Abstract

An electric power steering system for farm and utility tractors segment incorporates a unique and innovative electric power steering module (13) between steering gear box (4A) and steering shaft (2) of the manual steering system, thus, making it a safe and much more reliable power steering system for tractors since it also has mechanical linkages present between various components. The electric power steering module (13) provides steering assist to the driver and is connected to steering shaft (2) via coupler inside upper bracket (12) and to steering gear box (4A) via coupler inside lower bracket (14). The electric power steering module (13) has a torsion bar (13d), an integrated torque sensor and integrated electronic control unit assembly (13s) on a printed circuit board for cost effective design, a motor (13r) and a robust reduction gear train comprising motor pinion (13o), intermediate gear (13m), intermediate pinion (131), and output Gear (13c) mechanism.

Statement under Article 19(1)

With regard to documents cited in the International Search Report and written opinion of the International Searching Authority, we submit the following clarificatory remarks in respect of the present invention:

The present invention relates to an electric power steering system for farm and utility tractors having an integrated steering electronic control unit (ECU) and torque sensor.

The subject matter of the present invention aims at providing a compact, less complex, safe and cost effective steering system to be used by farm and utility tractors without loss of mechanical linkages and using state of the art EPS technology specially developed for tractors. In doing so, the present invention addresses various problems associated with the manual and hydrostatic steering systems as used in state-of-the art. The present invention is specially designed for OFF road vehicles integrated with recirculating ball type steering gear box.

US 4657103 (Dl) serves an objective that is altogether different in scope and nature from the present invention i.e., "controlling the steering operation of the vehicle with respect to the rapid changes taking place in the steering speed of a steering wheel, or aligning the operation of the electric motor to be in line with the steering operation (subjected to sudden and random changes)", as is apparent from the description of the patent.

Therefore, Dl cannot be considered to be relevant for the purpose intended to be served by the present invention as it does not address the problems stated in the background of the present invention and thus, goes ahead by serving a different purpose.

In addition to above, Dl fails to disclose a feature "an integrated torque sensor and steering electronic control unit assembly on a printed circuit board, wherein said

12 torque sensor is in-built in said electronic control unit", as is claimed in claim 1 of the present patent application and sufficiently supported by the complete specification.

US 7992672 (D2) also fails to address the problems associated with the prior arts as described in the background section of the present patent application and hence, serves a different objective.

D2 relates to an electric power steering system that aims to prevent overloading of a steering gearing box or a steering actuator of the electric power steering system. The said objective is achieved by preventing the assist current from excessively increasing and thus, detrimentally affecting the durability of a steering gear box and/or the motor of a steering actuator.

Moreover, D2 also fails to disclose the feature "an integrated torque sensor and steering electronic control unit assembly on a printed circuit board, wherein said torque sensor is in-built in said electronic control unit", as is claimed in claim 1 of the present patent application.

In addition to above comments, both the documents Dl & D2, unlike the present invention, relates to an automotive application of rack and pinion type.
