Description

Touch sensitive control unit and a method for production thereof
The present invention refers to a touch sensitive control unit, preferably with the household apparatus and similar, being optionally arranged at the back side of the transparent front plate of said apparatus, said control unit comprises light segments to display different information and touch sensitive keys to enter information into the apparatus. The invention refers also to a method for production said control unit.
Known are solutions of display units formed of displays with a frame of polymer materials placed on a printed circuit board and with capacitive keys installed. A capacitive electrode is made either of a conductive material such as a copper or a steel spring of different forms, for instance, or of special film glued to the display unit and comprising conductive layers in places where said capacitive electrode is arranged. The illumination of light segments or capacitive keys is provided at the side by means of side light emission diodes (LED) or by means of LED which illuminate from below the surface of the segments or keys. In addition to the development of the printed circuit boards, the solutions as mentioned above usually require additional development of new elements and the corresponding tools. Said new elements being necessary to form such a display unit are usually represented by frame of polymer material, a copper or steel spring for capacitive electrodes, light conductors to conduct light from the source to the surface to be illuminated, a film with metallized parts for capacitive electrodes of the keys and links thereof, and similar.
It is the object of the present invention to create a new method of producing touch sensitive control unit, which simplifies the structure and production of said display unit reducing simultaneously the number of the component parts and corresponding tools for production of said component parts.
According to the present invention, the object as set above is solved with characteristics disclosed in claim 1. Details of the invention are disclosed in the corresponding subclaims. The invention is further described in detail by way of non-limiting embodiments, and with a reference to the accompanying drawings, where
Fig. 1 shows a three-dimensional exploded view of the first embodiment of a touch sensitive control unit according to the invention,
Fig. 2 shows an enlarged partial cross-sectional view in a plane II of the touch sensitive control unit of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 shows an enlarged detail III of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 shows an enlarged partial cross-sectional view in a plane IV of the touch sensitive control unit of Fig. 1,
Fig. 5 shows an enlarged detail V of Fig. 4,
Fig. 6 shows a three-dimensional exploded view of the second embodiment of a touch sensitive control unit according to the invention.
A touch sensitive control unit according to the invention is preferably used with a household apparatus such as an oven, cooling apparatus, washing machine and similar. It is provided for, according to the present invention and according to the embodiment as shown in Fig. 1, that a display unit 2 is pressed against a transparent front plate 1 which is arranged at the outer side of a household apparatus and, respectively, at the side facing a user. Said transparent front plate 1 for example is made of glass, plastic or similar. At the location of the cooperation of the front plate 1 and the display unit 2 said front plate 1 is formed with a relatively thin and opaque layer 3 such as with a layer of plastic, colour and similar being adhesively bonded with the front plate 1. Said opaque layer 3 is formed with at least one cut-out, preferably with a plurality of cut-outs 4, representing a sign such as a graphical symbol, pictogram, character, inscription or similar, for instance, which, during operation signalize to the user which activity has been chosen and, respectively, which activity is currently operative. Said display unit 2 is comprised of relatively thin carrier board 5 and of a relatively thin display board 6 arranged thereon and, respectively, connected thereto, where said display board 6 being pressed against said layer 3 of the front plate 1.
A plurality of electronic elements of a control circuit known per se and not shown is attached to said carrier board 5 at the side averted from the front plate 1. Said carrier board 5 is formed at the side cooperating with the display board 6 with at least one flat conductive section, preferably with a plurality of flat conductive sections 7, each section 7 being essentially vertically aligned with each said cut-out 4 in the opaque layer 3. Furthermore, each section 7 is formed as a touch sensitive key, in the shown embodiment as a capacitive key of electrically conductive material such as copper for example. Each section 7 the dimensions thereof correspond, when viewed in plane, to the dimensions of the above mentioned sign such as a graphical symbol, pictogram, character, inscription or similar, comprises in the area of one of the sides thereof a cavity 8 within which is arranged a light source 9 such as LED, optical fibre or similar. The remaining area of said section 7 is formed everywhere except in the entire marginal area 10 thereof with a plurality of cavities 11. When the control unit is assembled, said board 6 is arranged between said board 5 and the front plate 1 and is formed with at least one cut-out, preferably with a plurality of cut-outs 12. In essence, each cut-out 12 is vertically aligned with both each above mentioned cutout 4 in the opaque layer 3 and each section 7 on the board 5. Moreover, it is provided for according to the present invention that each cut-out 12 is surrounded over the entire circumferential surface thereof with a coating 13 of conductive material, wherein said coating 13 runs out of said cut-out 12 and extends in a manner of a flange 14 and 15, respectively, over both surfaces of said board 6. It is provided for according to the present invention that the longitudinal extension of said flange 14, 15 equals approximately the thickness of said board 6.
Furthermore, it is provided for according to the present invention that the printed boards 5, 6 are mutually bonded by means of a positive material joint. Thus, one of possible embodiments provides for that the entire marginal area 10 of each section 7 on board 5 is bonded by means of soldering technique with each said flange 15 facing the board 5. In this manner a voltaic connection of the capacitive key from the carrier board 5 to the display board 6 is obtained, and simultaneously a sealing of said cut-out 12 is also obtained in order for filler means 16 does not run out of said cut-out 12 during filling and drying. Furthermore, it is provided for according to the present invention that the light from the light source 9 when activated is directed by means of a light directing means. In the first embodiment is provided that said light directing means is selected as a translucent filler means 16. Thus, for example, with the control unit assembled each cut-out 12 is filled with the translucent filler means 16 of a liquid material, kneadable material or similar, that can be hardened by means of an ultraviolet light, heat or similar. Said filler means 16 completely fills each cut-out 12 in the board 6 as well as said cavity 8 and a plurality of cavities 11 in each section 7 on the board 5. Said filler means 16 is intended to transfer the light approximately in the plane of the cut-out 12 as good as possible whereas the plurality of cavities 11 disperse the light and uniformly illuminates the cut-out 4 and, respectively, the sign defined with said cut-out. The light of the light source 9 reflects from the coating 13 on the wall of said cut-out 12, thus, preventing for the light to escape the cut-out 12 being filled with the filler means 16 and to escape as a parasitic light into the neighbouring segments. It is provided for according to the present invention that the surface of the carrier board 5 facing the display board 6 is provided with a thin light reflecting protective layer 5a, preferably with a white protection layer covering the entire surface of the board 5 with the exception of each marginal area 10 of said conductive sections 7 and the light sources.
A particularly simple connection of both boards 5, 6 is achieved in a manner as described above. Said cut-outs 12 filled with a filler means 16 efficiently prevent the illumination of the neighbouring segment for displaying different information. Simultaneously, said protective layer 5a together with surface irregularities of the conductive sections reflect the light in a manner of both a reflector and a refractor only into said field defined by the size of the capacitive key, for instance.
The second embodiment of the control unit according to the present invention provides for said light directing means to be selected as a display frame 17 arranged between said carrier board 5 and said display board 6. Said display frame 17 is formed with at least one cut-out, preferably with a plurality of cut-outs 18, each cut-out 18 being in essence vertically aligned with each cut-out 4 in the opaque layer 3 of the front plate 1, with each cut-out 12 in the display board 6, and with each section 7 on the board 5.
In case the control unit according to the invention comprises, in addition to a touch sensitive key for entering information into the apparatus, also at least one segment for displaying different information such as time and similar, said opaque layer 3 is provided in the area of the cut-out 4 and the sign defined with said cut-out, respectively, and at the side averted from said front plate 1 with a light directing means 19. Said light directing means 19 is selected in the present embodiment as a light layer, preferably as a white translucent layer. Said means 19 is intended to dissipate the light coming from the light source 9 arranged in the cut-out 12 of the board 6. In this case, the coating 13 of each cutout is intended exclusively to prevent the parasitic illumination of the neighbouring segments. In addition, with such an embodiment of the segment for displaying information the positive material joint between the boards 5 and 6 becomes superfluous.
Different embodiments of the control unit according to the invention are possible without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. So for instance, it is possible that the surface of the display board 6 being averted from the carrier board 5 is provided with an additional relatively thin layer incorporating signs such as a graphical symbol, pictogram, character, inscription or similar, which, during operation signalize to the user which activity has been chosen and, respectively, which activity is currently operative. In this manner the control unit according to the invention can be utilised also in the absence of the front plate on a household apparatus, for example.
Not taking into account the respective electronic components at the bottom side of the carrier board 5, 17 the thickness of the control unit is substantially lowered, typically below 2 mm. In this manner a substantial part of the space is obtained within the household apparatus that can be used for other purposes, such as to improve heat insulation of the apparatus at the place of the installation of the control unit.
