Abstract

The present invention relates to a drum (1) comprising a sheet metal (2), a cylindrical body (3) that is formed by bending the sheet metal (2) into a cylinder, a linear seam (4) that is produced by overlapping the opposite peripheries of the sheet metal (2) on the body (3), and a step (5) that is formed by expanding the body (3), wherein at least one strengthening element (6) that is disposed on the step (5) so that at least some portion thereof is aligned with the seam (4) and that extends towards the center of the body (3) or in the reverse direction.

Description

A DRUM WITH IMPROVED MECHANICAL STRENGTH AND THE PRODUCTION METHOD THEREOF
The present invention relates to a drum that is suitable for using in laundry washing or washing-drying machines, and the production method thereof.
In laundry washing or washing-drying machines, laundry is loaded into a drum, the drum is rotated by means of an electric motor and washing, spin-drying and drying processes are realized. In the state of the art, for the production of the drum, a rectangular sheet metal is bent into a cylinder and the peripheries that face one another are joined forming a seam and thus, the hollow cylindrical body of the drum is formed. After the seam is formed, the diameter of the body is increased by crushing and expanding the sheet metal. After the expansion process, the seam is crushed and two sides of the sheet metal are permanently joined. However, after long term use, abrasions occur on the seam or in the vicinity of the seam due to the loads acting on the sheet metal, thus on the body.
In the state of the art European Patent No. EP1520067, a washing machine drum is explained which comprises a cylindrical body shell and circular front and rear lids, the peripheries of which are connected to the cylindrical shell by means of a seam, and wherein the strength of the said seam is increased against centrifugal forces by being circumferentially stamped.
The aim of the present invention is the realization of a drum, the mechanical strength of which is improved.
The drum realized in order to attaint the aim of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof comprises a seam that is produced by bending a sheet metal cylindrically and overlapping two opposite peripheries thereof, a cylindrical body that is formed by the cylindrically-shaped sheet metal, and a curved step that remains between the portion of the body that is produced by crushing and expanding the body and the mouth portion the diameter of which does not change. The drum furthermore comprises a strengthening element that is disposed on the step so as to overlap with the seam.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the strengthening element on the step is shaped as an impression that is formed by inwardly denting the cylindrical outer surface of the drum body by circumferentially applying pressure from outside by means of a pressure apparatus.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the strengthening element on the step is shaped as an embossment that is formed by outwardly protruding the cylindrical inner surface of the drum body by circumferentially applying pressure from inside by means of a pressure apparatus.
In an embodiment of the present invention, more than one strengthening element is arranged on the step at intervals. Thus, the step and hence the drum are strengthened along the periphery of the body.
During the production of the drum, a rectangular sheet metal is bent into a cylinder and the peripheries that face one another are joined forming a seam and thus, the hollow cylindrical body of the drum is formed. After the seam is formed, the diameter of the body is increased by crushing and expanding the sheet metal. After the expansion process, the seam is crushed and two edges of the sheet metal are permanently joined while the strengthening element is formed by circumferentially applying pressure onto the body from outside or inside by means of a pressure apparatus, for example a steel roller or disc.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the drum is used in laundry washing machines.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the drum is used in laundry washing-drying machines.
The drum realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where:

The drum (1) comprises a sheet metal (2), a cylindrical body (3) that is formed by bending the sheet metal (2) into a cylinder, a seam (4) that is produced by overlapping the opposite peripheries of the sheet metal (2) on the body (3), and a step (5) that is formed by expanding the body (3) so that the diameters of the open mouths thereof remain the same. After the seam (4) is formed by bending the sheet metal (2) and joining the opposite peripheries thereof, the diameter of the body (3) is increased with the crushing process. Thus, the step (5) is formed between the middle portion of the body (3) with a relatively larger diameter and the mouth portion thereof, the diameter of which is not changed.
The drum (1) of the present invention comprises a strengthening element (6) that is disposed on the step (5) so that at least some portion thereof is aligned with the seam (4) and that extends towards the center of the body (3) or in the reverse direction. By means of the strengthening element (6), the resistance to stretching and tearing of the sheet metal (2), the thickness of which decreases especially around the seam (4) while the diameter of the body (3) is expanded, is improved. The strengthening element (6) increases the surface area over the step (5), thus decreases the stress acting on the step (5).
In an embodiment of the present invention, the strengthening element (6) is shaped as an impression which is formed by denting a strip ring-shaped narrow portion of the step (5) towards the inner area of the body (3) by circumferentially applying pressure from outside by means of a pressure apparatus, for example a steel roller or disc. The impression-shaped strengthening element (6) extends towards the inner region of the drum (1). The pressure apparatus crushes and smoothes the seam (4) apart from its function of forming the strengthening element (6). By a simple modification performed on the apparatus that is used to smooth the seam (4), the apparatus gains the feature of forming the strengthening element (6), thus decreasing production costs. Moreover, an additional production step is not required to form the strengthening element (6), since in the production step, wherein the seam (4) is smoothed, the strengthening element (6) is simultaneously formed.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the strengthening element (6) is shaped as an embossment that is formed by protruding the step (5) towards the outside of the body (3) by circumferentially applying pressure from inside by means of a pressure apparatus.
In an embodiment of the present invention, more than one strengthening element (6) is consecutively arranged along the circular line on the step (5). Thus, the force on the step (5) acts on a wider surface at more than one point by means of the strengthening element (6). Moreover, since the step (5) is crushed while the strengthening element (6) is formed, the dislocation density of the step (5) is increased at more than one point. Thus, a stronger structure is obtained.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the strengthening element (6) is elliptical. Thus, the centrifugal force applied on the step (5) acts on a wider surface by means of the strengthening element (6), thereby decreasing deformation.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the production method of the drum (1) consists of the following steps:
- bending the sheet metal (2) to form the cylindrical body (3),
- forming the seam (4),
- forming the step (5) by expanding the body (3),
- smoothing the seam (4) by means of the pressure apparatus and forming the strengthening element (6) simultaneously.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the drum (1) is used in laundry washing machines.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the drum (1) is used in laundry washing-drying machines.
By means of the present invention, the strength of the body (3) is improved by increasing the dislocation density thereof thanks to the strengthening element (6) formed on the step (5). Thus, stretching and tearing are prevented from occurring on the step (5) due to the centrifugal force acting on the body (3) during the rotation of the drum (1). The laundry washer or dryer wherein the drum (1) is used is enabled to operate in a safer manner at the program steps that require high rotational speed.

Claims (8)

  1. A drum (1) comprising a sheet metal (2), a cylindrical body (3) that is formed by bending the sheet metal (2) into a cylinder, a seam (4) that is produced by overlapping the opposite peripheries of the sheet metal (2) on the body (3), and a step (5) that is formed by expanding the body (3) so that the diameters of the open mouths thereof remain the same, characterized by at least one strengthening element (6) that is disposed on the step (5) so that at least some portion thereof is aligned with the seam (4) and that extends towards the center of the body (3) or in the reverse direction.
  2. A drum (1) as in Claim 1, characterized by the strengthening element (6) that is shaped as an impression which is formed by denting the step (5) towards the inner area of the body (3) by circumferentially applying pressure from outside by means of a pressure apparatus.
  3. A drum (1) as in Claim 1, characterized by the strengthening element (6) that is shaped as an embossment which is formed by protruding the step (5) towards the outside of the body (3) by circumferentially applying pressure from inside by means of a pressure apparatus.
  4. A drum (1) as in any one of the above claims, characterized by more than one strengthening element (6) consecutively disposed along the circular line on the step (5).
  5. A drum (1) as in any one of the above claims, characterized by the elliptical strengthening element (6).
  6. A laundry washing machine characterized by a drum (1) as in Claim 1 or 2.
  7. A laundry washing-drying machine characterized by a drum (1) as in Claim 1 or 2.
  8. A production method for a drum (1) as in Claim 1, comprising the steps of:
    - bending the sheet metal (2) to form the cylindrical body (3),
    - forming the seam (4),
    - forming the step (5) by expanding the body (3),
    - smoothing the seam (4) by means of the pressure apparatus and forming the strengthening element (6) simultaneously.
