Description

SAFETY SYSTEM FOR VEHICLES DESCRIPTION
The present invention deals with a safety system for vehicles, especially for their circulation.
Currently, an increasing number of vehicles are equipped or might be equipped with so-called infotainment systems, i.e. with audio and/or audio-visual entertainment or satellite navigation systems, which might be integrated into the vehicle itself, for instance on the dashboard, or implemented in mobile devices (smartphones, tablets) configured in such a manner as to be connected to the vehicle.
These infotainment systems generally include a screen through which one can access DVD's, video files, TV programs, satellite navigation systems or even videogames.
These infotainment systems, however, introduce some risks for the safety of vehicle circulation. Although, in fact, the use of the same for entertainment purposes is usually automatically deactivated when the vehicle is operated, in such a manner as to prevent the driver from making use of those services, the use thereof for other than entertainment purposes, e.g. in order to manage calls from telephones linked to the infotainment system or to manage the satellite navigation device, might entail unwanted distractions potentially dangerous to the driver. The same holds true when the driver initiates a call or activates the satellite navigation device directly from his mobile device whilst he is driving the vehicle.
In the event of use for entertainment purposes, it might sometimes be possible to envisage, as an optional, the deactivation of the infotainment systems, thereby enabling the driver to watch a movie or a TV program, especially with regard to autonomous or semi- autonomous vehicles currently in the trial phase.
The primary task of the present invention consists in realizing a safety system for vehicles that makes it possible to overcome such drawback and ensure greater security in vehicle circulation.
Within the scope of this task, one of the purposes of the present invention is to realize a safety system capable of operating both with infotainment systems on board the vehicle and with mobile devices configured in such a manner as to be connected to the vehicle itself.
Another purpose of the invention consists in the realization of a safety system capable of being automatically activated when the vehicle starts.
Yet another purpose of the invention consists in the realization of a safety system that might be adopted in autonomous or semi- autonomous vehicles the development of which is currently underway. A further purpose of the invention consists in the realization of a safety system for vehicles that is capable of providing the most far- reaching guarantees of reliability and safe use.
An additional purpose of the invention consists in the realization of a safety system for vehicles that is easy to realize and install on a vehicle and is economically competitive when compared to the familiar technique.
The abovementioned task, as well as the purposes alluded to and others that will become clearer hereunder, are reached by a safety system for vehicles, inclusive of image acquisition means and display means, characterized by the fact that it comprises means for vehicle movement detection suited to the task of activating the said image acquisition means, so as to acquire a sequence of images representing what is located in front of the said vehicle, as well as activating the display of the aforesaid sequence of images on the display means situated on board the vehicle.
Additional characteristics and advantages will emerge more clearly from the description of the preferred, albeit not exclusive, implementation form of a safety system for vehicles pursuant to the invention, as set out for illustrating and non-exhaustive purposes through the help of the attached drawings, where: picture 1 is an overview of the implementation form of a safety system for vehicles as per the invention; picture 2 synthetically illustrates the safety system for vehicles as per the invention, on board the vehicle; picture 3 synthetically illustrates a first example of display means belonging to the safety system for vehicles as per the invention; picture 4 synthetically illustrates a second example of display means belonging to the safety system for vehicles as per the invention.
With regard to the abovementioned pictures, the safety system for vehicles, altogether referred to by reference number 1, includes means for vehicle (5) movement (3) detection (5).
According to the invention, means for movement detection (3) are configured in such a manner as to activate image acquisition means (7) suited to the task of acquiring a sequence of images (9) representing what is located in front of the vehicle (5), as well as activating the display of the aforesaid sequence of images (9) on the display means (1 1) situated on board the vehicle (5).
The safety system (1) might comprise a short-range wireless transmission medium (17) configured in such a manner as to convey the sequence of images (9) to the display means (1 1) located on board the vehicle (5). The display means (11) located on board the vehicle (5) might include an infotainment system (13) associated with the vehicle itself.
Such an infotainment system (13) might include, for instance, both audio/visual entertainment systems and satellite navigation systems.
The display means (1 1) might even include a mobile device (15), such as a cellular phone, a smartphone or a tablet, configured in such a manner as to be connected to the safety system (l),for example through a wireless transmission medium (17).
Such a wireless transmission medium (17) is, conveniently, a Bluetooth medium.
Conveniently, the safety system for vehicles (1) is likewise suited for use in vehicles devoid of front camera infotainment systems and position detection means. In particular, in the event that the display means (1 1) include a mobile device (15), the movement detection means (3) might include the GPS sensor provided in the mobile device (15) itself, whereas the image acquisition means (7) might include the video camera provided in the mobile device (15) itself.
The mobile device (15) conveniently includes an application tasked with managing the safety system (1).
The mobile device (15) might conveniently cooperate with the infotainment system (13) associated with the vehicle (5), in situations where, for instance, the sequence of images (9) might be shown on the screen of the mobile device (15) or on the screen of the infotainment system (13), suitably interconnected via Bluetooth or via USB cable or through any other connection modality, without precluding the possibility of using the mobile device (15) in its other functions.
The safety system for vehicles (1) conveniently includes an electronic control unit (19) connected to at least one between movement detection means (3), image acquisition means (7) and display means (11).
Conveniently, the electronic control unit (19) is connected to the movement detection means (3), to the image acquisition means (7), and to the display means ( 1 ), and include the wireless transmission medium ( 17).
The display means (1 1) conveniently include a screen (21), where the sequence of images (9) might be reproduced in a box (23) of the screen (21), as set out for purely illustrating purposes in picture 3. Such a box (23) might occupy a corner of the screen (21) or a full side, upper or lower portion of the screen (21).
The sequence of images (9) might even be reproduced as background (25) of the screen (21 ), as set out for purely illustrating purposes in picture 4.
Accordingly, as regards both a driver who is using an infotainment system (13) or one who is using a mobile device (15), on the screen (21) of the infotainment system (13) or the mobile device (15), the sequence of images (9) acquired by the image acquisition means (7) located in front of the vehicle (5) is reproduced in a box (23) found on the screen (21), or on the background (25) of the screen (21) itself.
The display of the sequence of images (9) representing what is taking place in front of the vehicle (5) does not prevent the use of the infotainment system (13) or the mobile device (15) with regard to those functions that are allowed whilst driving the vehicle (5).
For example, the display means (11) might in fact be used as satellite navigation device and accordingly show the driver, besides the route to follow, also what is taking place in front of the vehicle (5). That way, when the driver temporarily shifts his sight from the road to the screen (21) of the display means (1 1), he might keep on watching what is happening in front of the vehicle (5), in a box (23) or on the background (25) of the screen (21).
The movement detection means (3) conveniently include a GPS medium (27) capable of detecting whether the vehicle (5) is switching direction.
The vehicle movement detection (5) might also be carried out through different movement detection means (3) than the GPS medium (27), starting for instance with a gear change detection, or the detection of a maximum speed limit from a speedometer. The movement detection means (3) are conveniently configured, apart from launching the acquisition and display of the sequence of images (9) when the vehicle (5) is moving, also in order to interrupt the acquisition and display of that sequence of images (9) whilst the vehicle (5) is stationary.
The image acquisition means (7) might include a video camera (29). The sequence of images (9) might accordingly be a video acquired by such video camera (29) and displayed on the screen (21) of the display means (11).
The safety system for vehicles (1) is conveniently suited for use in autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles (5) fit with automatic drive. In the autonomous vehicles (5), it is envisaged that the driver's activity is going to be rather limited, and that the driver is rather going to be a passenger in the automatically driven vehicle (5).
In this case, the driver/passenger might resort to the display means (1 1) for entertainment purposes, by for instance watching a movie or TV program or by taking part in a videoconference while the vehicle (5) is moving autonomously. In this scenario, the sequence of images (9) of what is happening in front of the vehicle (5), reproduced on the screen (21) of the display means (1 1) is capable of enabling a human monitoring of the vehicle's autonomous movement (5), thereby allowing the driver/passenger to promptly intervene in the face of sudden situations of danger or emergency. The operation, of the safety system for vehicles is patently clear from what is set out above.
In particular, such a system is activated upon detection of the movement of the vehicle on which that system is installed, and takes care of reproducing on the screen of possible display devices or systems located on board the vehicle itself the sequence of images concerning what is taking place in front of the vehicle. That way, the driver who shifts his sight, if only temporarily, from the screen of those devices and/or display systems, will keep on watching what is happening in front of the moving vehicle.
An example of the operation of the safety system for vehicles might be the following: The driver starts the vehicle (5); the GPS medium (27) detects the movement of the vehicle (5) and signals that movement to the electronic control unit (19). The electronic control unit (19) activates the video camera (29), which acquires the sequence of images (9) and conveys it, through the electronic control unit (19), to the screen (21) of one or more of the display means (1 1) located on board the vehicle (5).
In the event of mobile devices (15) located on board the vehicle (5), the sequence of images (9) might be transmitted from the electronic control unit (19) to the mobile devices themselves via a wireless transmission medium (17). The arrest of the vehicle (5) brings about the deactivation of the safety system (1) operation.
Another example of the operation of the safety system for vehicles (1) might be the one relating to autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles (5). In this scenario, the driver/passenger making use of the display means (11) for purposes other than driving the vehicle, such as entertainment purposes, is nevertheless shown, on the background (25) or in a box (23) of the relevant screen (21), the sequence of images (9) of what is happening in front of the vehicle (5) itself, thereby enabling the driver/passenger to intervene if need be in the driving of the vehicle (5).
It has essentially been noted that the safety system for vehicles, pursuant to the present invention, fulfils the task as well as the scheduled purposes, inasmuch as it makes it possible to meet the needs for security in vehicle circulation.
A further advantage of the safety system, as per the invention, consists in the fact that it might be utilized more easily and flexibly on various types of display devices or systems located on board the vehicle, such as infotainment systems or mobile devices.
Yet another advantage of the safety system, as per the invention, consists in the fact that it is automatically activated and interrupted, respectively, whilst the vehicle is moving and when it is stationary. The safety system for vehicles, thus conceived, is susceptible of several modifications and variants, all of which fall within the scope of the inventive concept.
Moreover, all the details may be replaced by other, technically equivalent elements.
Essentially, the materials employed, provided their compatibility with the specific use, as well as the contingent sizes and forms, might be anything depending on requirements.
