSULE FOR PREPARING BEVERAGES
Technical Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a capsule for preparing beverages.
In particular, the present invention relates to a capsule comprising an outer body and a filter element, which defines, inside the outer casing, a chamber containing a substance from which a beverage is obtained by fluid injection. Capsules of this type may contain any kind of substance in the form of liquid, concentrate or granules, for example coffee powder, tea leaves, cocoa, milk powder, broth granulate etc. State of the Art
Capsules of the aforesaid type are commonly used, for example, in the known types of infusion devices and, in general, are formed by a (semi-) rigid cup-shaped body and by a cover, which defines, with the cup-shaped body, the aforesaid outer body and is stably connected to a flange extending all around the opening of the cup-shaped body.
The filter element arranged inside the capsule is usually formed by a conical or cup-shaped element made of a porous material such as, for example, filter paper or non- woven fabric and is connected to an inner surface of the cup-shaped body and/or of the cover. This connection may be made according to various known technical solutions.
Object of the Invention
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved capsule of the aforesaid type, which provides a particularly effective and stable connection between the filter element and the outer body of the capsule.
According to the present invention, a capsule for producing infused beverages is provided, as claimed in claim 1 and, preferably, as claimed in any one of the claims directly or indirectly dependent on claim 1.
Brief Description of the Drawings
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings showing a non-limiting embodiment,, in which:
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the capsule according to the present invention;
- Figure 2 is an exploded view of the capsule of Figure 1 ; and
- Figure 3 is a longitudinal section, with parts removed for clarity's sake, of the capsule of Figure 1. Detailed Description of Preferred Embodiments of the Invention
The present inve tion will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings to enable a person skilled in the art to implement and use it. Various modifications to the described embodiments will be immediately apparent to the person skilled in the art, and the described generic principles may be applied to other embodiments and applications without thereby departing from the protective scope of the present invention, as defined in the appended claims. Therefore, the present invention should not be considered limited to the embodiments described and shown, but as having the widest possible scope according to the principles and features here described and claimed.
In Figure 1, reference 1 indicates in its entirety a capsule for producing infused beverages, such as, for example, coffee, tea, chocolate, milk, broth, etc.
The capsule 1 comprises an outer body 2 comprising, in turn, a cup-shaped body 3 and a cover 4, stably and fluid- tight coupled to the cup-shaped body 3.
The cup-shaped body 3 is preferably made of (semi-) rigid plastic material and has a longitudinal axis 5. In the example shown in the attached figures, the cup- shaped body 3 has a generally frustoconical shape and includes a frustoconical side wall 6, which is coaxial 'with the axis 5, superiorly delimits an opening 8 of the cup-shaped body 3, and is closed, at its smaller base, by a bottom wall 7, which is normally integral with the side wall 6.
Although in the shown example the cup-shaped body 3 has a frustoconical shape, it may have any other shape, for example cylindrical or conical, depending on the machine on which it is used.
At the opening 8, the cup-shaped body 3 has an annular flange 9, which extends outwards from the side wall 6, with which it is normally integral, is superiorly defined by a flat annular surface 10 transverse to the axis 5 and has a width A, as measured in a radial direction with respect to the axis 5, which is constant along its entire circumference .
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the cover 4 is defined by a flat disc, which is normally made of a sheet of plastic or metal material, for example aluminium., or, preferably, of a metal-plastic multilayer laminate, and may be pierced, during use, to allow the injection of a pressurized fluid, usually water, thus infusing the substance contained in the capsule 1.
Conveniently, the lower surface of the cover 4, namely the surface facing the cup-shaped body 3, has a flat surface without recesses or protrusions. Moreover, the cover 4 conveniently has a constant thickness, thus lacking central recesses or peripheral parts thicker than the rest of the cove 4.
The cover 4 has a diameter substantially equal to the outer diameter of the flange 9 and is stably connected to the flange 9 via any suitable fastening means, preferably by heat sealing or ultrasonic welding.
As shown in Figures 2 and 3, the capsule 1 finally comprises a filter 11, which is arranged inside the outer body 2 and divides the inner space of the outer body 2 into a first chamber 12, which is inside the filter 11 and contains the substance to be infused, and a second chamber 13, which is outside the filter 11 and collects the infused beverage before it flows out of the capsule 1 through one or more openings made, in use, in the bottom wall 7.
In the shown example, the filter 11 is defined by a cup-shaped body 14 comprising a smooth frustoconical side wall coaxial with the axis 5 and tapered towards the bottom, and a bottom wall, which is convex towards the bottom wall 7 of the cup-shaped body 3. According to variants not shown, the cup-shaped body 14 may have shapes different from the one of the shown example, e.g. the bottom wall may be flat and/or the side wall may be cylindrical and/or corrugated. The filter 11 is made of a porous, water-permeable material, such as, for example, filter paper or non-woven fabric. At a free upper edge, the cup-shaped body 14 of the filter 11 further comprises a flat annular flange 15, which extends outwards from the side wall and is usually integral with the side wall as defined by a folded end portion of the side wall.
As shown in greater detail in Figure 3, the flange 15 has a width T, measured radially with respect to the axis 5, smaller than a width A of the flange 9, and defines a connecting annular portion 16 of the filter 11 to the flange 9.
The connection, between the flange 15 and the flange 9 is preferably made by means of glue or any other fastening means, which ensures stable adhesion between the two flanges .
In the shown example, the flange 15 extends completely on the flange 9 and, therefore, in this case, the connecting annular portion 16 has a width W, measured radially with respect to the axis 5, identical to the width T of the flange 15. According to variants not shown, the flange 15 extends on the flange 9 only at its own outer peripheral annular portion; in this case, the width W of the connecting annular portion 16 is smaller than the width T of the flange 15. Preferably, the width W of the connecting annular portion 16 is equal to or smaller than 50% of the width A of the flange 9. As shown in Figure 3, since the width W of the connecting annular portion 16 is smaller than the width A of the flange 9, the cover 4 is in direct contact with the flange 9 along an outer peripheral annular portion of the flange 9, without interposition of the flange 15, The cover 4 is welded, or stably fastened in any other way, directly to the flange 9, thus creating an extremely stable connection between the cover 4 and the cup-shaped body 3 and guaranteeing a perfect sealing of the filter 11.
The cover 4 can be connected to the flange 9 only at the direct contact area between the cove 4 and the flange 9; according to a different embodiment, the connection area between the cover 4 and the flange 9 can extend to the whole width of the flange 9, thus comprising an outer annular zone, where the cover 4 and the flange 9 are directly connected, and the connecting annular portion 16, along which the flange 15 of the filter 11 is interposed between the cover 4 and the flange 9,
