Abstract

L'invention concerne une électrode à grande étendue de surface destinée à être utilisée dans une pile à combustible microbienne. Dans un mode de réalisation, la pile à combustible microbienne comprend un support d'électrode et des prolongements dotés d'aspérités fixés au support. Dans un mode de réalisation, les prolongements dotés d'aspérités et / ou le support d'électrode sont constitués d'un matériau électriquement conducteur comme par exemple du graphite ou des fibres de graphite. Dans un mode de réalisation, l'électrode est une anode et le support d'électrode se présente sous la forme d'un treillis ou d'une structure tissée. Les électrodes offrent une élimination inégalée de la demande chimique en oxygène (DCO) et sont ainsi utiles dans l'assainissement des eaux usées. L'invention concerne également des piles à combustible microbiennes qui emploient les électrodes de l'invention. Dans un mode de réalisation, les piles à combustible microbiennes emploient une barrière arrêtant l'oxygène et n'emploient pas de membrane à échange de cations, d'anions ou de protons.
